Slow Response to Typed Inputs

Sorry if this has been discussed, but most searches of "slow" seem to pertain to slow presentation of route, or slow zooming, etc.

I have 6 Garmin products (an old Steet Pilot I keep because I can hear it in noisy diesel trucks) and 4 Nuvis, and the NEWER ones (1300, 1490, and 3790) all seem to have gotten "lazy" with regard to taking inputs from the keyboard.

When I try to input addresses or other typed information, it often takes 2 or more seconds before the character I typed appears on the screen. Sometimes I assume I didn't properly hit the key, so re-tap it, and then I suddenly get a double of the character after a 2-3 second delay.

All other functions seem to operate fine and at reasonable speed. It is only displaying and accepting keyboard inputs that are v-e-r-y slow.

This makes data entry slow and tedious.

I have 2Gb micro SD cards w/ POIs in all (I don't store the POIs on the device memory, and have the latest software and map versions installed on all, yet the condition persists.

On the 1300, I noticed on the latest update, it said I need a larger SD card as the 2Gb could not hold the overflow, so I elected to only have the local regional maps. I will get a 4Gb SD and install it next, but somehow I doubt that's the problem.

Would the performance times improve with larger SD cards on all, or is this likely something else?

I know with my iPad and iPhone, I rendered them essentially useless by installing newer Apple software as directed by the maker. I've been told this is Apple's way for making users buy newer devices (by rendering their older ones useless). Is this what I am seeing w/ Garmin as well I wonder?

My old Garmins (Street Pilot 330 and early Garmin Nuvi) that I don't have lifetime maps and software updates for still are as fast as ever, maybe BECAUSE I never hooked them up to the Garmin online site for any updating?

Map Update?

Did this slow input behavior occur on your older units immediately after a recent map update?

How much memory is left on the unit itself? If it is nearly full, try deleting unused files like some of the foreign languages. DO A BACKUP FIRST!!. There is an FAQ available on how to do this.

I have several older units, 2 - 1490's and a 265 that still operate normally. I haven't loaded the 2018.1 map update yet though.

You can try a master reset and perhaps a screen calibration if available but it isn't likely the problem would occur on multiple units because of this.

I agree, a larger SD card probably won't help but I suppose it's worth a try. The 4GB SD's are pretty cheap these days and can always be reused.

predictive search?

Could it be the predictive search feature that most newer Garmin's have? As you type, the device starts searching the database for matches of the partially typed entry. I don't think the older devices used predictive search. They just waited until you had the entire item typed in and clicked Next or Done.

Hard reset

My 3790 does it too when used a lot. A hard reset after a map update clears it up.

My 1390T is the same.

Notice the same thing again on my 1390T. Time to retire it and get a Drivesmart 51 LMT-S

same thing on the 3597

The 3597 had slow response to typed inputs when new and it is still going on. For most of its life the map was on the device but now the map is split between the device and the 8 GB SD card. I agree that predictive search is using up processor power during data entry.

I am reluctant to do a hard reset since there is nothing else wrong. Is it possible that most members with the 3597 do not have slow response when typing? If so I will do the hard reset.

I have the same set up as you

maps are updated to 2018.1 and I am not having the problem with slow input. It never was blazing but it doesn't hang up...maybe something else is slowing yours down?

Zumo 660 same

I have the same problem on a Zumo 660. Just noticed that a couple days ago. I can type 3 or 4 digits ahead of what's displayed on the screen.

Typed inputs on my 3597

FWIW, I have my map set on my SD card & have never yet experienced any lagging whatsoever with the maps, typing nor in any other form.

Go for it dobs108, I'm confident the hard reset will fix this issue & after all the map and software updates done within the past, it's also highly recommended to do so smile

reset worked!

The hard reset fixed the problem. Characters appear instantly when typing.

Thanks to all the members who suggested a reset!
