Mine is already set to manual

KenSny wrote:

On my Win 10 system, that Garmin parameter is already set to 'manual.' I didn't do it, so maybe GE does it if you choose not to have it run in BG?

Same...

Same with my setup, already 'Manual'. Just tested, GE does set the service Startup Type to 'Auto' when GE background setting is enable, and 'Manual' when disable.

Can I do anything with that file for my old 276C? It looks like they are not going to offer 2018.3 on MapUpdater, so far anyway.

No, the 276C predates junction view support.

As far as 2018.30 on Map Updater, I suspect Garmin will eventually enable it. But if I were you I would call them and ask them to. No need to tell them you have a 275C ... just say you have and old version of windows (like XP or Vista) that doesn't support Express.

MapUpdater Issues?

As far as I can tell Mapupdater is not working to download maps
It appears that 2018.30 disabled any hopes of downloading maps thus far.Perhaps others was able to use the Mapudater program.

My friend uses it on his XP machine and hasn't had any luck downloading using MapUpdater.

I already downloaded the the 2018.30 map AFTER I was forced to upgrade Garmin Express 5.0.1.0.on my Win 7 laptop and it installed.

As an experiment I attempted downloaded the 2018.30 map choosing install to computer only using MapUdater.
I received a message stating the 2013.10 was available to purchase and would not download even though it was already installed on my 2460LMT by Garmin Express.

I sure hope that Garmin will correct this for those that are dependent on MapUpdater to have their maps updated.

I don't blame Garmin for stopping support for older products. All technology companies come to a point where it's just not economical to devote resources to support older products that are at an end to their useful lives and no longer in widespread use. I think Garmin has done pretty well supporting their older products.

2013.3 on MU

I called Garmin and was told they are not going to put any more new maps on the Garmin Updater. 2013.2 was the last one. She said the new maps are too big for GU. They've been telling me that before tho, for years now.

Thanks for informing us regarding your call to Garmin.
It's possible sometimes calls to Garmin results with misinformation, only time will tell.

The fact is, if the files are too big for MU why can't split the map and put the remaining part on a SD card.

Let us know if you were able to download the large JCV file to your 1490. I have a 1450 with an SD card but have never had the large file get automatically downloaded with the new map. It's always been a separate step after someone posts the large file somewhere accessible.

Phil

The 765 dnld D1279330A.jcv with the update.
The 1490 dnld D3153250A.jcv with the update.
I put the 765 file in with the 1490 file and it fit on the 2GB internal memory with 823MB to spare. The 2.7+GB maps are on a 4GB SD card. I haven't road tested either the 765 or 1490 yet.
The question is on the 1490 should I:
delete the 1490 file?
leave them both there?
or delete the 1490 file and change the name of the 765 file to the name of the 1490 file?

The ...330A seems to fit naming convention but the ...250A does not.

The other option is using the posted 3060250A
Any ideas?

Delete.

Delete the the small D3153250A.jcv file that came on the 1490. Then check a test route using the D1279330A.jcv file you got with your 765T to make sure the junction views are showing up OK on the 1490.

The D3060250A.JCV file is the correct "large" 2018.30 file for the full NA map. I suspect the D1279330A.jcv you got on you 765T is for a smaller region like the Lower 49? Or perhaps for a different map version than 2018.30?

Am I understanding you right? You downloaded to the 2599 and then copied to the Dodge?

Does it actually work? As far as I know a downloaded map is only good on the registered Garmin. If so how did you do it? Wouldn't mind updating my cars Garmin based Nav unit.

I thought you never got that to work werewolf because of the map locking and copy protection? I know in the past Garmin had a way that you could get the unlock code from myGarmin, but I didn't think you were able to get that to work. Didn't you eventually use MapUpdater to update your 276C to 2018.20? If you actually were able to do it with Garmin Express for a different device and then manually apply the unlock code for your 276C, you should be able to do that again for 2018.30.

I returned the new gps the next day so I don’t have it anymore. I think i downloaded the 2018.2 using the new gps and GE, but now I’m not sure I didn’t use the map updater. I forgot. 2018.2 was on MU wasn’t it? Both my 276c and the new one had lifetime maps from Garmin, or what they call lifetime. Aslong as i get the map on to my computer i can select the portions of it i want and using Mapsource - or Basecamp which I haven’t bothered to learn much of - to my 276 no problem. If they eventually do put the new map on Mapsource i hope someone reports it here because i stopped checking.

Yep, it's true. I've not bothered to do the update yet. I suppose I might get around to it this weekend, but it's rather low on my list of priorities.

I found out recently that Mega removed its 500MB limit. Since tli has put his file on Mega there's no need for me to provide links. As for you tli, you're more than welcome to take over the task of providing the file, since you have something I don't: a device which can get the file.

Good news.

That is good news if Garmin has enabled 2018.30 for MapUdater. Why they seem to do this misinformation and "wait game" on every map update makes no sense to me though. My guess is that if they get enough calls and complaints, they eventually cave in and add the support. Another (more justfied) explanation I suppose might be that the old MapUpdater doesn't have as good of throttling mechanisms and puts too much of a strain on the servers. So maybe they wait until the demand lessens before they make the update available to MapUpdater. Anyway, I will be interested to hear from Werewolf if he is able to successfully update his old 276C.

2018.30 was the first time I used GE instead of MU to install a new map, and I can attest that install time was at least twice as fast with GE as compared with MU. Just sayin'.

Garmin Express downloads the files to your computer just once whereas MapUpdater must do a complete download (2.5 GB & more) each and everytime a unit is updated.

You are probably right my friend. It has been a couple of years since I tried MapUpdater, but I was thinking it had a check-box for "Leave files on computer" or something similar. And if you checked that, it would use the previously downloaded files for the second and subsequent devices and only download unique content for each additional device. But then ... I maybe just remember it wrong.

Garry, I have a Nuvi 1450 and both Garmen Express and MapUpdater put the map on the SD card. It's been that way for the last many versions. The large JCV file is in the unit itself in the JCV folder in the .system folder.

But Garmin used to have good tech support. At least it did in its early days. I guess a lot of big companies started like that. I remember once my Garmin model 2, I think it was, malfunctioned and I called - and they answered practically on the first ring - and the man said forgedaboudit don't bother to send it back, and then he sent me a brand new one, the latest model 2+ which was the first to have rudimentary maps on it - the earlier ones had no maps at all. You could just mark your spots (not very exact thanks to scrambling the gps signals). It was so cool to see the dots that showed towns and cities - that was it for the map - approaching on the little screen!

Anyway I've got the 2018.3 now. The whole process only took about ten minutes, but transferring the maps to my 276c took loger. In fact it's still at it. I have a fast connection here. That's another thing I remember, trying to download maps through a telephone connection. It took hours, and then the download would disconnect and I'd have to start all over again. Huge hassle...but the early maps were unlocked so you didn't have to bother with that, which was another huge hassle until they smoothed the process out, especially with the newer units and the GE, which I don't have.
