Garmin Vehicle suction cup mount

I like to know how Garmin user feels about the vehicle suction cup mount. Do you think it is up to the mark? Does your suction cup stay while you are driving? I have tried many ways to fix the suction cup but it never stays on the dash and the GPS fall on the ground.

I use one of these

I use one of these https://www.amazon.com/RoadVise-Holder-iPhone-Galaxy-Retail/... , arkon rv179. It has a 17mm ball mount that afits garmins, but also comes with the heavy duty phone holder.

It's lasted several years across a few cars. I had an older version of this, mg279, after about 5 years it lost its stickyness and would come off if it got hot inside the car.

mount

I purchased a cheap STICKY Windshield mount on Amazon and it sticks great on windshield or Dash. and if you peel it off to put else where just run it under warm water and let air dry and its like new again.

The suction cup mounts can and will leave a mark on certain surfaces. How well it stays while driving depends on the surface. If the surface isn't smooth or isn't clean the suction cup won't work as well.

Go with a Garmin friction mount if you don't want to deal with the suction cup mount. Been using a friction mount for years and it stays in place under most driving conditions. Only time I've had it fly off the dash was when violently maneuvering the vehicle to avoid an accident, obstruction, animal, human.

There are a variety of friction mount styles.

Two Garmin mounts, no issues but stuck on glass

Mine are used on the windshield and are rarely if ever a problem. The suction cup for my nuvi 2689, just based on the terminology in the manual, is intended for use on glass or at least a very smooth non-porous surface. The manual makes mention of an optional adhesive mounting disk, to which the suction cup attaches, but the manual also states that the adhesive disk is extremely difficult to remove.

I have had some luck…

…in using isopropyl alcohol to clean both the windshield and the suction cup on Garmin mounts. Be sure that the suction cup is not touching the splotchy area behind the mirror, (if that is on your windshield). Just a slight overlap will cause the suction cup to loosen and fall off. Personally, I prefer the friction mount for the top of the dash. They work well and stay put for the most part.

That area is called the frit band and has a purpose…

Beyond the word frit being useful in scrabble, it has a purpose on your windshield. See https://joeysglassbaytown.com/blog/black-dots-baytown-windsh....

My solution

I removed the rubber and innards from mine, filled the cavity with hot glue to make a flat surface, then glued the mount to the dash. It's permanent, and should I sell the car, the mount stays.

My way has the Garmin where I can easily reach and view it (close to the driver side door) while not obstructing my view out the windshield.

Gave up on suction mounts

Gave up on suction mounts years ago. Tired of it falling off the windshield, usually while driving at 65mph, and trying to catch it as it slid off the dash.

Vent mounts in all vehicles. GPS units stay in car all the time. Never taken off except for a map update or to try and enter an address. No falling off, no crashing to floor, nice and steady and easy to see.

IMHO IF you have lots of spare time and like to clean the suction cup all the time and hope it sticks, keep it, otherwise go to sometime better.

Not Much Luck

With Garmin suction cup mounts. I found this one from RAM which works better but it isn't perfect:

https://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-garmin-g-ball-connector-no...

It can be used as a suction cup or a friction mount.

It's pricey but I like the flexibility since it works in all three of my vehicles.

I also use vent mounts.

I also use vent mounts. Suction cups always fell despite thorough cleaning of the cup and windshield.

I've been using these for years, (GPS, RADAR detector) they stick so good it's tough to remove when them you want to take them off.
