Is Garmin Map Updater still working?

I loathe Garmin Express. I have been using Garmin Web Updater and Garmin Map Updater for years. The Web Updater still seems to be working. The Map Updater, not so much. My Garmin Nuvi 2555LMT has the 2019.20 map. The Map Updater tells me that is the current version, but when I go to the Garmin website, I see that I am 3 versions behind. I have downloaded Garmin Express to get the 2020.20 version on my GPS. Why is the Map Updater still telling me that 2019.20 is the latest version?

Probably

Probably because Garmin dropped support for Map Updater long ago and although it continued to work for sometime not anymore.

GE has come a long way

I can remember that some time back GE had its issues but I have to say that for the last few years the product has been very reliable. Give it a chance!

Garmin Express very slow.

I am trying to update my Nuvi 3790 with the latest maps. It has bee downloading the map for the last 16 hrs and says 17 hrs to go. It usually takes about 1 1/2 hrs. I would like to cancel and try again but am worried it will screw up my Nuvi. Should I cancel or just let it keep going?

I don't believe GE is your problem. More than likely it's your connection to the Internet. You can Cancel, but let it finish canceling before you disconnect the unit from the computer. Be sure to follow the safe disconnect routine.

Restart your GPS. Then hold the off button until the Power Off dialing appears and choose yes. On your computer, Right click the GE Icon in the taskbar and choose Quit. Restart your computer.

Start GE and plug your GPS into the computer usb. Do not use a hub. If there is a USB jack on the back of the computer(laptop) use that one. Then try the download again. If possible try a different USB cord.

How do you connect to the internet and if known, what speed internet do you have? Do you have 2-3 family members streaming HD movies while you're trying to download?

Trying GE again

Looks like I don't have much choice if I am going to keep my maps updated.

Thanks for your responses.

I don't believe

Thanks for quick reply. It's not the internet connection, I tried a brief download from another source. I wonder if it's Garmin's server. I was only worried about disconnecting as it states do not turn off computer. However I will do as you suggest and start over.

set power options

Only use Garmin Express. If you feel Garmin Express is not working correctly for a long time while supposedly downloading a map, like phranc says, no harm will come to the GPS if you cancel the download and unplug it. Then restart the GPS (not just sleep), restart the computer, and run Garmin Express again.

While many of us (including me) are only using Garmin Express for updates, I have trouble half the time with the map update. I just run it again.

When updating GPS software, avoid unplugging the GPS without waiting a long time.

Get an SD card for your GPS.

Make sure the computer doesn't go to sleep. If it does, it is not really downloading.

In Control Panel / Power Options, set the PC to run all the time. If it is a Mac, I am sure there are similar power settings. If it is a laptop, make sure it is plugged in. Do not download a map on the battery. If using wifi, I hope you have a reliable connection.

Critical time for disconnecting or shutting down computer is when you have message, that maps are being transferred to GPS. Disconnecting at this time will mess up maps on device and may cause problems with unnecessary files occupying space on GPS. So during map transfer to GPS do not unnecessary brake this process.

During downloading maps from internet interruption is not that critical. You will have to restart download or, in worse case, reinstall Garmin software.

Garmin Map Updater

I have tried to use Map Updater the last two map updates with no success.

I ended up having to use GE.

Same here as pratzert. I

Same here as pratzert. I have been able to update the last 2 map releases using Garmin Express but not Map Updater.
