Garmin City Navigator North America NT v 2008 Upgrade Free from Garmin

I just spoke with Garmin Support. He told me straight out, if you buy a new unit now that has the old v8 maps, within 60 days of the release, Garmin WILL send you the new 2008 maps for FREE. You just need to give them a call. Not in stock now, but he said the policy and the DVD's will be in place near the end of July.
Great news from Garmin. Way to go!

On my c330, just loaded the DVD on the computer and followed on-screen instructions. Took me 50 minutes from start to finish. Imagine with your unit it would take longer (more bells & whistles than the c330). Good luck, have fun. Hope this helps...

Probably won't take any

Probably won't take any longer since it is updating just the maps. But who knows.

Garmin City Navigator North America NT v 2008 Upgrade Free from

My information is the same as Frank's. Thanks to POI Factory and this discussion I called Garmin today and after about a 15 minute wait to get to support he simply asked if I had registered my nuvi 670, I did, on 6/27/07. He verified all my information and gave me an order number for the free upgrade that would be mailed to me in about two weeks. All sounds good. I was inside the 60-day window. very efficient

Garmin Upgrade...

I've been watching the discussion about the upgrade to 2008 versions. I just got a c340 for my birthday and am curious as to how to tell what version is on it so I can know whether or not to begin the upgrade quest myself.

.

Hit Wrench>Map>Map Info

The map version will be there.

It should say either City Navigator North America v8 or 2008.

Thanks MM... looks like I'm

Contacted Garmim

I contacted Garmin via email and they replied the were sending me the Marsource DVD for free.

I just called Garmin tech

I just called Garmin tech support and they told me that they would be going through all recent device registrations and would be sending out the DVD to all qualified devices... should I believe them? Anyone else heard this?

.

I heard that about a month ago or so, but I don't believe it. If I were in that situation, I'd call to get my update if I were eligible.

A friend of mine got the v2008 maps today from garmin for free

He purchased his Nuvi 680 in Mid May. Not a problem Garmin said. He got his order number almost immediately.
He called a week ago to order and was told no.
He was a happy dude this afternoon.

Received Mine, Installed mine, ALL FREE

I found it was worth sitting on hold for 20 minutes than emailing. Any Garmin purchased after May 1st qualifies for a free NT2008 with overnight shipping.

I received it 2 weeks ago. I installed it, deciding to let it run while I took a nap. Came back and my new PC with that stupid Vista operating system decided to go into hibernation when the install was 90% finished! Installation failed. So I sat there for an hour and a half moving my trackball every 5 minutes or so and everything went fine. Found 2 errors in the DFW area, but has anyone else noticed that their Nuvi screen seems clearer and the unit more responsive? It also is giving me better routing without my having changed any of the settings. Maybe it's just happy?

No free upgrade

I just got off the phone with Garmin about my C330
I bought 2 days ago and was told that because a lot the units had the older software, the prices of them were reduced. The software upgrade is obtainable for $69.95 bringing it back to the normal price.(about $280) I will say this. I did buy it brand new for $199.95 from wal-mart who price matched Fry's electronics advertised special.

You can always

You can always return it if not satisfied. However, I realize that doesn't solve your problem. Many people say they don't do the updates annually as there isn't enough change to justify the cost. Also, the c330 is being phased out by Garmin, so you may want to go with something else. Personally, I love my c330, and, yes, I did get the update, but paid more than you on 5/22. So far, I haven't found a lot of improvement in the update, but that could change in another area. You'll have to weigh the issues. Good luck in your decision process and thanks for clearing up for the rest of us why Garmin is doing what it is...

try calling again

i would call them again, or email them (techsupp@garmin.com). it took me 2 emails to get a free update order. the first email said no, the 2nd one ordered it for me. i guess it depends on who you get on the phone/email.

V9 Update

I just received my upgrade disc for North America wich cost 69.99 from Garmin. The upgrade went perfect. I also decided to purchase the NT maps of europe, as I am planing a trip there in November. The price of this was a shock. 299.99. The interesting thing that came out of my conversation with the folks at garimn was that if you purchase the map upgrades on the SD card, there is no way to update the card. The next time you want to update it would cost you the full amount of the disc rather than the 70.00 fee. That means it would cost another 299.99 for europe and about 130.00 for north america. So don't bother with the cards. Just get the disc and download it to an SD card yourself.

