USB device (nuvi 3590) not recognized

Lately I am having an issue with my desktop computer running Win 7 not recognizing my 3590. The 1490, 750 and 76csx all work fine. As does the 3590 when connected to my laptop (also running Win 7) and using the same cable.

The issue: Run Basecamp, then connect the 3590. Basecamp starts reading the files on my 3590 and microSD. After a minute or so, the listing in Basecamp for the 3590 goes blank and Windows informs me that a USB device is not recognized.

I have tried different cables and USB ports.
I've also uninstalled the Garmin driver and reinstalled it (the latest version).

In Googling the issue, I see that this problem has been ongoing for at least 4 years, but there are no viable solutions.

This appears to be an issue related to Basecamp. A few weeks ago when I updated CNNA there were no problems with the download to the 3590. I was, however, experiencing issues with Basecamp before the update. As long as I'm not running Basecamp, I can view and work with the files on the 3590. (I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Basecamp.)

Perhaps some wise member of this group has also experienced this and solved it.

I think you should unplug

I think you should unplug the garmin device, and thenuninstall all garmin software and usb cable drivers, and reinstall them.
Connect garmin again.

Problem solved (maybe)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think that my problem is related to contact reliability of the USB cable.

The cable I ordinarily use to connect the 3590 is one that came with a Kindle. With the Kindle cable it works sometimes if I wiggle the plug around. The cable that came with the 3590 is a bit thicker and the connection to the 3590 is somewhat tighter, but I did also experience an issue with good connectivity using it when I was groping for a solution.

So, when I connected the 3590 to my laptop, the connection must have been just right.

It seems strange that Basecamp will start reading the map files on the 3590, then a minute or so later loose the connection. And, it does this on a consistent basis.

In any event I'm going to order another cable.

a clue

The thickness of a cable can give a clue to the size of the conductors inside the outer sell. Kindles don't transfer a lot of data over USB (at least my wife's doesn't) so the data conductors can be smaller than the power conductors. At the speeds we try to push data across these cables, it's the surface area of all the conductors that count (Shannon effect) and your Kindle cable can just be chocking off the data transfer.

Device not recognized

I have that problem a lot of times, and it's usually the MTP setting on the device. Somehow it switches itself back to the setting that doesn't get recognized at the USB port.

I went CRAZY over this for weeks before someone told me about this setting.

I believe whenever you do a hard reset it reverts back to the default MTP mode, you must change it again to Mass Storage (MS).

some ports may be more compatible than others

although the original poster has seen consistent behavior across ports on a given machine, I have seen connection to my 3790 LMT get dropped when using some ports on my PC more often than when using others.

I'm just throwing this into the mix in case other people who happen across this thread when trying to debug their own problems may not yet have tried a different cable and port combination.

MPT mode then transitioning it & back to MASS storage's settings

as iv'e hard booted more then once this 3590, can now only figure its stuck their too, as well, as your comment got me thinking in regards enough to drop you a line.

meaning, how now were you able to transition your unit back to Mass Storage, curious,as this could be the fix i'm needing as well, as iv'e tried everything else...

I'm not sure if this answers your question since you're stating you hard booted. If you mean a hard reset, then as I stated in my earlier post:
I believe whenever you do a hard reset it reverts back to the default MTP mode, you must change it again to Mass Storage (MS).

You will need to go into the diagnostics screen again and change it each time after a hard reset.
