Frisbee Golf Courses

As I said before I am new to this GPS and Garmin world (680). I am I have been playing Frisbee for over 25 years and I travel quite a bit to tournaments etc. The PDGA web site contains the coordinates of the courses and I was wondering if any one see the need for this or would like to help in creating this file?

Thank you

Sure. Makes sense to have

Sure. Makes sense to have an opt-out period.

...just as long as this is done before my next big cross-country drive.

just to keep this thread moving....

Any projected date of release for this guy?

(not trying to be pushy)

RE: Privacy...

Maybe I'm missing something, but aren't the coords already listed on PDGA.com for private courses? Regardless, if that was suddenly an issue to them maybe they could exclude those from their query so you could release a POI file with only public courses and then work something out with the private course owners later.

If anyone is up for it, it

If anyone is up for it, it is about 2267 different locations. They could be all found here. http://www.pdga.net/course/courses_by_state.php?admin=&Searc...

You don't even have to geocode them. They already listed their coordinates. It is just a big copy/paste project. grin

We would need to get permission to farm the data from that site.

Miss POI

CAUTION...

All,

Please be patient with this process...Most of the board is in Japan for the Japan Open..A few things..

1. The coordinates on the PDGA are WRONG for the most part..they are for the first tee and may cause a Garmin etc to have arrive to the closest point to that 1st tee which may be on a highway etc...I have even seen one course in a lake...So I and they do not want multiple files out there..I am working with them to understand that the coordinates are wrong on the site such as the KC course correction above or on the Disc golfers RUS web site indicated.

2. The Privacy caution was my concern...and my concern was the fact that now I am taking coordinates off a web site that people actually have to look up on a web site and now make them available for anyone to download directly to their PC and do whatever they want to besides using the file for what it was intended...That to me it is a big issue and I wanted to make sure they understood what it means to have this data out there and how these files can and will be manipulated for personal use.

I am still waiting on the conference call that was supposed to happen this week..I passed on the market research and have not heard back...but at this point if you are a member or not a memeber (of the PDGA) but are interested in this POI... I would ask that maybe you email the directory coordinator and ask about this project and how it is progressing..maybe that will move things along?

http://www.pdga.com/contact.php?a=sf&contact=Course%20Direct...

Thank you and I will really need allot of help once this get going to get this file QA and to adjust the coordinates from the 1st tee to the parking lots etc that is more appropriate for door to door directions! rolleyes

WOW thanks for the interest....It makes me think this is the right thing to do for more people than just disc golfers and I am just as frustrated with this process as you beleive me!!! surprised wink

At some point when I get a pdf converter I will post my RFI for all to see..

so many of those coordinates are not even near where the courses are. that is why this project is happening.

bumping this topic up.

Updates?

What happened?! No updates for 2 months? If you're not going to finish the project that's fine, but I hope you didn't piss off the PDGA to the point where they won't work with someone else.

Huh???

Well if you noticed the PDGA has had some big events recently (Japan and Worlds) and I really RESENT this accusation that I pissed them off...The RFI is still on the table and I expect them to follow through with it...No updates because I have no updates...if you want to get an update email the PDGA and tell them to get going don’t just assume that I dropped the ball and have given up..I am waiting as patiently as anyone on this...This is in the PDGA hands and not mine...I am ready to roll

Given that the PDGA site has been down for a while, I'm sure that our little GPS project is not on the priority list.

Suggestions

I don't have any good word on this yet...So may I make a few suggestions...

If any of you could take the state your living in and create a CSV file. This way we can get the ball rolling..Also maybe we can start getting a standard into the names...

So for examples:

Courses: Set the coordniates to the parking lot or general meeting area. Most coordinates are for the 1st tee which is no good for driving directions.

Calvert Road Park - DGC
Bayville - DGC

Clubs: I usually have set these to the courses that represent that area.

