My speed range about 118/120

The speed test recommends that you connect your router to your laptop with an ethernet cable and not use wi-fi. Well, for me that's impossible. Using wi-fi, my results were

download: 53.65 Mbps
upload: 5.99 Mbps

How are you connected to get your speeds?

Vista-workaround

It also makes you wonder why Garmin doesn't check the OS version when updating GE. I understand not supporting the old OS's, but why force update Express to a version that won't run? Just leave the old version in place on these old Windows machines and let the users take their chances with the unsupported version.

Oh well, now that I have a workaround, I guess my best hope is that the Garmin tech's don't read about my solution and "fix" it! confused rolleyes

Could not agree more. I will try your workaround for my vista laptop soon.

If it's more than 5 years old, yes, you need a newer model. Browse their pages and see which one they are recommending.

Try http://speedof.me/ It's not java based and gives a more accurate speed. You could possible also need a new modem/router as protocols have changed for speeds 100mb and over.

Large JCV File

I have the large JCV file and have no idea how to upload it securely that only Poifactory members can access it. If anybody can direct me to how to do it I would like to upload it here at poifactory. Thanks

Thanks for Trying to Share!

I doubt POI Factory would host the file for sharing. Here's the procedure:

Partition the large JCV file into five segments (<200MB each), with WinZip or 7-zip, and then upload them to Zippyshare:

http://www.zippyshare.com/

Then post the five download links here.

If this procedure is too much, you can upload it to a cloud account like Google Drive, then PM me, or another knowledgeable member, with the link so that it could be accessed and posted onto a file-sharing site. FYI.

Uploaded to Google Drive

I have uploaded to my Google Drive and just need to share the file to any member who can post the file here.

Let us know if you were able to download the large JCV file to your 1490. I have a 1450 with an SD card but have never had the large file get automatically downloaded with the new map. It's always been a separate step after someone posts the large file somewhere accessible.

A couple of years ago Garmin

A couple of years ago Garmin used to provide a download link for those that wanted to substitute the full JCV file. I was curious about whether any of the old download links still work and I found that the link for the 2015.30 JCV file was still active. The download would be of little use for anyone now but check it out: http://download.garmin.com/support/2015_30/NA/JV/D3060160A.J...

I wonder why Garmin stopped providing this JCV download?

D3060250A.jcv download - be careful of ZippyShare links

WARNING!
First thank you so much to nandyesc and tli for posting the large 2018.30 jcv file. I have downloaded the four parts and combined them successfully. I have not updated my map yet and have not tested it, but the D3060250A.jcv file looks good.

BUT ZippyShare tried to download malware on my computer. It's not the fault of nandyesc or tli... it is with ZippyShare. Sometimes I clicked on the links posted by tli and the ZippyShare download page was correct and other times it tried to trick me into downloading malware. My anti-virus caught it (and I also sandbox my browser).

So when you click on the four links above you should go to a page similar to www75. zippyshare. com/ v/ DuymXJ8f/ file. html (each link is slightly different). Hover over the "download now" button and ensure the URL at the bottom of your browser is similar to www75. zippyshare. com/ v/ DuymXJ8f/ 975/ D3060250A.zip.002 (each link is slightly different).

Sometimes the "download now" button linked to p232207. inclk. com/ *** which tried to install a fake Adobe flash or my anti-virus detected malware and prevented the page from loading. I noticed this mostly when I ctrl-clicked on tli's links to open them in a new tab. I had better luck just clicking on the link and opening ZippyShare in the same tab.

So if you see anything totally different then the correct links above then close the page and try again. The files are there and good. ZippyShare itself is becoming questionable.

Thanks again for posting the file. Really appreciate you taking the time for those of us who need the file.

what's with the other crap it wants to install

First of all, thanks, tli, for putting this together. BUT what's with all of the other things zippyshare wants me to install, things like a Chrome music add-on or a movie add-on. I don't want them but how do I get past the request?
And then, I'm totally unfamiliar with zippyshare, so once I download all of the pieces, what do I do then to put them all together?

Thanks guys for posting the file but...

...be careful on what you download. Zippyshare does try to install some malware to your computer.

