Anyone else get this message on a 3597?

Anyone else get this message: "Device will restart in X seconds to reload map data." After procrastinating for the last year, several weeks ago I finally updated to map version NA 2022.20. Ever since, I get the "restart" message during the startup from the powered down state. The main difference between versions is that NA 2022.20 loaded the maps onto the micro SD card, and the previous installed version (NA 2021.20) didn't load anything on the micro SD card. I explicitly power down the 3597 to prevent the battery from running down between uses.

no restart message

My 3597 never displayed that restart message. What has happened is that, when updating maps, Garmin Express says the map was installed successfully when it really isn't. Then I install the map again and it does work properly. So in your situation, my advice is to install the map again.

A separate issue, but related, is the software (firmware) update which, if needed, would be done before the map update. The GPS is restarted automatically to install the software. For my 3597, every time, it does not restart and I must restart it manually and the software is then installed.

the power issue

It may be that a lack of electricity is the only thing causing the issue. Due to the pandemic, we are using our GPSs a lot less and the battery is not keeping a good charge by being connected to the car cigar lighter outlet. If the GPS is being stored powered down, I would charge it from time to time using a wall charger. Also charge it before using it.

Reinstall map.

Neither of my 3597's exhibit this behavior. They both have the 2022.20 map. I would follow the advice given by Dobs108 and reinstall the map.

If that doesn't work, one other thing you might want to look for is to connect the 3597 in mass storage mode and take a careful look at files in the .system and map folders to see if there may be some orphaned files from previous map updates that didn't get properly deleted. Some versions of Garmin Express have been known to leave behind some orphaned files.

No Restart Message

No

map update

I have never gotten this message. I have updated but have not confirmed that it has actually updated since there is no update confirmation on the NUVI. I guess I will have to check it next time I am in the car.

Map info

Go to the Map Info screen and it will show you the version being used.

Yes

Baumback, yes I've seen it several times in the past although I can't remember if it was on a nuvi 3597 or a DriveLuxe 51, so you're not alone. I doubt that it's a weak or discharged battery since I keep my units being used well-charged.

I never documented the device, map version, presence or absence of SD card, powering through cigarette lighter plug or internal battery, reboot or wake up status, etc. when it occurred and it may be that the warning eventually wouldn't appear since I haven't seen it recently. Like you, I also power down my devices upon returning home or similar situation but will let my device go to sleep if I'm just doing some grocery shopping and returning to the car in under an hour. I'll try to remember to keep this in mind if I see it again so I can shed a bit more light for us.

At least I'm not the only one

I always backup before an update and since I have two 3597 units (with only one giving the message) I have the ability to perform bit-to-bit comparisons on all the files on the two units. I reinstalled NA 2022.20 on the first unit and performed a "before" and "after" comparison. The files compared identical except for a few .gma and .unl files. I performed a bit-by-bit comparison between the two units with essentially the same results (i.e., with the same differences as "before" and "after" and a few expected differences in files like the log files and several other non-consequential diferences). Nothing seems obvious to me.

I expect you also tried to search the internet for any other occurrences as I've done. Google's search took me to only this thread at The Factory meaning it's likely that no one else has reported this and that Garmin has no FAQ. Given that Garmin's software has the "reload" phrase available in their devices must mean that they knew there would be situations that require it to display.

No, I would try reinstalling.

No, I would try reinstalling.

Tried reinstall

Did try reinstalling with no change.

AV?

Along with what dobs108 said earlier, temporarily disable any antivirus you may be running, then attempt a map update.

Internal?

If Baumback's results are anything like mine results were when it happened, the map reloads properly and works fine after the "Must reload Maps" message so it's not a corrupt map. I'm leaning toward some internal intermittent component issue in the GPS or SD card, if one is present. This is also an especially hot summer so device temperature could also be involved. It is such a mystery that only two of us in all of the internet search world (I think) have seen the message, yet Garmin somehow predicted it could appear when they added the Reload Message to their operating system.

As I said earlier, I think the message stopped happening after a while but I'm not sure of that. If Baumback can let us know at some point that the message stops appearing, that'd be helpful and ends the problem although we'd still be clueless as to the cause. My appearance of the message did not appear with every reboot or awakening from sleep. What is your frequency of seeing it, B?

But really, both of us who have seen this happen just have a 20-second or so delay, since after the reboot, all works well so it's only a minor issue.
