Garmin Drive 51LM: Editing & Reloading "Saved" POI's

I've extracted my 'Favorites' file from the old 255W, and now want to insert those POI's into the 'Saved' folder on the 51LM.

So far, I've managed to pull the 255W's "Favorites" from its GPX folder where it was named Current.gpx. I edited the POI's in Extra POI Editor and then saved the file.

I then took a copy of the edited file, renamed it Current.gpx and loaded it in the 51LM's GPX folder to replace its Current.gpx.

Problem: When I tap on the "Saved" category on the 51LM, none of those POI's I loaded show up--but I can see that the file in its GPX folder is a larger one than the original. I'm assuming that 'Saved' on the 51LM is the equivalent of 'Favorites' on the 255W and would like to have a situation on the 51LM where I can enter locations on the road, and have them available to edit in EPE...all while being able to develop new POI's in EPE and have them loaded into the units 'Saved' category.

I also loaded the edited 'Favorites' file in my custom POI's with POI Loader and I can access the info from there. However, it's a lot of keystrokes to access them in that way.

Can anybody supply wisdom on this issue?

Yep ...

Your problem is that you must name it anything but current.gpx

Name it temp.gpx for example. Then reboot your device and all will be well. Once your favourites show up go back and delete temp.gpx

Thanks...one final question...

Should I delete my current 'Current' file from the device and restore the original one to it before I add the temp?

Many thanks!

Allen

Nope ...

... provided you rename the original current.gpx from your old device to something else you can leave everything else as it is. What happens is that your device will merge temp.gpx into whatever data currently exists on your device, presumably nothing as it's a new device.

It then rewrites that data into the GPX folder as current.gpx, which is simply a one way copy of the actual data used by the device, held in memory inaccessible to the user. You can even delete current.gpx, it'll have no effect.

Incidentally you're using POIs in places where I think you mean favorites or saved places, since you're talking about current.gpx

If I'm wrong then the above may not be 100% applicable.

Unnecessary.

It is unnecessary to manually delete/restore the current.gpx file as it is an output-only file, recreated from the data stored in non-user accessible memory every time you connect your device to a computer. The purpose of current.gpx is to give programs like Garmin BaseCamp access to the data contained in the non-accessible storage.

Just for information

Another method that can be used both by BaseCamp and MapSource .

Bring BaseCamp up and click on Device and use the receive and send from device application.

Bring up MapSource and click on Transfer and use the receive and send from device application .

Both allow you to receive and transfer the favorites from the device.

The method outline in the previous posts is by far the easiest and fastest process to use.

Correct: I will clarify

Perhaps I should state my exact purpose and intentions. I was unsuccessful getting these POI's into my 'saved' file, so let me outline things so you can correct me where I'm going wrong.

1. I'm assuming that 'Saved' locations on the 50LM is the same thing as 'Favorites' on the 255W. You are correct that I'm referring to individual entries as POI's. I'm actually trying to add them to the file as created by Extra POI Editor.

2. I have used my 'Favorites' file for years (on the 255W) to enter locations in real time, often using prefixes in their names to categorize them so I can call them up as a group and compare their relative locations to me. (and secondarily, to access them while driving with only a few keystrokes--accessing the Custom POI section generally requires me to find a place to pull over)

3. The capability I'm seeking is to maintain a general file under 'Saved' which I can access easily, add to in the field, and back up/modify on the computer. Some of my activities make occasional reorganizing desirable, and that's very cumbersome on the GPS device.

4. In Windows 10.1 I'm using File Explorer to extract this 'Saved' category (which I believe to be named Current.gpx, and located in the device's GPX folder) open and edit it in Extra POI Editor, and then restore the modified file to the GPS device, again using Windows File Explorer. I'm returning it to the GPS under a filename other than 'Current' but admittedly have not used 'temp.' I wonder if the length of my filename could be an issue with this.

5. I'm not seeing a way to do this task via Garmin Express, POI Loader or BaseCamp. Thus my approach using File Explorer and Extra POI Editor.

Sussamb, you and the folks online at Garmin are saying I should be able to do this. I tried transferring the edited file to the GPX folder under a different name, but still no joy. I hope that this clarification gives a better indication of where I'm going wrong.

One step at a time

Can I suggest initially you don't bother with Extra POI Loader.

Copy the current.gpx file from your 255
Rename it temp.gpx and place it in the GPX folder on your 50LM
Reboot your nuvi

Do the locations now show?

'temp' worked, other filename didn't

When I changed the name of the file to 'temp' it did exactly as you said. Am wondering if the filename I was using had too many characters or some other naming flaw. Anyway, at least I know 'temp' is working. This unit is pure pleasure compared to the 255W it replaced.

Thanks for your help!

Allen

Now

Now that your Favorites are all installed, go back and delete that Temp.gpx file. This may well save you some grief in the future. As long as it remains on the device you may have a time deleting any Favorite that you don't need if it was orginally listed in the TEMP file as the GPS will just install it in the current.gpx everytime you boot the unit up.
