Not Enough Room 2019.20

HI All. I have a 3590 and downloaded 2019.30 and all was OK. I then tried to load the large JCV file and got a message that there was not enough room.

So I deleted the small JCV file and STILL got a msg that there was not enough room.

Oddly, when I tried to reload the small JCV files, I was still getting the same "not enough room" message.

What next? Should I try to reload the maps doing only the lower 48? Or try to copy the maps to my SD card?

Thanks for any help.

Garmin express puts off using the sD card

Although the SD card no doubt was installed long before this, Garmin Express will continue to use internal memory instead of the SD card as the map grows with updates, until the last possible moment.

You could use alandb's cloning method to put the map on the SD card and then install the large junction view file.

Alternately, once Garmin Express runs out of room in internal memory, it makes use of the SD card automatically without all the work of the cloning method. Thanks to alandb, but I use Garmin Express instead of cloning.

We would need some method of forcing Garmin Express to do this now. Anyone have an idea?

Well ...

You can force Express to use the card by filling the internal memory with other files ... Or rename the extension of the gmapprom.img to say gmapprom.xyx ...

Not Enough Room

When you update maps do you remove anything first or just let GE handle it. Several years ago i was told here on POI Factory to do a complete backup then remove the very large img file in the system folder of the gps before updating. Still later i was told you didn't have to do that GE would get rid of it for you. It works much better at least for me to backup and get rid of the large img file in system folder of the gps both 3597 and 2797 ...works for me

Sucks...

Everytime you update, it requires more space.

I am sure

That Garmin know that this a problem for everyone. Why they do not install a larger internal capacity so they will solve this problem. Even if it will cost more money I am sure the consumer will pay for the extra benefit.

I will never forget that my 1450 the box it show the JCV ,but on the GPS it never was installed..
I hand up install it my self on the SD card.

Leftover files

All the advice you've been given so far is correct and worth looking into.

Since you say the problem arose when you tried to load the large JCV file, I wonder if this is the first time you've tried using the large JCV with the 3590. If you've used the large JCV before, earlier copies of it intended for earlier maps may not be auto-deleted when updating to a new map. Look to the nuvi and see if there are multiple JCV files and if so, delete all the older ones. Also, if you've ever loaded other maps manually, they will remain until you manually remove them. If you've ever used the clone technique in the past, it could be possible that other leftover files remain taking up space.

The 3590 is an 8GB device and is capable of having Garmin Express load map updates to an SD card when insufficient space is on the device so you could always reinstall the new map and find that this time, GE will use the SD card. I would not suggest you reload the map with only the Lower 48 states since that will make you slap yourself when you plan your drive to Alaska or Canada on vacation next summer. cool

Have you used the Large JCV before with the 3590? If so, you're one of the few that prefer it:

If using the Large JCV file, you must delete or at least rename the default split-screen JCV file that came as part of the map update so that the nuvi can use the manually-installed Large JCV.

Well ...

Adding to all that good advice Express works well if previously it's installed any update. If a user separately moves files, renames them, installs their own jcv file etc then Express won't, unsurprisingly, automatically sort everything out.

It's not a problem for everyone and newer devices do normally have sufficient memory.

3497

Assuming I will have the same issue with my 3497. Is there a way to see how large the updates are in advance? Also, there was a place here that showed the max capacity SD card by unit. Does anyone recall where that is? I "think" mine was 32GB microSD if I recall.

See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=UsL6MuMMCM8PpgAhUUCqp7... for sd card recommended size .The map update size for download should show once you get ready to start Garmin Express for the update.

@ Charles

That's a great link you provided listing the Garmin's various models recognized for SD cards. I'm sure it will be quite useful to members inquiring for their specific models.

first time i've seen this

This is the first time I've seen this:

Garmin Support:

"When using (an SD card) with a larger capacity, if there are too many files and/or large files on the card, the device may draw maps more slowly."

Ditto

I, too, was surprised to read this. It suggests that maybe using a 4 or 8GB SD card is preferable to using a 16GB or larger card. Thoughts, anyone?

Hmmm ...

I think it's more the assumption that if you have a large card you have a lot of maps etc. I use 32Gb cards in my devices but don't have much loaded and see no lag in performance

Thanx, I thought that may be the case. cool

GE reports free space

Later versions of GE report the used and free space on the internal memory card. With the device connected, go to Tools & Content. Your used space will be listed in the Device Storage section as percentage of full. Also listed will be the free space in MB. You may have to scroll down to see these values.

When the posted table shows 32GB as the maximum card size, heed that warning. More is not better. Just over the thanksgiving weekend I encountered a 4-year old disappointed that her Vtech camera was inoperative. Unfortunately Mom had bought a 64GB card, since it was the same price on Amazon. Generally the less sophisticated the device the more likely the limit is 32GB or smaller.

Thanks

I have an older unit 2590 and this info will be helpful, I suspect.

What about all those "Extra" features ?

Peeps always talking about extra things for Garmin to add, Blue tooth, Music player, Smart Phone link and on and on. Why not just use Garmin for its once original purpose, Navigation ?

Yep ...

That's what I do smile

Smartphone Link.

I consider Smartphone Link to be a navigation feature as it provides superior traffic reporting and real-time online POI lookup (via FourSquare).