The download button to use is the top orange one that says Download Now with a circle and a down arrow inside it. DO NOT CLICK ON THE BLUE DOWNLOAD BUTTONS!

Plunder...unzip the first file and it will automatically piece all the files together into one complete file. Use 7-zip or Winzip or any other program you have.

Thanks Nandyesc & Tli

Life has been hectic lately for me, so it's good to know someone else came through with the JCV file.

I'll download it shortly and can give it a more permanent home on my Mega account, which has no malware that I know of, unlike Zippyshare.

P.S. Whoever recommended Zippyshare should be shot.

Great group of guys on this forum. tli - no worries, still worked out well, just had to be careful on what you click on and download from ZS.

Bottom line is, many thanks to all the guys who offer and post the large JCV for us guys who still need it.

JCV from ZS...

I did get a browser tab in the middle of downloading strongly encouraging me to update Adobe Flash. My Flash was already updated, and the tab for the phony site was deleted. I scanned all my downloads.

I appreciate everyones efforts on behalf of us unsupported, big JCV users as we slowly evolve a standard solution.

See, now this is what I get for posting prior to hitting the sack for the night - note the time of my post. A poster getting overly defensive because I pissed on Zippyshare. A poster who, had he bothered to check my profile, would have seen the last time I had posted, which was about two weeks ago.

Whatever. If your skin is this thin, methinks you should not be using the Internet.

I'll wait until Seapup's link has been deleted, and then post the JCV file for malware-free downloads. Until then, the one hour I have between the three jobs I have as well as taking care of the pair of invalids I have in my house is up. It's back to real life for me.

Ignore the negativity

til - You made a good attempt. You posted good files and they are downloadable. When 2018.20 came out there was not a working link on poi-factory to download the large JCV. I found it on another site and made reference to it in a post. I was accused of trying to subvert this forum and draw people away to another forum. LOL. I too was just trying to help those wanting the file. There is a lot of good information on poi-factory, but it is not a very inviting community at times... and no good deed goes unpunished. Just do what I did, ignore the static. Thanks again for posting.

Thanks

just finished re-building my PC and will be pulling down 2018.30 now.

Quickly done

I just installed 2018.30 on my Nuvi 1450 by using Garmin Express for the first time. Before that, all prior installs had been done via MapUpdater. Let me tell you, I was impressed with GE. It was simpler and much faster that MU, at least three times faster by my estimation. Very impressive. I had been turned off by the very early versions of GE and all of the grief it rained down and until now had stuck with MU. Well, as the Beatles once said, I'm a believer (or was that the Monkees? I forget.).

This was my experience too. MU kept producing a strange error, 'not eligible for this version', when I tried updating a 1350. Used GE and no error; updated quickly without any hiccup. After that success, went onto updating the 1390 and 1450 without any problem either. The UI of this latest version of GE (5.7.1.0) seems surprisingly well-behaved and very user-friendly.

The only nuisance is that GE installs a background service that auto-runs on startup, and is active all the time, lurking even when the settings are unchecked for:

[ ] Always keep Garmin Express running in the background.

[ ] Automatically launch Garmin Express when a Garmin device is connected.

Are you sure?

Jack..., very strange. Like tli, I chose not to have GE run in the BG; and in fact, the task manager doesn't show GE active. However, GE IS in the startup list so I'm not sure what to make of this dichotomy. As an aside, Win 10's startup list has moved from msconfig to the task manager.

IIRC, that was the behavior I observed a few years ago when I last tried GE. The current version does indeed start and stop its service in accordance with the selected settings to run in background. I stand corrected, thanks Phil. GE has transformed to be quite a pleasing and usable app nowadays--making this recent update quick and easy. Hopefully, they won't go fixing anything that's not broken...

Thanks jackrabbit000, but that's for the Startup Item called Garmin Express Tray, which also auto-starts on boot up, so to display the GE icon in the system tray. I already have this disabled so not to display the GE icon. There's a completely separate service, named Garmin Device Interaction Service, which could auto-run on startup and be initiated whenever GE is executed. This service could be started and stopped via the GE setting to run in background.

Modify service entry

Just go into Services and set Garmin Device Interaction Service from AUTO to MANUAL, GE will start it when it is run and when you reboot it will be MANUAL again and not running in the background.
