On line taxes

Interested on some feedback from users who actually use a on line tax service. Have used a tax preparer for years but thinking about trying one on line. Turbo Tax looks good and is listed on the IRS site. Like others a little concerned about the security . Any positive thoughts?

Anyway, back to taxes. Does anybody know of any good discount codes for Turbo Tax right now? In the past, my credit union offered one, but this year I don't see it.

Are you an American Express card member? If you are, check your AmEx online for the cash back offer. Add it to your account then redeem it.

Tax prep softwarein Canada

I've used Studiotax in Canada for years. Desktop app for Windows and MacOS. Allows up to 20 returns and is free.

Lost count of how many years I have used Turbo Tax. Excellent program.

I have not used the free version but expect it has the same base function as the boxed version and would produce the same good results.

same here

I am not an American Express card member, but thank you for the tup just the same. It did fire up Turbo Tax yesterday and work the numbers. I will be paying in, so there is no rush for me to actually file it yet, however.

Yup, no hurry if you owe uncle Sam. Turbotax will increase their prices after Feb 28. You might want to pay Turbotax now and file later, if that's possible.

Clarification on Turbotax - AmEx offer... I was wrong about getting cash back. I'm not getting $10 cash back credited to my AmEx account. The link (above) automatically lowers (Deluxe version) cost to efile Federal tax by $10. Instead of paying $39.99, I paid $29.99

Nearly every major bank, credit union, financial institution...

Nearly every major bank, credit union, financial institution, brokerage firm and insurance company offers a discount for TurboTax products. The best discount is from places like Fidelity or TD Ameritrade, which offer $20 off for TurboTax Online, TurboTax Live and TurboTax desktop downloads.

Yes, that is exactly what I did.

I highly recommend Turbo

I highly recommend Turbo Tax. I've been using it for about 20 years without issue. It's reliable and very helpful - at a fraction of the cost of any tax preparer. As for security, know that they use strong encryption and you can verify their security. As part of Intuit, they've been in this business for a long time and know how to do it right. That said, always do that at home, not at Starbucks or a hotel etc. To those concerned about online security, I always say... everything is done online these days even with banks - they send data from the branch to the server ONLINE over the internet. So whether or not you choose the convenience of accessing it yourself is your choice but the fact remains - it's already out there like it or not. Your employer likely has your information online in an HRIS system as well. Everyone's personal data is all online now in computer systems so your decision to briefly access it pails in comparison to what's being sent/accessed 24/7 between employers, financial institutions, credit reporting agencies, utility and other vendors, etc.

You will be paying more in Federal taxes than Amazon did

You will be paying more in Federal taxes than Amazon did (which is zero), and Amazon made $11 Billion in profit!

t

turbo tax worked like a charm. 7 days to get the refund after efiling. Noticed some pesky questions now about home loans if they are home equity, if used for home, ending balance, etc. I really thought the refund would get clipped from everything I knew, but ours went up. Guess I should stop calling it a tax increase then....

One thing that dawned on me. The annual bonus is like people who get overtime. A larger than normal amount is withheld. That should contribute to a refund scenario. Also, I was thinking the same % raise, let's assume it meets COLA, is regressive. The more one makes, the better. Example, someone whose salary is double, does not eat 2X the food, does not live in 2X a house, 2X the number if kids, etc.

The 10k SALT didn't affect us, and we have little mortgage interest.

turbotax

I used it for about 15 years and have it sent straight in to the bank ! sad part it gets spent just as fast about 9-10 days lol.
