SD Card problem in one of 2 2689LMT’s

Last map update one of two 2689LMT’s consistantly failed to load on SD Card.

This update today acted the same way on another brand new 16GB SD Card.
The two 2689’s act differently when attached to computer:
The one that updates correctly reports as a 2689 with a card attached.
The one that fails reports as 2 separate SD Cards.

During the update GE Sees the SD Card, and loads to it, but fails at end, and the SD Card pops up as if just being attached to computer again.
Does this on 3x cards: 2 brand new, all 32GB or less in size.

So it seems that on first connect, where Windows sees 2x separate drives instead of one with 2x drives is the reason for failure.

Anybody know how to re-link the SD Card within the Garmin??? At present I’m running without SD Card installed as it fails to complete the update…
Thank You!

Just

for what its worth, have you created a "Garmin" folder on the SD card???

This problem has been

This problem has been mentioned recently. One of your units is in Mass Storage and the other is not. The one that does not show an SD card and Garmin is in the incorrect mode.

Also, for what it may be

Also, for what it may be worth, my 2689 loaded up the new map without any issues on a 16GB card. The card is formatted as FAT 32 with 8192 bytes sector size.

I mention this because someone last week had an issue, not on a 2689, but for some reason his sector size was, as best I recall 64K, and they encountered problems with the card being recognized.

Bad SD Card

SD cards can go bad. They are cheap enough I would get another and then see if the problem goes away.

OP tried a new card

Yes, have tried 4 different 8,16&32 GB Cards
All act the same. New or used

So. How to resolve this?

Thanks phranc for that

Thanks phranc for that information...

First I tried the steps in the video without an SD Card in 2689LMT.. It reports as MASS STORAGE

Next, disconnected, Shut down Garmin, added 16 gb SD Card, Powered up connected to PC.... Reports as 2 separate Drives.... Not one....

disconnected, Shut down Garmin, then Powered up with 16gb SD Card installed, and checked the steps in video again.... Garmin Reports in MASS STORAGE Mode Still, (But reports as 2x drives... connected to PC)

SO, maybe it's a card formatting issue....

Download SD Card Formatter from your link... to PC... Formatted that card... Installed in Garmin.....

Connected Garmin to PC...... IT STILL REPORTS AS 2 SEPARATE DRIVES!!!

Disconnect yet again... Shut Down Garmin... Power up with freshly formatted 16 gb SD Card installed , follow steps in video... But this time Toggle settings through all seclections, then save in MASS STORAGE MODE.

Finally.... Connected Garmin to PC again....

STILL REPORTS AS 2 SEPARATE DRIVES.... NOT REMEMBERING MASS STORAGE MODE!

So with all the actions taken, Same as 6-8 months ago, on a different card, when I first needed to add a SD Card for Map Update.... and it failed then?????

So... If an SD Card will

So... I'm assuming it's Broke in a strange way!

If an SD Card will not be in this GPS's future.....
I started deleting the foreign texts, voices and some vehicles I don't plan on using.... Freed up a little over 1GB of space --This with the Latest NA Map installed... And, Yes! It still works! have a few more I could delete if needed.... (Shades of 660 operations from years ago!!!)

That should give me some breathing room for a while!!!

PS.. answer to previously asked question not put in prior post... Yes, there was a Garmin folder on SD card.... And again after format.... So it's putting Garmin Folder on new card(s), but not remembering it's in Mass Storage Mode....

FWIW, I'm using a Mac and

FWIW, I'm using a Mac and whether in MTP or Mass Storage, it always shows as two Drives. MTP is the preferred mode.

I'm trying to remember from when I ran Windows only how it behaved, but someone else still running Windows is going to have to jump in here.

Time for a Hard Reset?

The Mass Storage Mode (MTP Settings) set to 'MTP Auto Detect'? This should be the chosen option in order for the PC to recognize the GPS properly for maps updating via Garmin Express.

If still not working, try a master/hard/factory reset:

Thank You, tli....

Silly me, I followed the video.... figuring that Mass Storage was correct — Changing to "MTP Auto Detect" FIXED IT!!!

Now shows up as one drive with an attached memory card!

I'm all set for NEXT MAP UPDATE!!!

I'm going to just assume that this 2689LMT was set this way from the get-go... As I never went into that setting prior to today.... and never tried to use an SD card for map update prior to 6-8 months ago... When I first attempted it, and it failed...
My Wife's 2689LMT updated to SD card without an issue 6-8 months ago.... And a couple days ago, too.

Could Reinstall Map Update for Full Coverage Now

JanJ wrote:

I'm all set for NEXT MAP UPDATE!!!

If your 2689LMT connects to your PC running Garmin Express now, the software would automatically detect the SD card and offer to reinstall the current map (CNNANT 2022.20) for the full eligible coverage, superceding the reduced partial coverage that was previously installed to fit in its internal memory. However, if the partial coverage suffices for the meantime, then you could wait till the next map update. The choice is yours now... grin

I had deleted enough items

I had deleted enough items that full NA map update worked internally.
I have since installed an SD card. Then changed display mode so SD card displays as part of Garmin. Once maps need the card space it is available!

Thanks again for the direction!
