300 or 400 feet I think,

300 or 400 feet I think, whatever the default is.

Alert settings

I set the alert(s) to sound one time.

RL Cameras - 300 ft
Speed cameras in 45-55 zone- 600-800 ft
Speed cameras - 65+ zone - 1100 ft (yep we have 'em on the fwy in AZ)

Seems to give me time to check my speed to ensure I am ok prior to crossing the camera sensor.

Red-light camera queries (Houston) ›

I set mine to a quarter of a mile so that i know a head of time that a red light camera is ahead that way not to run the yellow just in case the camera goes off

I'm Cautious

I guess that I'm cautious because I set mine at 2000 feet. I want to be aware ahead of time. You know, the Boy Scout motto, Be Prepared.

During the upload process,

During the upload process, POIloaded will ask you to set the distance you'd like to have set for the alert sound. I happen to use 800 feet cuz Im more like an Eagle Scout vs a Boy Scout:)

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

0.20 mile

I want plenty of notice, so that when I'm approaching a stale green light with a camera, I can be ready for the typical shortened yellow. If I get too close before I know, I might end up getting rear-ended as I nail the brakes. If I now I've got a camera coming up, I have time to manage traffic in addition to the light.

How do you set it to sound one time. I have a nuvi 350 and it usually just keeps on and on.

Using defaults

I use the default. don't to cut it too close to the light, running the risks of being rear-ended or zooming thru the yellow lgiht. Just want to be save.

Ditto... 360

A different way

I personally like the way Tom Tom handles the alerts better. You can set the alert to trigger when the POI is on route or within a specified distance from your route. Then, the distance to which the alarm sounds changes dynamically depending on your speed. This goes from a few yards if you're going of really slow, to 400 or 800 yards for most roads, all the way up to 1 to 2 miles for highway speeds. smile

I generally set my alerts at 700 feet. Plenty of notice time, but not too far away.

Not doing anything worth a darn.

no sound

lucky you. My Nav does not have capabilities to do audible alerts.

Nuvi 350

I just gave my c340 to daughter. Looking for a replacement. Waht are you likes and dislikes about Nuvi350. I'm leaning towards this one. Sorry for the drift.

Can we get an answer? I already loaded the file and the only choice was distance( feet-miles or mt-km). Do I have a chance of setting distance and sound? reload it?
How do you do it on a Nuvi 660??

I'm guessing the nuvi 660 is similar to the nuvi 350:
1. From the menu screen, push the wrench.
2. Scroll until you seen the 'Proximity Points' option and press it.
3. After 'Alerts', push 'Change'.
4. Make sure the 'Custom Pois' is checked and push 'Audio' at the bottom of the screen.
5. Select 'Single Tone' and push 'OK', 'OK' again, 'Back', and 'Back' again.

Proximity warning for cameras??

Distance would be a function of the speed you typically travel when approaching each light and the total of your cognitive/reaction times. Most of mine are now up to 1/3 of a mile. I'm still trying to figure out if I drive too fast or think too slow!!

I programmed each on my PC, and then found that those locations didn't necessarily provide me with enough warning when "in the field". 0.30 miles seems to be safer as far as avoiding a $100 - $150.00 ticket here in Albuquerque!

Proximity warning for cameras??

The only warning I get on my Garmin 276C is a beep and a screen message.

I'd like to add a new voice message - "Redlight Camera approaching Leadfoot" or similar, but I don't believe it is possible to do.

Any advice???

THANKS!

I set mine up for 1000 feet.

I set mine up for 1000 feet. The idea is you want to give yourself enough time to stop if the light changes. Setting it to 400 feet at 40 miles per hour, you will get catch by the light every time. Give yourself enough time

The 276C is not capable of voice prompts or mp3 file handling.

To customize an audible alert such as "HEY Leadfoot, Approaching Redlight Camera!" Your gpsr would need to be able to handle compatible sound files.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

Too cautious

That sounds way too early. I would think at that point it would be ineffective. I max it out at 500 ft

i've set mine at 580

i've set mine at 580 ft....1/10 of a mile.

distance

I set mine to 500'

distance for proximity alerts.

safe distance to stop/slow down effectively in bad weather at 125% of speed limit. (works for me!)