Garmin has ISSUES

I don't know how a company can be so inconsistant and stay in business. I thought I finally understood the policy about map updates. I bought my daughter a C530 for her birthday, confident in the knowledge that the unit would be eligible for the free map update to 2008.

  • I had read posts from at least 3 other C530 owners who had received the update free
  • Posts from 12 other Garmin owners who had received free updates based on date of purchase
  • When I ordered my update for my Zumo, I even confirmed with the agent that the C530 would be eligible for one

However, I needed to wait for my daughters birthday so that she could register the unit with Garmin.
Well, she did, and then she asked for her map update. She was refused! Now they are saying that the C530 is not eligible, but with no clear explanation as to why.

  • It's a currently sold product.
  • It's new, not refurbished.
  • I bought it from an authorized retailer.
  • I purchased the unit new on 7/9/07

It boggles the mind.
I called and endured the 20 minute hold time, to speak with an agent myself. I was told that the information given to my daughter was correct. They said the C530 is NOT eligible for the free update.
I asked to speak with a supervisor or manager, and found myself back on hold. After about 5 minutes, the agent came back on the line and said that her manager had authorized a one-time exception for me, and that an update would be sent. She even gave me an order number.
Clearly, a well-defined, and published policy needs to be established for this process. The way it's being handled now is bush-league.

It appears from other postings on this site that the "official Garmin Policy" is that the c330, and the c530 for example were not included in the free updates. I believe that this is may be partially due to the limited memory allowing them to only load the lower 48 states. I believe I heard that they are supplying new c530's with the old maps, so, theoretically an update is not available to bring your unit up to the standard of a new unit purchased. Given this, I wonder how much longer they are going to sell and support these units.
So, with a friendly tech and or enough persistance, they may provide the free upgrade, but it is not policy.

.

You'll get better results by calling. However, only those people who bought their units after the release of the map update are eligible for the update for free. Otherwise, you will need to pay for it.

How do you determine what map version you have?

I've been reading the posts on upgrading to latest map versions. Seems that is North America NT 2008. Being new to GPS, I haven;t figured out how to check what map version I have currently installed on my unit. Can anyone please enlighten a newbie?

Thanks.

BTW...I have a Garmin 680

Hi BobbyL,

We all started out as "newbies" at one time.
To answer your question, from the main screen touch the "Wrench" icon. Then press the "Map" icon on the next screen. Then at the bottom of that page press "Map Info.

Got the update for FREE

After purchasing the c330, I registered the unit online and did all of the updates. After that I called Garmin and expressed my displeasure about having old maps (April '06). At first the CS rep was going to offer it for a one-time price price of $45. After stating that I will return it and get the next model up...the CS rep said let me check with my manager and see if I can ship it to you free!

IT WORKED....The new North America 2008 DVD is on the way for FREE!

The one selling in Amazon comes with new maps?

Hello,

I am planning to buy Garmin Nuvi 350 at amazon.com in the next couple of days. From the amazon webpage, it says that 'Preloaded with City Navigator NT V.8 with maps of U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico'. So I wonder is this new maps? or should I buy and call them asking for map updates?

Thanks in advance for your help

-Bradman

NT v.8 is the OLD MAP

This is confusing but the way I understand it; the old map is NT V.8; the new maps instead of being called V.9 is being called 2008! (IF I AM WRONG, SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME!)

I bought a Nuvi 660 from Sams club that had version 8 on it and returned it and replaced it with the Nuvi 680 with pre-installed 2008 maps.

I bought my new unit from PCNation.com. They were great and had overnight shipping for $11.
They are a big Garmin seller and on their web site will tell you that it has the 2008 maps on the unit.
I would highly recommend them to anyone. (BTW I also bought the 3 year Mack Warranty from them)
Good luck, I would personally just buy the new unit with the 2008 Maps installed and not go through the hassle of having to call Garmin and install it yourself!

Thanks Amesur.

Thanks Amesur.

Checked mygarmin for free map upgrade

I bought my nuvi 660 in late May. After reading several POI Factory posts regarding a free map upgrade, I wrote to customer suppport. They told me to wait until August, and try them again. Today I went to mygarmin, and checked the map update link. There was a link to order the update FREE!

Thanks Garmin!!!

2008 map update

Called Garmin today(wait time 15 min)
Spoke with nice CSR who told me to go to their website. Update requests are now online and free, sent to those who qualify(90 days). Here's how he told me to do it:
Go to MyGarmin, create an account, complete Product Registration with serial # with Registration code(yellow slip of paper that came in the box), go to map update, request DVD to be sent.
It worked and I am awaiting my DVD.

