3597 Sound Issue

I had a recent problem with the sound on my Nuvi 3597. I while ago, I switched the voice from "Jill" to "Michelle". After a few hours of use, the sound quit working. Muting, un-muting and volume adjustments made no difference. A hard reset solved the problem temporarily but after a few hours of operation, the sound quit again. The problem disappeared after switching the voice back to "Jill".

I haven't updated the map or firmware in over a year. I suspect reloading the firmware and voice files will solve the issue but I haven't tried it yet. I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Odd

That is odd. No, I haven't experienced it since I avoid the non-TTS voices and pretty much stick with Karen.

I expect you're right and a reinstall of the voice file will work. Let us know your outcome.

a different problem

I have had a sound issue with my 3597 which seems completely different from that posed by the original poster. Nevertheless I'll mention it here in case someone is attracted by the thread title who might benefit.

While my 3597 lives comfortably in my 2002 Audi which provides constant 12 V power through the accessory socket regardless of the ignition being on or off, I have had trouble in rental cars which have the more common modern arrangement of switching the accessory socket power on with the ignition. Something about the shape of the transient on the 12 V line can fool the 3597 into starting up and getting into the state that corresponds to internal battery power, including the less capable speaker inside the unit instead of the powerful mount speaker, and also using lower background illumination.

So even on rental cars which have an accessory socket positioned so that I could leave the power cord connected, I have adopted the practice of always unplugging the unit, and only plugging it back in after the engine is running.

3597 on intermittent accessory power

The 12 volt power in the cigar lighter of my 2012 Nissan Altima only turns on in accessory or ignition mode. The 3597 never has gone into the mode archae86 describes.

It is possible there is a bad connection between the GPS and the powered mount, or possibly the mini USB connector on the power or traffic cable.

But I am forgetting the most likely connection to have an intermittent - the cigar lighter receptacle itself. There are no standards for this and there are many that are poorly designed.

Same here with my 2011 Honda Civic
