Nuvi 1390T auto-zoom issue

My Nuvi 1390T has developed an annoying issue with the zoom function. Auto-zoom seems to be working fine when the unit is routing, but in the non-routing mode it will randomly zoom way out. I can manually zoom it back in to a reasonable scale, but in a short time it will have zoomed back out again. Does not seem to be speed related, more random - but then again it doesn't seem to mess up when running unmoving at the kitchen table.

Any ideas?

I've had that problem with other units. With the unit on, press, (or slide) the power switch to off and hold it till the unit reboots, then release. This should cure it.

reset?

That's a reset, isn't it? Will I lose anything like my stored destinations or POI's?

No.

What phranc describes is not a master reset. It is a "power" reset on some models (not sure if it is on a 1390 tho) which means it takes your unit out of sleep or standby mode and does a full power on bootup. It is sort of like doing a full shut down and reboot on a computer, rather than just restarting it from sleep or hibernate mode. You will not lose anything by trying this procedure.

These shouldn't affect those. Clearing user info and going back to default is.a different routine.

Reboot

I'd call it a reboot rather than a reset. No stored info should be lost with a reboot. A hard reset may well lose some data and if your problem persists after the reboot, you may need to try it. If so, follow the precautions to be able restore lost info:

Garmin Express also has the ability to backup Favorites before performing a hard reset.

well ...

there you have it ... 3 of us saying the same thing in different ways smile

My 1390T does the same thing. But, I find that if I reduce my speed to just under 70 km/hr it will automatically zoom in and stay there. If I get on the freeway and speed up to over 70 km/hr it will automatically zoom out again.

I'll give it a try and report

jackrabbit000, I think what you are seeing is normal autozoom. In my case it just randomly goes to 'way out' - perhaps 30 miles across the screen.

I'll give the soft reset a try and see what happens. Thanks.

Just to be exact

Just to be exact, the room points are at 59 mph and 45 mph. At 59 mph the map will zoom out to the last zoom out setting you had, when you were above that speed. At 45mph, the map will zoom back in to the last, or default, level.

On older models, the zoom out default was at 1.2 miles, and the zoom in was 800 ft. On later models, (the first one I noticed was a 2555) the default zoom out level .8 miles, and the zoom in was .2 miles.

The way zoom works, after a forced reset as I described above, your unit will default to the 800 ft and .8 mile levels. After going over 59mph (95kph) you can increase the zoom out level to decrease the detail and get a far enough look ahead for an overview of the upcoming road. Lowing dow below 45 mph (72kph) will cause the unit to go back to the default zoom in level.

On newer models, while zoomed out, if you go to the Menu screen while routing, the unit will default to the zoom in level and stay there. The unit will not zoom out again until you speed up greater than 59mph, (94kph) and zoom out again to the level you desire.

The older units will not be affected by going to the menu screen while zoomed out routing. Another difference between the older and newer units is that the older units will zoom in and out at speed, but the newer units will not, and remain at the default .2m setting.

You can convert the mph and distance setting to kilometers for your unit. The speeds and distances are set in the program internally to the default of the metric settings. So the mph settings are actually an estimate rounded, while the metric settings are the actual shift point in an exact number. 94 kh and 72 kph.

Hope this hasn't muddied the waters up too much. But the zoom out setting, at speed, is user set.

Just realized

I usually run in 3D mode. Just realized that when mine randomly zooms out, it drops out of 3D mode.

Most of my driving is around town, I don't think I've gotten anywhere near 59 MPH in weeks. And it certaily was not dropping back at 45.

Anyway, I did the soft reset, and will need to drive it a bit to see if it made any difference.

Free space?

Just out of curiosity, how much free space do you have in internal storage on your 1390? Do you have the map installed on a SD card or internal storage?

Map

Map is on an SD card. I've got 4.5GB free on the memory card and 1.48GB free on the internal memory.

So far so good

Haven't driven much, its been too cold and I like to stay warm. But on the few short trips I've taken, so far so good. Looks like the soft reset did the trick. Thanks.
