Garmin Express Will not Open in Widows

Just got a new HP laptop with win 10. Down loaded Garmin Express and it will not open. Tried uninstall, restart, reinstall several times and nothing seems to work.

Anyone else has this problem?

I had suggested this and I'd like to add that there is a utility that will scan the registry and prepare a list of all related entries. This is opposed to use the Find/Find Again which can be very time consuming.
You can find the utility at https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.html

Just make sure a backup of the registry is made prior to actually doing the deletions.

Ive used those before and though i'm ok with doing it that way, one by one is a lot safer because you should read the entry before you delete it. I'd hate to think you would trust the app and delete it all at once. Some entries are not only Garmin specific and should be left in there. After you did a uninstall its the leftovers that you want to get rid of. As far as backing up the registry.....blah. Its ok if you use the built in registry export. Any app i've ever used and i've used a lot of them have failed miserably in restoring the registry completely. Most of the time you screwed it up so bad that your system won't even start right, and you hope last known configuration works...lol. I used to be a beta tester for microsoft during the windows 95 era. I've done some doozies...lol. I can still muck things up but i'm a bit smarter now. I have use Ghost for the last 10 years or so. It makes an image of my boot drive. Restoring takes about 45 minutes. No pain and i'm free to go and muck things up again. Backing stuff up is talked about lots in here. How you do it or what you use is up to you. I can manipulate my OS and i can figure out why an might not work. I don't get frustrated, because i can go for coffee and reload my machine and i'm good to go.

If all instances are erased and i mean all and that includes in explorer then it has no choice but to install. Everything being equal and it ran before. I do have a complete install of GarminExpress form jan. of last year. Might want to find a large install. Mine is 111MB.

Restore point?

kilianjk, you wrote (in jest, I assume) earlier of doing a full fresh reinstallation of Windows 10 to solve the problem.

Does your PC have any Restore Points from a time when Garmin Express worked? If so, you could restore your PC to that point and try to install GE, now 7.4.1, and see what happens. You would have extra work to do depending upon how far back the restore point was and what you've done on the computer since creating the point, but it should be less work than a fresh installation of Windows.

As always, good luck.

Cleaing registry

Garmin states (see https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=CNYikpxnK73h9lU6YXTGr5) to clear the Garmin related registry entries. By the way, not in particular step 14. Have you done that? Are you running 64-bit?

"To remove a Garmin application from the registry:

1. Press the Windows key + R

2. Type regedit

3. Click OK

4. Back up the registry

5. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER to show folders

6. Expand Software

I can see 125 DLL files where GE installed folder. but I can't know the relation between these DLLs and the DLLs (more than 600+) that are shown in the resistered_dll_view.

As an alternative, I think I would back up the registry, completely and manually uninstall GE, then remove all entries within the registry referencing GE. Then reinstall from scratch.

By the way I have seen some issues with CCleaner on new PC. If you have it disable it or better yet get rid of it!

Give this a try

Reinstall GE, test it to see if you got lucky this time. If not hit the Windows and X key together.

Select Apps & Features (should be near the top).

Scroll down looking for Garmin Express. That will tell us if it has loaded.

Check the size if listed; mine shows 520 MB, yours may vary but should be something near that number.

BY the way, back to your original problem statement where you said "Down loaded Garmin Express and it will not open." What exactly are you doing to open the application. Double clicking a desktop icon or ????

Back to basic questions

Let's do some debugging:

I am assuming that you have a way to "At Least Try To Open" Garmin Express on your computer.

If so, what exactly do you do?
Double click on an icon?
or
Type "garmin" in windows search box (at lower left of screen) and select "Garmin Express from the dialog box that pops up

Just on the off chance that neither of these are true, you can see whether on not GE is installed by:

looking for Installed programs by
1. Press "Windows" + "X".
2. Select "Programs and Features" (mine was "Apps and Features"
3. Here you can see the installed programs.

Is Garmin Express in the list?

Assuming you can "open" GE, do so

Then, hold down the CNTL and ALT keys while pressing the Delete key to bring up a Dialog box from which you can choose "Task Manager"

In the dialog box that then opens - hopefully on the "Processes" tab - do you see GE listed as running?

