GE 7.13.1.0 has same problem as prior versions....Darn!

For the past few versions, GE will see an SD card with HTML Garmin file from a 660, but during a map update will not warn you that you have to select a quadrant of the country..... THIS USED TO WORK..

Therefore GE, on Map update, proceeds to load a +4GB sized file on the SD card, which of course, the 660 will not 'see'..... But GE says it has completed the Map Update Successfully.... But it Hasn't...

Furthermore Map Updater, though loads smaller file based on your selection of country, does not deal with the smaller screen of 660, and truncates all road names:
Ned Cove Road
Becomes
N.. C... R...

OBVIOUSLY Garmin has forced retirement on this model.... even when Lifetime Maps were purchased....

Is there any place I can download GE from a year or more ago? Which I can then use specifically for the 660?

Otherwise, the last Map that loaded on 660 internally was 2013

PS: I have tried multiple SD cards, on both GE and Map Updater... they all work identically....

Thank You

Perry Archive.

You can find older versions of the Garmin Express Installer on the Perry Archive (https://web.archive.org/web/20200106153456/http://www.gawisp...). Look in the "Garmin Utilities" folder. Whether or not these old installers will actually install and run is an open question, but perhaps you will tell us if you try it.

There is a trick to running an installed older version of Garmin Express (at least on Windows ... don't know about Mac). You have to avoid having GE force the automatic update to the newest version. The only way I have found to do this is to disable all internet access, both ethernet and wi-fi, before you launch Express. GE will post an error saying there is no internet connection. You can clear the error, then reenable your internet connection and GE will continue running without forcing the version update.

Good luck, and let us know if you get it to work.

Thanks Yes, happening on 660

Thanks Yes, happening on 660 also...
Perry shows versions never archived, so that's out...
Guess I'll have to wait for update to trickle out... You'd think there would be some testing done........
GE 7.13.1.0 is still current.... so maybe it's fallen on deaf ears?
Hope they don't do same for 2689LMT

Older GE versions

JanJ, are you only interested in Mac versions of Garmin Express, or can you use Windows versions? If you can use Windows, I may be able to find an older version of the installer.

Windows.
Thank you
At this point we are using out 2689LMT, and keeping the 660 alive is just an exercise so Garmin doesn’t think I’ve abandoned it and stop supporting it!
We bought lifetime map license for 660, and each update means I paid less for it overall!

Past versions left behind

I've written in the past that GE does not clean up after itself; see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/50977. But for old versions of GE perhaps they may exist on any given Windows PC. I say that without having experimented with the content left behind on my Win 10 PC. But at the moment my GE is version 7.13.10 but if I drill down at C:|ProgramData|Garmin|CoreService|Downloads|Application|Application_Application.express-windows.7.13.0.0|omt|express|windows|7.13.0.0
I find a file, "garminexpressinstaller.exe" that is 130 MB. NOTE that the pipe symbol “|”should be replaced with a backslash. The "38f3dd4354690ae994e35dfc8242fccd" in the path may vary from PC to PC. I've never experimented in this manner, but I wonder if I run that executable if it would roll back my GE to 7.13.0.0. I have several such folders, each about 128 to 130 MB.

I have a lot of folders also.

Mine go back to 7.0.1.0
I clicked on the installer and it brought up the program to install that version but it also stated GE was already installed. I suspect that if you uninstalled what you have and then use one of the installers in the location given then GE would install.

Old GE versions I have.

JanJ, I have searched a couple of my Windows 10 PC's and have come up with 2 versions of the Garmin Express Installer. I have version 7.10.0.0 from Nov. 2021. The file size is 127 MB. I also found a really old version 5.5.0.0. I don't know its release date but I think it is from somewhere in 2016/2017. Its file size is only 48 MB.

Interestingly, I installed the old 5.5.0.0 version on an old Windows 10 laptop I have that didn't already have GE installed. It installed and executed without any problem and didn't even force me to do a version upgrade, although I did not attempt to add my Garmin devices or do a map update. I could try that with a clone if you wish. I had forgotten how different the user interface is on these old versions.

If you are interested in either of these versions let me know via PM and we can discuss the best way to get them to you.

EDIT: I wanted to follow up on this to say that I tested my installed Garmin Express 5.5.0.0 with my old nuvi 755T to see if it would actually proceed with the map update. It didn't work. Although the old version recognized my device and even gave an alert that updates were available for the nuvi 755, when I tried to update all it would do is give an error that the Garmin servers were unavailable and to try later. Apparently Garmin has disabled their current servers from using a version of GE this old.

So I updated the PC to the other old version I had access to ... Garmin Express version 7.10.0.0. This version installed without problem, but when I launched it, it gave the message about the required update for GE and it wouldn't let me dismiss that message and go on. So I used the technique described in this earlier post to get around this problem. Using this method, I was successful in using GE version 7.10.0.0 to update both the software and maps on my old nuvi 755.

So again JanJ, if version 7.10.0.0 would help resolve your issue with the nuvi 660, I have the installer file that I can send you.

Some experimentation with what I said earlier

I've written in the past that GE does not clean up after itself; see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/50977. But for old versions of GE perhaps they may exist on any given Windows PC.

As I mentioned if you drill down the path C:|ProgramData|Garmin|CoreService|Downloads|Application|Application_Application.express-windows.7.13.0.0|omt|express|windows|7.13.0.0
you may find several files named "garminexpressinstaller.exe" that are about 127 to 130 MB. NOTE that the pipe symbol “|”should be replaced with a backslash and the "38f3dd4354690ae994e35dfc8242fccd" in the path may vary from PC to PC.

I decided to experiment on an older computer by uninstalling GE (as suggested by "pwohlrab") but before doing so I copied some of the previous garminexpressinstaller.exe versions to another drive. My suspicions were confirmed in that when you uninstall GE through Windows, those files as part of the GE installation are lost.

I then went to the installers I had saved separately, the one labeled as for 7.9.0.0 and ran the file. Sure enough GE was reinstalled and the version was 7.9.0.0. On running it, I was prompted a newer version was available and that version was 7.11.1.1. I was also allowed to NOT update. I let GE do the update. When I then exited and re-entered GE I was prompted that again a newer version was available, it being the current 7.13.10.

So it does appear that those old installers will work, but prior to using them copies must be saved "outside" the GE installation as the uninstall operation removes them.

I don't have a shared cloud drive to use, so if Filezilla will work lets use that. I am not familiar with using Filezilla. PM me the instructions/link for using it. The install file is about 130 MB.

A upload/download of a 130 MB file may not be needed. Check what I said earlier (this thread) in Subject: Some Experimentation With What I Said Earlier. There is a high probability older installation versions of GE exist on a Windows computer. The caveat is they must first be copied to some other folder, then GE is uninstalled in the normal manner, then the appropriate version installation file is executed. If you uninstall GE first, all the installation files are removed since they are part of the GE installation.
