Garmin Drive 52 M > "Where To" > "Cities"??

Hi. I looked through the FAQ's, my owners manual, searched the internet and this website but couldn't find the answer. I apologize if the questions have been asked or the answer is obvious.

I recently bought a Garmin Drive 52M.

1.) Where is "Cities" located in the "Where To" interface?
(I'm aware I could use the "search" box, "cities ahead", browse the map for a city, the "trip planner" app, etc. )

2.) How do you clear the "search" box history? I don't care for a track record of what I've searched for.
(I'm aware of clearing the "recent" data, resetting the user data, etc.)

Thanks in advance

No city “list” if that is what you expect.

Are you anticipating a list of cities? I don’t have a Drive 52M but do have some later nuvi models and a list doesn’t exist. You have to type in the city name and may depending on model first select state.

Did you actually purchase a 52M (whatever that may be) or a 52LM?

Well

Should be under Where to, Categories, Cities (or Towns). You should also be able to add it to the main screen so you can just do a Where to, Towns

Not sure you can clear the search box, although a master reset would do it.

City "List"

Thanks.

Thanks but no, I wasn't expecting a list. I was expecting a "Cities" icon like my old Nuvi 57LM. But "Cities" icon apparenly doesn't exist in the Drive 52. I can live with that.

I actually purchased a "Garmin Drive 52". However, on the back it is labeled as a "Garmin Drive 52 M". Just wanted to be specific.

Hope the links work!

Old Nuvi:

Drive 52 Label:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/14WzyrOCWrkIYrWnZU1yu-XQic8I...

Drive 52 (no "Cities" icon):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iRxBL7DwIXUU17Fv_V3RQOP0QXN...

Drive 52 "Search" box (permanent history):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gE8x3ng4KimzQU8I0-kxs0oEUwY...

Unfortunately, a reset clears all of my personal data, which is a pain. Not a big deal, just seems like a oversight by Garmin. Thanks to all.

Search Box history workaround

I figured a workaround to clear a Garmin Drive 52 "search" box history without doing a master reset.

You have to overwrite or delete (it will regenerate) the "recent_searches.db" file. Make backups first!
Hardly worth the effort, but a solution.
Come on Garmin! Really?

Much easier, Where to,

Much easier, Where to, Recent. Then open the drop down and delete all.

Phranc: Thanks but nope.

Notice my original post where I state, "(I'm aware of clearing the "recent" data, resetting the user data, etc.)"

Clearing "Recent" doesn't clear "Search" box entries. In fact, you can have an input history in the "Search" box and simultaneously nothing in "Recent". This is an obvious limitation to a Garmin Drive 52.

Sussamb said it best. "Not sure you can clear the search box...". He's right in the sense you can't clear search history via the device.

Doesn't matter... small potatoes.
Thanks.

Sorry, I was working off my

Sorry, I was working off my phone and missed that part, I guess. I'm not sure that it uses Recent searches to populate that banner. I think it's using it/s internal database that's inaccessible to users. I have made searches where I know it's the first time I've made it, and started getting partial matches as I searched.

Try it, start typing Kalamazoo and see if it won't start making matches. I'll bet you never searched for that, before.

Are you sure? On the where to screen if you scroll down is there not an icon that says something like Personalise? According to page 5 of the manual it should be there.

If you click that you can select the Towns/Cities icon in Categories, which adds it to the home screen.

Sussamb - Cities Icon

Sussamb
"Are you sure? On the where to screen if you scroll down is there not an icon that says something like Personalise?"

There is an icon that says "Add shortcut" but not "Personalise".

Sussamb
"According to page 5 of the manual it should be there."

I looked for the info in the manual before posting with no luck.

I looked again and searched for the word "Personalise / Personalize" in the Garmin Drive 52 manual that I downloaded in PDF format from the Garmin website
https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/drive52/EN-US/GUID-4... No luck.

I also did a search for the words, "town(s)" and "cities". The only reference to cities is "up ahead cities" (which I understand) and "changing the search area" (city search area). But no reference to Cities as an icon option in Where To.