You lucked out.Garmin Tech.

You lucked out.Garmin Tech. support 2 of them no more free upgrades on N/Amap 2008.Real ticks me off.If I was to call again you got to wait at least 20-45min.I could be doing other things than spending a lot of time on the phone plus don't even know if your going to get it free or not.Something is wrong here? One time they give you a cut off date of no more freebe's.Then they been giving some for free, then they will give it to you half price then back to free.I'm linking this to the Garmin rep. I emailed 3 times(Patricia F.See What she says.Life is not fair.

Garmin Upgrade

I've got 2 Nuvi 360 units. One is 3-4 months old, the other is 5. Will I need to obtain or purchase seperate upgrade discs for each unit, or will one upgrade service both units?

Yes, the new Garmin policy is one usage for each GPSr. In the past, you were allowed two.

Garmin 530 update from version V8 To 2008

I must be getting hold of the wrong guy as this is my email response from them.

Dear David
Thank you for contacting Garmin International,

Unfortunately we don't upgrade that units mapping for free because it isn't ever going to ship from our facility with the new maps on it. Sorry for the inconvenience and let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

No free upgrade for me....

Well I've tried twice, once with an email and once on the phone. Got turned down twice. They said the new maps were too large for the Streetpilot c330. You can either fit the United States or just Canada on it. With the phone representative, he offered it for only 35 bucks. haha am I being too cheap or should I just have jumped on it?

It just frustrates me. I just had bought my Streetpilot 2 weeks ago, August 11th to be exact. I thought I would be guaranteed a free update. Oh well, its frustrating.

.

Unfortunately, as has been reported here, the 330 is officially on the "no free update" list. Those who have gotten it have done so by the Garmin support people going outside the normal procedures. So no guarantees but you might have luck if you keep trying.

^ I agree with you. I'll

^ I agree with you. I'll keep pushing my luck. I sent them another email for the hell of it. I think it's better to just email than to call. I don't have the patience to stay on the line again.

C330 2008 Map Update

Called Garmin twice. First call was 1/2 price, Not good enough! Second call, Was offered the 1/2 price deal again and I said, "My wife wasn't to thrilled about me buying the unit in the first place, and she won't let me spend any more money. I think I'll just return it", The Rep said, " I'm not supposed to do this but, I'm going to send you the DVD for free. Said I would get it in 5-7 days.

New Map???

I bought my Garmin 660 on June 16, 2007. After reading through all the information and the dates of when the new map came out (July 2007), I am a little confused.

I hit settings>>>map>>>>map Info>>>>>

It says the following

City Navigator North America NT 2008

[1] ALL

I am assuming this is the current version but the unit shipped June 5th???

Any ideas??? Do I have the current version???

YES

Free Upgrade

Boy did i screw up,after jumping the gun and buying the map upgrade from provantage for 53.00 plus tax.I logged on to gamin and there it was free upgrade for nuvi 660 ser#---.And to top it off i cannot get a refund from provantage, momma said there be days like this.

upgrade

I actually bought my Nuvi 680 in May and called them in August regarding the upgrade. The rep was very helpful and sent it out immediatelly once I gave him my serial number. I already have the DVD upgrade disk.

Garmin City Navigator North America NT V 2008 Upgrade

Yes it's true, I purchased my 2720 in May of this year, read about the free upgrade, contacted Garmin support and was sent the new disk and unlock code via UPS. I don't think that the staff at Garmin support is as knowledgable as they could be but as long as they are offering free updates I'm happy.

I have loaded alot of custom POI's on my 2720, is there any way to load and manage them in MapSource or is there another way to change icons ect from my computer? My Custom POI's do not show up in My Locations, everything that I have read says that they should be there, however they are in Extras and I can move them one by one to Favorites and edit them. I want to be able to edit them from my computer, is this possible?

FINALLY!

I'm so happy! I had bought my Streetpilot back in August. After 3 failed attempts with the emails I sent out in late August, I decided to give it one more go in September and basically told them about how fed up I was about the run-around they've been giving me with the various answers and info about this v2008 update. This rep who replied to my 4th email finally understood the drama and had ordered me one at no cost....

Now it's just a waiting game for it to arrive... Would of been nice to have had it a week earlier so I could of used it for my Las Vegas trip.

If you convert your Custom POI files to GPX files, you can open them in MapSource.

POI Edit will convert between CSV and GPX.

Then you will have to reload them to your GPS unit.
