Fixed install to PC issue

John from PA wrote:

Instead of installing to the PC, do a direct install to the Garmin device. I have found that to be reliable with older devices like a nuvi 265.

The solution was to delete the downloaded map (in Windows 10 it's located at: C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Map) and let GE re-download and install it to the computer.

You should never just delete the map file using File Explorer. Instead, use "Start + Control Panel + Programs and Features" by selecting the map and "Uninstalling" it. Otherwise, you leave entries in the Registry that can later cause problems. Plus, there may be other files left on your computer and BaseCamp may show maps that don't exist. I uninstall the old map everytime after installing a new map.

You can still uninstall the old map data using "Programs and Features" to clean out the registry even after deleting the old map directory.

I wasn't deleting the installed map I was deleting the initial set of files that GE downloads PRIOR to installing the map to the PC. The problem I was having was GE wasn't installing the map in the first place due to an incomplete download of the map files to the PC hence there was no reason (and no way) to remove it through the Windows 10 Apps and Features section.

FYI for those who don't know how GE works. What GE does, in Windows 10, is downloads the map (and other) updates to the C: ProgramData GARMIN CoreService Downloads folder (note I didn't use slashes because board code removes them for some stupid reason). After GE downloads the files, THEN it installs them to the GPS and or the computer.

The GE program on my Windows 10 PC installs the maps that BaseCamp can use to the install location: C: ProgramData Garmin Maps directory. If one notes that is DIFFERENT than the download location used to download the files initially.

There are various past posts going back years detailing that one can remove the downloaded files from the CoreServices Downloads folder location after installing the maps to the PC and GPS to free up space. Otherwise the install files for the PC and GPS remain there so users can, I assume, reinstall them if needed to avoid another long download of of the files.

Oops, didn't read closely enough. My bad.

As to entering paths to files just use a "Slash" (/) instead of a Backslash and Windows will still interpret it correctly if you copy and paste. This has been a problem here for a long time.

No problem with GE updating

No problem with GE updating the lower 49 states. I have an 8GB SD card, not sure why I can't get all of NA as it loads the lower 49 to the SD card and there is over 5GB remaining.

Tried again on a different

Tried again on a different Win 10 Enterprise...

Took almost eight minutes to "check" for updates on a DriveSmart 55.

Then the 2699 took 30 seconds to find the new maps.

Honda CR-V using GE

No maps...still even though Garmin's site says there are new maps...SIGH!

Thanks for the update.

about an hour

is what it took and all seems well will find out soon enough with a trip to Seattle

Just updated Nuvi 2455LTM and 2555LTM...

to 2021.20. Started with a GE update first. Map updates went well. About 50 minutes from start to finish for the first unit and then about 30 minutes for the second one. Not bad for an old Windows 7 laptop with a little over 3 MB/s download speed.

Deleted old SID, JCV and SQLite files after update to keep more free space on units. We're now a couple of steps closer to the next trip.

Will drive around locally and do a few tests on the new map.

thank you

I will have to update.

Thanks

Thanks for letting us know it is available.

Updated two DriveSmart 61,

Updated two DriveSmart 61, 15 to 20 minutes each.

Also updated a couple Zumo's, one 450, one 550, had to do a split install, ran out of room years ago. Unit would only accept Canada and Border States, but put the entire update in the SD card in each one via Map Install, a lot longer but appears to have done so successfully.

Went ok

Installed without problems to my sister's Nuvi 1450. Took about 45 minutes to back up the 1450 first, and then about another 45 minutes to install the new release. All routine.

updating now.

New map more Gb but less POI

Update after more than 1000 miles of travel. New map has more Gb but there still have some defaults:
- speed limit still missing or wrong numbers such as under 30 miles but it says 40 or more. It's dangerous if you look and trust only on GPS. Luckily new vehicles have camera to look the speed sign on the road, but that the dream upcoming new cars only.

- Some update new bridges and roads, but it still missing a lot of small rural roads. It's weird because this is the map of 2021.20 from Garmin, on my car, GPS dated from the year 2018, but they do have small road name at many rural areas.

- POI of restaurants and many more have less data, and you cannot find it, still need google map to find places, except some places you cannot access internet then you are doom, especially you are on the mountain, phone signal normally is very weak. No internet at all.

- Many addresses cannot find from this new map, still need to find on google map then put the location by specific North and West number. That's super odd, even these addresses are not from small cities.

Many more sad hope people can enjoy new map as mine, but still keep hoping Garmin updating more

Thank You

Just finished with no problems, took about 30 minutes

Thanks

Thanks for the info
