are small, 6" black objects at intersection redlight cameras?

i've seen some intersections w/ small black objects probably around size of can of soda w/ two protruding black metal parts. are they redlight cameras? they're not like the 12" silver boxes the size of a shoe that look more like cameras.

cameras

I think they are

If they are mounted up high

If they are mounted up high on the traffic signal cross-beams toward the middle of an intersection facing oncoming traffic, probably not. Those are likely traffic detection devices for controlling the traffic signals.
Cameras are usually mounted in boxes on a pole placed on the r.h. side of the street, pointing toward the intersection so they can get a shot of the license plate if you cross the line after the light turns red.

More than likely those small soda can sized objects are Opticom's. Their purpose is to sense the white strobes on emergency vehicles and change the lights so they can pass safely through intersections.

It's also possible

that what is being seen are the cameras for the traffic actuated control system for the intersection.

I think you are looking at an opticon device.
These are devices that detect a strobe light from an emergency vehicle, then sends a signal to the traffic control device that allows for the vehicle to pass with a green light. The ones I am familiar with are smaller than you described.

Emergency Vehicle Detector

That is an emergency vehicle detector.

Possibly a receiver

If - as everyone has mentioned - these objects are mounted high on the cross support near a stoplight, they may be Opticons, OR they may be receivers to allow emergency vehicles to transmit a signal to change the light as they approach. Here in the Cleveland area some of the newer traffic lights have these devices mounted on them, and the police car, fire truck, rescue squad, etc. has a device that looks like a garage door opener transmitter they use. Some clever (used not in the most positive way) clowns figured out the frequency of the transmitter and were selling these to anybody who wanted to fork over the moolah. They got busted, but I think you can still find illicit transmitters somehwere on the internet.

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

Naaa

I think they are ray guns, look for the "Acme" name on the top. A guy named Marvin put them up there.

Indeed

Apparently, that issue was fixed a long time ago.

I understand that some of them work on LIDAR now, which is the same tech used for laser speed guns. A friend of mine reported an emergency vehicle approaching with sirens blasting, his laser detector going off, and the light immediately changing to green. Not sure if that's universal, but would solve the "strobing a flashlight at the sensor" issue (which is also what people used to do).

Oh, and indeed that is Beach & Edinger... I know that intersection very well. The pale ale at BJs is worth a stop.
