Where to find old messages

Today I started up my Nuvi 2699 after having updated some POI files. On the top line it indicated I had a new message, so I clicked on the envelope. So it showed I had one new and one old message. The new message was about new voice files. I clicked on the message and read it. Then I hit the back button and now I had two old messages. Nothing unexpected here. Now I hit the return button to get back to the main screen. Now the envelope symbol is gone. Now I wanted to reread that message. But I can't find a way to get to the messages again.
I'm hoping somebody here at the factory has figured it out.
Another question is: How do these messages get to the device?

Thank you for the quick response.
That explains the mystery. I have always thought of the GPS as a stand-alone device, but with connection to the SmartLink app on the iPhone, that is of course no longer true.
My other mystery is how charlesd45 and others on this site can know so much or where to find the information.
