Retrieving Stolen C550?

Sorry to hear that your C550 was stolen. I feel sad for you as I had one stolen also. I'd be in worse shape if my new upgraded unit (C550) got stolen since I love it.

Sorry to say, to my knowledge there isn't much you can do. Did you put in the security code? If so, the unit is useless to whoever gets it unless they know the code. Then, you could start checking your local craigslist.com or ebay for someone trying to sell a used C550 in your area.

I now (since this happened once) take the GPS out of the car at almost all times. Though I hate banana belts, I wear one that keeps my GPS, ipod and HP electronic organizer. By the way, if you get another one, keep the GPS out of site and TAKE THE MOUNT OFF THE WINDOW.

As a small piece of advice, when you buy another (before the GPS enters the car) register the serial number. If (in it's lifetime) the unit gets stolen and breaks, Garmin will see that the unit belongs to you.

I might not of answered your question, but as a person who was in your shoes, I though I'd give some input.

Unfortunately, I had taken the pin number off temporarily because I was gone on vacation so my friend wanted to borrow it for a little bit. But when I got back I was too lazy to put it on. Doh!

It's funny how you mentioned Craigslist. I was just looking at it today. All the C550's say they are new in box, except one. The owner is selling it for $300 too... pretty cheap for a C550. However the location is a good 2 hours away from here so I don't know. I do remember I had a unique scratch on the upper left of the faceplate (Fell hard when the stupid suction went out.)

A friend of mine had his nuvi stolen while sitting at a red light this past weekend. He had the unit mounted near the left side of the steering wheel. Someone just walked up to the window, reached in, snatched the unit, unplugged it, and ran. No word yet on his plans for recovery, if any.

This was in the city, where it's not uncommon for people to be walking around in the street.

Anyways, just a caution for everybody, be smart about where you keep your GPSr at all times.

I'll make sure to save that location in my GPSr and set it to "AVOID AT ALL COSTS".

Maybe I missed it...What city did this happen in? I think my purchase of the Friction mount just became a better buy..I put it in the center of the dash...so now this makes the positioning even more of a key!

300.00 is not that cheap for a C550. I got mine recently new through frys.com for 349.00 with no freight. If you look online, you will find it around this price from various places. Another place to check is dealnews.com . Yes, 300.00 is cheap if you see the adds from Circuit City or Best Buy where they have it for 499.00.

I remember I got mine originally for $450 on sale from Circuit. Took me all summer to save up for that too. That's life tho eh?

One, don't leave the thing unattended.
Two, don't throw away the yellow paper.
Three, don't forget to register.
Four, write down the serial number/yellow paper no.
Five, don't throw away the receipt
Six, use the lock feature, may not get it back but the thief won't be able to use it either.

Zz, I'm just guessing here, but if you threw away the box, and yellow card - the receipt was thrown out too, right? (My receipt had the serial number printed on it). Did you pay by cash or credit card?