Sussamb
"If you click that you can select the Towns/Cities icon in Categories, which adds it to the home screen."

I've listed below what is available on my GPS in the Where To section:

Where To?
-Go Home
-Address
-Saved
-Recent
-Categories (with subcategories below)
-History (History channel, not device history)
-TripAdvisor
-National Parks
-Foursquare
-Intersections
-Coordinates
-Add Shortcut

Under Categories
-Restaurants (and subcategories)
-Shopping (and subcategories)
-Everyday Life (and subcategories, 14 total-no cities)
-Gas Stations
-Banks & ATM's
-Parking
-Rest Areas
-Art & Entertainment (and subcategories)
-Attractions (and subcategories)
-Recreation (and subcategories)
-Medical Care (and subcategories)
-Transit (and subcategories)
-Lodging (and subcategories)

Under Add Shortcut
-Favorite Search (which is just the generic search bar)
-Category (see above list)
-Saved Place

I find it comical! Everything under the sun, except "Cities"! I'm just surprised, that's all.

I'm pretty sure Garmin intends for users to search for cities with the generic search bar. Like I said earlier, I can live with that.

From the manual: "You can use the search bar to search for locations by entering a category, brand name, address, or city name."

This of course led to the search bar history issue, and I can live with that too.

My old Garmin Nuvi is almost shot. I purchased the Drive 52 because it has the physical dimensions I need for a motorcycle and I can use it with gloves. Occassionally, I like to search for a city during a road trip and I simply got used to the Nuvi. I plan trips mostly via BaseCamp anyway.

I suppose I was hoping a Garmin Drive 52 owner would either confirm my post, or point out where I missed the option (which is still possible at my old age).

Sincere thanks to all.

Well

Add shortcut is the same as Personalise, just different locales. The manual I looked at said Personalise.

So IF towns/cities is available you'd click the Add shortcut icon then navigate to wherever towns/cities is hiding. On mine it's in Categories then scroll down and it's close to the end of the list. If you can't find it there then I suspect for some reason the software on your model doesn't have it sad

That just about sums it up!

Sincerely, thank you for your interest.

For other Garmin Drive 52 owners that may stumble upon this post:

Barring future updates...
1: There's no "Cities" icon in the "Where To" section, or anywhere for that matter.
2: There's no way to clear search bar history via the device except reset.

In the old days when all Garmin "On the Road" models behaved similarly, we could almost always give advice based on how our multiple Garmin devices operated and help out a Garmin user with a model we didn't own.

In the past several years, several of us have offered advice that we were convinced would solve a task posed by an owner of a Garmin model we didn't own...only to find that our thinking was wrong about a particular model or series and our suggestions didn't apply to that particular series. This appears to be the case here too.

I've tried to remember to write in my replies that my suggestions work with the devices I own but may not apply to a model I don't own, but I forget to say this almost as often as I remember.

Part of the problem we have is that a specific Garmin's Owners Manual now covers several models so even Owners Manuals may explain how to use a feature that may not be present in every model supposedly covered in the manual.

Another issue here at the POI Factory is that our users with the experience to answer some of the more unusual questions tend to be users that buy and use the more advanced Garmin models. Beginning about the time when nuvis were being replaced by Drive models, these issues became more common since the "entry-level" Drive models (just Drive xx, not DriveSmart xx, DriveAssist xx, DriveLuxe xx, etc.) came out missing many features offered in essentially all older models; for example, the ability to view photorealistic junction views, navigation voice engines, map regions included, etc.

It seems likely that the ability to search for Cities is missing in the Drive 52 and quite possibly all entry-level Drive models. sad Now if I could only say that I'll remember this the next time I offer help. wink That's unfortunate even though I don't search for a City too often. I tend to search for a City only when I'm trying to kludge a route to do a more scenic drive by going through a smaller town or when I don't have a specific address to set as a destination.

That's makes perfect sense and I agree.

I don't expect too much from an entry-level, practically disposable model. It will work fine for my purpose (motorcycle).

BTW: I use the "city search" for the same reasons you described. Well, I used to use it that way, anyway!

Appreciate the insight.
