Trip Planning Tools I'd Like To Have In Basecamp

Many of us still use Streets & Trips, despite the fact that Microsoft stopped supporting this, years ago. That's because we like some of the trip planning tools, in S&T.

I would like to get some of the features that you would like to see in Basecamp, that perhaps have been inspired by your experience with S&T.

Once we get some good feedback, I will see if we can somehow get this submitted to Garmin's software group and see if we can get improvements.

I'll start here and I encourage members to add their ideas. Please list your ideas and by all means if your ideas are the same as someone else's, please still include in your list also.

Keep it simple, with just the feature you want and a brief explanation if needed.

1. Scheduled Stops: Approximates overall travel time better
2. Show Imported POI's Along Route: eg. Show Rest Areas, Hotels, etc. from Imported POI files within a selected radius of your route.

I should have known. This is Garmin that we're dealing with.

Oh, well. Thanks for letting me know.

What's Garmin going to do now. Develop a new platform, that's harder to work with?

I wouldn't bet on them

I wouldn't bet on them developing ANY tools for automotive devices.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Well ...

There is their new Explore route planning website, but so far limited to only a few devices, and not any in the road devices. Whether they'll be added in future I don't know but BaseCamp initially was designed around handhelds so it's a possibility

Online Planner

I've only spent a little time with this; but, this Rand McNally online planner shows promise.

Looks interesting.

I'll try it tomorrow.

Does it export to gpx.

Well ...

Planning a trip is the easy part, the difficulty is getting your Garmin to use it correctly as almost certainly there will be map and other differences. It's where BaseCamp scores, as it uses either the map on your device or the same map installed to your computer.

Abs{lutely correct

Absolutely correct. You hit the nail on the head.

Export to GPX File

As for the Rand McNally planner exporting GPX, I do not know as I have not set up an account there.

Ouch

I plan on having my 64s a couple more years. I hope the Explore site will include the 64s, since Mac OS will advance and leave BaseCamp behind, and that appears to be pretty soon.

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

Well ...

Last year Garmin issued this, as you'll realise it's now gone the end of last year so they've missed their target of 'by end of year' smile

I'll stick with Basecamp

I didn't want to create an account, but form what I could see, there was limited options. Only downloaded to Rand McNally, and no export to gpx. No scheduled stops as in S&T, etc.

Maybe whats

needed is a Garmin Roads & Yoyages so as not to infringe on a copyrighted name. But setup in a similar format as MS S&T. Fat chance of Garmin doing that though.

garmin/delorme

What I hoped would happen when Garmin bought Delorme, is that they would incorporate some of Street Atlas or Topo into base Camp, guess that will not happen, next best thing would be for Garmin to set up either one to utilize the map releases then open source it.

here is how I use basecamp

build my route with Delorme Topo
export in gpx
import into basecamp
recalculate route
set date and time for starting point
adjust stop/via for 45 minutes
send to device
