I remember reading in the Garmin software forums that they consider some updates to Garmin Express to be required, and no matter what options you choose, they will force the update to Express.
Although I am a loyal Garmin customer, some of their reasoning just baffles me.
That's exactly what I have. On either laptop I have to initiate the download, in fact one I have to actually download GE from Garmin since it freezes if I update from within GE.

Last Night when I did the 2 map 2018.20 updates (2689LMT & 660 via SD Card).... I did it on two different computers... 2689 (With GE 5.4.0.0) on one computer, 660 With GE 5.3.x.x) on other computer.... Both computers were W7-64...
The computer with 2689/GE 5.4.0.0 would not update maps until GE was updated.... in fact, it automatically started updating..
The computer with 660 SD CARD/GE 5.3.x.x updated maps to SD card without attempting to update GE First...
I manually updated GE to 5.4.1.0 after the 2018.20 maps were written to the SD Card so both would be the same....

I think this is the first time it has happened but I also got a forced update. The first giveaway was that the location of the GE icon on desktop had changed, confirmed when I opened GE.

Garmin Express doesn't offer map updates to a SD card for the nuvi 660 if the largest map available won't fit in the nuvi so how did you get this to happen? Also, the nuvi 660 can't read files greater than 2GB in size. Do you install a smaller map? Do you use the clone technique?
In "Administrative Tools/System Configuration/Services" Stop and Disable the Service: "Garmin Device Interaction Service"
Delete any item in "Administrative Tools/System Configuration/Startup" that pertains to Garmin.
Works for me on W7. Your mileage may vary.
They will all activate again the next time you run GE. I only run it at map update time.
Of course if you run GE it will auto update now anyhow. I think it did this the last time also. I can't see any reason to have this run and update all the time. Waste of resources.

The GE download schedule was set to "never" and changed by itself to "anytime."
