Garmin City Navigator North America NT v 2008 Upgrade Free from Garmin

I just spoke with Garmin Support. He told me straight out, if you buy a new unit now that has the old v8 maps, within 60 days of the release, Garmin WILL send you the new 2008 maps for FREE. You just need to give them a call. Not in stock now, but he said the policy and the DVD's will be in place near the end of July.
Great news from Garmin. Way to go!

.

It really depends upon the area(s) in which you travel.

You can use the MapViewer on the MapSource page on Garmin's website to view the maps and see if there are changing in the areas in which are are interested.

And you don't have to pay $80. You can get it for under $60 at Provantage.

garmin map updates

hi have just sent garmin a email - i think there wrong for changing there policy for maps - these units are expensive and to pay 69.99 for a update when they used to tell you that the maps are upgradeable for free is the wrong way to do business

.

The only change that Garmin made to their policy is only allowing the maps to be unlocked to a single GPS unit instead of two.

They changed their policy because of Navteq's licensing requirements. Navteq provides the map data to Garmin.

I don't believe that Garmin has ever stated that the maps are upgradeable for free. Garmin's policy has been that if you purchased your unit with the old maps AFTER the new map version is released then you are eligible for a free update to the maps. This policy hasn't changed.

Well, technically, there

Well, technically, there wasn't a 2007, rather version 8 (I think). Anyways, I guess it really depends where you live or where you want to go. There are two major shopping malls that now appear in 2008 around my area. I have also noticed that DC has been updated as well.

I am going to upgrade every two years i think, unless i have extra money to burn, which rarely happens.

I am still debating what to do next year.

I actually have THREE garmin units. That adds up to $225 to do an update every year. I am thinking I may wait it out for two years before I do an upgrade.... or.... only do the unit we use the most each year.

Geez.... for what it costs in upgrades each year for three units.... I can buy a brand new GPS with the newest map already installed.

no freebees

Its all about money.I tried to get update on my old C330 awhile back when I bought it.Garmin said no freebees, while most everyone was getting the free update for their C330.

When I bought my Nuvi 660 in

When I bought my Nuvi 660 in December of 2007 I factored in the fact that I would, I thought, get a free map upgrade. That made it worth doing so I gave my C330 to my son. Now I find that I am not eligible for a free update. Oh well. I have no idea where I got the idea that the time period was a year. This is what I found on the Garmin website.

Question: What does “Free Map Update Expires on X date” mean?
Answer:

If you are eligible for a free map update, you will be given 30 days from the date you register your product to order the free map update. If you do not order the free map update within 30 days of registering your product, you may still purchase the map update.
