can't connect 2598 to Garmin Express or Win 10

Yesterday my 2598 won't connect to Windows or Garmin Express, hence can't update anything.
Tried rebooting and removing and reloading Garmin Express, no luck.
Tried 2 other PC's and a different cable.

Anyone else ever have that problem?

One issue that is usually overlooked is to make sure the GPS has a good charge on the battery.

good info, will look into

good info, will look into some things, I've already tried most.
Garmin support thinks the unit has simply failed.
Thanks!

replacement

If Garmin recommends replacement that sounds good to me.

Make sure you are using a data charging cable

The 2598 is a nice unit. I do notice you tried a different cable. Be aware that there are two types of USB cables. One type of cable is for charging AND the transfer of data, the other, usually slightly less expensive, is for charging only. If you connect with a charging only cable GE Express won't "see" the device.

So you might want to verify you have the correct type of cable. Unfortunately that is a bit of trial and error although the data/charging cable is often slightly larger in diameter. I see you have a TomTom...maybe try a cable that works with it.

Try both MTP mode and mass storage mode.

We have seen instances where one mode will connect but not the other.

Cables

Most charging cables are thinner than the data cables. Makes it easier to identify which is which.

I would not take Garmins advice until all options are exhausted.

Problem is the word "Most"

You use the term "most" but that is the issue. Some cables are just not data cables even though they may physically be larger. There is a tendency the last five years to put the "trident" logo on cables capable of charging and data transfer.

The only positive way to tell a cable is to test it with a DVM for continuity. The inner two conductors on the larger end are the data + and data - terminations. Check continuity at the other end to verify.

I love my NUVI 3597 very much.
the $50 is the starting price set for bidding.

3597

The nuvi 3797 is hard to beat, even with newer devices (unless you want a larger screen). I have two 3597's and they are still my favorites.

A replacement is probably your best bet, but just out of curiosity, did you try both MTP mode and mass storage mode?

It was at best a long shot, but worth a try. Thanks for reporting back.

Try a fix on the USB connector

Since the device seems to work OK, it might be worth a shot to check the USB socket. If it works you will have a tremendous sense of accomplishment!!

Having said that, I’m an engineer and a firm believer in the Engineer's Motto “If It Ain't Broke, Take It Apart & Fix It”.

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYULUh2Skdk on how to open the case and then view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vedk3QqU1o for the general info concerning the location of the USB connector and soldering.

Happen with my 2598....

A few years ago. No matter what computer I plugged the Nuvi into or what cable I tried it was not recognized and not mounted. Remember I tried a number of things; different USB ports, different USB cables, Nuvi reset (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136), switching modes (MTP to mass storage and back - http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41416), even removed the Garmin USB drivers and Garmin Express through the Control Panel > Apps. Then reinstalled. Even used USBDview (https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html) to remove the Nuvi USB entry. Don't remember exactly what fixed it but eventually Windows 10 started to see and mount the 2598 again and has worked ever since.

I have had a couple of

I have had a couple of Nuvi's that lost communication after the USB connector on the Nuvi broke connections at the circuit board from years of flexing. Was a bit finicky to resolder the connector to the Nuvi board but they are still working fine several years later.

Did you try wiggling the USB connection at the Nuvi while trying to connect? Maybe worth a try. There used to be a couple of videos on YouTube showing how to open the Nuvi and do this repair.

I did try holding it in

I did try holding it in different positions thinking exactly that problem, no luck. Since I've decided to replace it, I'll probably take it apart for a look. Thanks!