If you will do this, it will set a baseline for us to discuss

Maybe look elsewhere in Task Manager

There is potentially an issue with the steps you outline to check Task Manager. GE runs perfectly fine on my Dell laptop with current Windows and GE. Having said that I do not see it listed in Task Manager when it is open and regardless of the setting that controls running in the background. If running, it is listed on the Startup tab and as soon as I shut GE down it disappears from that tab.

So, in summary, GE has to have the run in background enabled and it usually will since that setting is enabled by default.

Then open Task Manager. I personally find it easier to use the Power Menu found by hitting the Windows logo (near bottom left corner) plus the "X" key. Then Task Manager will be listed at the top of the 2nd group.

Unanswered question

Several of us have asked, and I think the question remains unanswered, how are you actually attempting to open GE. From a Win 10 menu item or a desktop icon?

John from PA

I like it

Great idea and something that the average person wouldn't think of. Given kilianjk's struggles and having done so much already, means we should be thinking outside the box (or screen in this case), even for really unlikely possibilities.

GE not opening

Ok last year i had problems with a program or app i had run for years called Playon , lets you record from Netflix and Hulu and such. After contacting their support people i was advised to download and run a program called "Revo Uninstaller" It worked like a charm....https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-uninstaller-free-download/ Hope it helps

Revo Uninstaller

Revo Uninstaller comes with a free trial, which lacks some of the high-end features of the pro version which I think is around $25. It can delete some registry errors that usually come with deleting programs, but the free version doesn't remove all of them. To do that, you need to upgrade to the paid version.

The OP has been furnished, in this thread, the manual means to clean registry and other options to clean the registry, without any success. One key question remains unanswered, how is GE being initiated? If it is from an icon there are some security issues that need to be set. Microsoft also has a .NET framework repair procedure that I think should be run. From posts, its seems as though GE will run on an HP laptop. At this stage I’m more inclined to think the issue is .NET framework related or perhaps caused by the sequence of setting up a profile. In fact the first thing I would do, if this occurred on my machine would be to run the .NET repair sequence, then set up a “test” profile, then install GE and then retest.

One issue I see is I think we have two people in this thread with the issue, so we don’t know who has done what. Part of the downside of thread highjacking.

Due to other problems, I had to Reload W10 Home on this system...

But W10 was fully updated before GE Install...

Methinks GE needs an OLDER Net Package.... ??

No problem here with a HP

No problem here with a HP laptop running Windows 10 2004. I update Win 10 about a year after it is nationally released. 2004 broke my printer/scanner. Got the printer working using the built in software but have to scan to usb stick at the printer/scanner and copy it to the computer. No other problems with Win 10.

Thinking out of the box...

I've repeatedly asked how is GE actually being run; by clicking a desktop icon or by running (for test purposes) the executable.

I bring this up because in either case, certain security permissions have to be enabled. If you right click on the desktop icon for instance, then go to Properties (at the bottom) it will take you to the Garmin Express Properties. It might be interesting to know just what is configured on the "Security" tab. For my Win 10 the following are configured with SYSTEM pretty much having full control.

SYSTEM
"my profile"
Administrators
INTERACTIVE

Map update

Kilianjk, I'm not sure if you're in Los Angeles or Louisiana (or some other LA) but given your problem and inability to update maps and software, I wonder if you could find someone with a functioning Garmin Express who would accept your Garmin and do the update for you. I know that if someone living near me asked here at The Factory to update their device, I'd be willing to do it.

If done, that'd get you fixed without having to buy a new computer or do a fresh install of Windows to your PC now. You have a ways to go yet but keep in mind that if a Garmin hasn't had a map update in 24 months after first being put in use, you may lose the ability to do future updates.

Another possibility would be to keep an eye out for a used Windows desktop or laptop that you could buy which would solve your problem and also give you a backup computer, always nice to have.

Just a thought... neutral

In any event, if my problem, I'd try to reinstall Garmin Express every now and then just in case a future GE version or Windows update automagically fixes your computer's issue.

Some info needed

There is a mode of operation of Windows 10 Pro that can limit what installs and runs. It is termed “S mode” and since we have run out of resolution here it might be worth checking to see if you are in S mode.

To check, go to Settings > System > About. On the About page, scroll down to the “Windows Specifications” section. If you see the words “in S mode” to the right the Edition entry, you're using an S Mode PC. If you don't, you're not using S Mode.

Just for information, it probably is worthwhile to let us know what these steps yield.
