Did I kill my nuvi 755T?

Somehow with all the tinkering with map update 2023.20 on my old nuvi 755T I can no longer get it to power up on battery or through the USB port. It does power up through the powered cradle and seems to work properly. But as soon as I unplug it from the cradle, it goes dark and will not power back up except through the cradle. I tried leaving it plugged into the charger over night, but it didn't help.

It was still working when I finished the map update and has the 2023.20 All US map and large JCV file installed. I am thinking it may just be a completely failed battery, so I need to decide if it is worth $14 for a replacement battery (from Amazon). The smart thing would be to just say "good bye" to my old reliable friend. But my curiosity will probably win and cause me to take a chance on a new battery. If that doesn't fix it, I guess my old 755T is frozen in time on 2023.20 as it will not be possible to access it in mass storage mode to update it.

I would

try the new battery. Good Luck!

Call Garmin, be nice and

Call Garmin, be nice and explain to them that after the update your unit will not power up any more. I had 2 units that did the same thing and they replaced them.

Have you tried to hold the power tab down without letting up until it re-boots?

Battery

It does sound like a failed battery but it should power up via the USB port. Have you tried using a Garmin AC adapter & USB cable?

The battery died in my old Nuvi 760 years ago but I still use it occasionally. It will power up in the DC cradle and also when plugged into a computer USB port with a Garmin compatible USB cable. Since it works for how I use it, I see no need to replace the battery at this point.

As I'm sure you know, not all generic USB cables will work with Garmin devices.

Anyway, if it were me, I'd try replacing the battery. If nothing else, just for the challenge and possible satisfaction if it fixes the problem. I hate to see any of these trusty old devices die.

Re-boot.

Thanks for the tip Charlie. Yup, I already tried that multiple time ... no luck.

I have tried several USB cables and chargers, including Garmin branded ones. It is completely dead through the USB port. In fact, the device was plugged in via USB and operating normally when it died all of a sudden ... it just went black instantly. It does power up through the cradle and Garmin traffic adapter/power cable that originally came with it. On these old 7xx devices, the powered cradle has a flat multi-pin connector, and doesn't use a USB type connector.

It is possible the USB or charging circuitry just went bad suddenly in which case a battery won't fix it. But I think I will take your advice along with the same advice given by jgermann and craigw above, and order a new battery ... otherwise I will always wonder

Just think of all the fun you'll have tinkering with the old unit grin

For sure!

The challenge will come when one of our nuvi 3597s, DriveLuxe 51s or other GPS that needs to be heated to soften the adhesive, then pryed apart with a spudger to replace their batteries.

Good video for 3597

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeF95hjCDck

I see a 3597LM, GPS only on eBay at $36 with shipping. I’m tempted to get it for a backup.

Fortunately I can cheat !

Last season my micro USB in port on my e-reader broke. While I was still in Mexico I took it to a very good and reliable man. He installed a new one for just over $ 10.00.

If one of my Garmins were to die, Id buy a battery and let him install it or even let him order a battery and install it.

That's a great price, especially if it includes the mag mount. That alone is worth $36.

Success!

Well, the new battery arrived today ... took just a few minutes to install. The old nuvi 755 powered right up with 4 full bars and also now powers up through the USB port and goes into mass storage mode. So the good advice given by all my POI Factory friends paid off!

Now, when I get time, I will play around with the Canada and Mexico map to see if I can get it to be recognized using the method described by baumback in this post: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/52369?page=1#comment-542060.

It was GPS only, no mount

GPS only on the $36, but there is a unit for $50 shipping included that seems to include the mount. Also, you can make an offer. See https://www.ebay.com/itm/394167143951?hash=item5bc6314e0f:g:...

If . . .

If a battery replacement is all that's likely needed to get my 755t operational again, the only thing still holding me back is the disintegrating rubber covering. Has anyone tried removing the gooey rubber outer shell?

Nope!

Mine is gooey too! I tried cleaning it but it didn't help. My daughter was using the 755T up until about a year ago, but my only real use for it now is for testing/discussion on this forum. So, the sticky surface is annoying, but it doesn't prevent using it for this purpose. Like I said before, the smart thing is to retire it, but I have spent $14 for dumber things. I enjoy having ways to test things when some issue comes up in the forum discussions, like has happened with this last map update.

Only Time To Lose If . . .

. . . I decide to put on some disposable gloves and tackle the schmoo myself. Once the bulk of it's off, I expect some mineral spirits will suffice to clean the surface down to whatever is underneath.

Back when it first started to deteriorate, I would've let the Sharcnet guy replace it with a different cover which seemed to be an all metal option, but despite daily checks for many straight weeks, never could catch an opportunity when he was accepting new repair jobs.

I have noticed that many rubber components seem to get sticky over time. Putting these items in a sealed anti static bag appears to accelerate the rubber becoming sticky. I had a bunch of USB sticks sealed in an anti static bag that became sticky, the ones from the same batch that were left in the open did not become sticky.

Never tried it but a magic eraser...

I've never tried it but supposedly a very slightly damp magic eraser will remove the sticky residue. Magic erasers have a very fine abrasive material in them so don't get it near the screen.

Looks like John From PA was correct about the magic eraser.

Nuvi 755 battery.

Before throwing the removed 755T Li-Pol battery into my battery recycle box, I decided to get out my multimeter tester and check it. There are 3 wires coming out of the battery, black, yellow and red. I assume the black and red are the - and + terminals and the yellow is probably for the charging management circuit. I was getting a reading of 0 Volts between the black and red wires, but a reading of 3.88 V between the yellow and red (it is a 3.7 V battery). On closer examination, I found that the black wire was completely broken off from where it was soldered to the little circuit board at the top of the battery underneath a cellophane tape shield. I don't remember ever dropping or jarring the 755T, but somehow that black wire broke loose inside the nuvi case.

I know I replaced this battery once before, probably in or around 2012 or 2013. Anyway, this finding makes me confident that the nuvi 755T is still good, and the problem was in the battery itself.

Nice work Alan!

Is the old battery repairable? It may not be worth the effort though since you already have a new one.