Club - Ann Arbor
Club - Mile High Disc Golf

Stores:
Retail - Dog Leg Discs
Retail - Wright Life

One of my thoughts to get the ball rolling and in the face of many people is to create a file for the upcoming World Championships in Kansas City...Resturants, Hotels Courses, and family fun..

Thoughts?

On a hike in Elysian Park I saw my first disc golf course..

I first saw the holes and thought the were some sort of trap... As I continued my hike I came across a couple of golfers looking for their disc in the tall grass... They said it was a rather difficult course because it's on the hillsides... Chavez Ridge DGC at Elysian, if any one is interested the website is:

I have started putting up a few test files..I did not want to post one here for fear that someone would actually use it to navigate...If you want a copy of the GPX and KML file please PM me and I will be happy to send you the link...again these files are in teh very early stages and hopefully I will get some input on more of the courses!

Bad info

Yes but the info on this file is wrong...The coordinates are for the 1st tee..and not for say the parking lot or park entrance..which means if the first tee is near a highway the unit will tell you to stop near there....or in the middle of the field/woods

Update

Just a quick update: I am trying a new avenue with the PDGA on this and maybe some of us old timers and a few favors that I can call in will help push the official PDGA GPS guide...

I cannot stress this enough..the coordinates on the PDGA site are for the 1st tees...in my recent trip to Seattle the Garmin had me in the middle of a housing project (not a good neighborhood!) and the first tee was over the fence on a side road...and this is the type of situation that I'd like to avoid..

Now for the Positive: Recent trips to Washington State and Oregon...the GPX file is working well and these two states are complete..

I am also working with the KC folks to get a Worlds tour guide done also...

Great but...

this is great and I loaded it on my Nuvi 770 the only question is my POI loader said I installed like 1,000 + (I loaded it on my SD card then popped it in my garmin after it then asked if i wanted to install 2 files and I did). But when I looked in my extras file there are only about 44 does it only show the ones closest to your current location or did the file not install all the way? Clarification would be appreciated if anyone knows. Great File again
Cheers

Not sure but...

I am not sure about your terchnical issues and I am sure these questions have been asked before with other files...you may want to check the FAQ sections...

CAUTION: The file you have uploaded is not verified nor correct for driving directions...the coordinates are for the first tee on teh course itself...so you may end up off the beaten path...

UPDATE: Hopefully during the Worlds this July I will sit down with the board and get things started again??

Not in CT

Nope not part of the New England crew although I see Toddy and crew once a year in Virginia!

I am arriving on Monday and I am not playing this year due to circumstances beyond my control but I will be hitting up the board members for this and pressing hard..in fact I will be printing out copies of the RFI to put in thier hands!!

I created a KML file for the Worlds and it looked great...I hope the board can look at this like an oppertunty and not let it slip past them!

Thanks

been awhile since i've been active. cause = broken GPS

So... again, let me know if I can be of any help.

First File Recieved!!!

What a long strange trip its been!!

Well we finally have an agreement signed and I just received the first file from the PDGA! 3000+ courses!

Here is the workflow that they would like to begin with! Anyone that wants to help - we need to do that from the PDGA web site and update the info there (they are going to start a large media blitz for this effort)

http://www.pdga.com/directory-help-wanted

Then periodically I will receive a file to create the POI or tour guide from some of the applications being tested and used here at the POI factory. This way the retailers, hotels and restaurants etc can be included in the tour guide as well as all the courses with updated 'driving' coordinates.

If you have any question please do not hesitate to PM me...any advice or help with the creation of the tour guide and management of the files is greatly appreciated!!

Update

All,

For those that have been following and waiting patiently I appreciate that! I have just received the second official file from the PDGA and I am looking for beta testers and coordinate ‘finders’ for the courses..I am going to be dividing up the courses state by state for folks to work through and send back. I am planning on hold a conference call in a week or two to work through the how and who of the project..just over 3000 courses world wide – North America will be the first priority to work through and then the EU and Asia maps next..
