Hasn't

Hasn't that poor thing given birth yet? It's been on the news here in Phoenix every night for at least a week now.

It can take a while I Heard..

Here are some interesting facts that can make watching April's experience a little more intriguing:

- Giraffes are pregnant for 15 months.

- At birth, the front hooves come out first followed by the snout.

- Giraffes give birth standing up, causing the calf to fall a few feet to the ground.

- Calves are six feet tall at birth and can weigh around 150lb.

- Once a giraffe's water breaks, there are few moments of pacing - then the front hooves begin to appear.

- A giraffe's birthing lasts on average 20-30 minutes.

- The giraffe will spend the first few minutes licking her calf clean and encouraging it to stand.

- Within 10 minutes the calf is able to stand and even walk.

- Within 30 minutes the calf is able to run.

- Calves nurse only from their mothers for about 4 months until they can begin eating solid foods (leaves).

Due date unknown

Read this

"According to Jordan Patch, owner of the Animal Adventure Park, there is no way to accurately determine April’s due date as they are not certain when she conceived. It is possible she conceived in October 2015, but even that timeline might be wrong. It was estimated that April should be about to deliver towards the end of February but since that didn’t happen, her due date has been delayed. There is no definable due date and there is nothing else that can be done to determine when April will go into labor besides giving her physical examinations and watching for labor signs. What is known, is that each day that April hasn’t given birth is one day closer to the day she delivers."

Still Waiting

WFLA News Channel 8 here in Tampa has been promoting this for weeks. Still waiting........

Close By

We live just 1.5 hours away. My wife and I are planning to drive up and see April after her calf is born.

Could it be???

Saw this on the Internet (you know it has to be true!) that April had only told her boyfriend that she was pregnant so that he would stick around. Now the whole world is watching and waiting and she can only pace back and forth in front of the camera.

Giraffe or new maps?

This thread is strangely reminiscent of those in anticipation of a new map release from Garmin. Any takers on which will come out first?

Thanks for this thread. My

Thanks for this thread. My wife loves giraffes. If it were up to her, we would have had a pet giraffe instead of our son.

I started watching yesterday

She started going into labor last night and I just knew it would be born before I work up. I got up about 6:30 am (early for me) and watch. I was amazed to see the feet sticking out. It took about two hours from when I started looking for the baby to get here. It was amazing.

San Diego Zoo Safari

Just came back from San Diego, CA where we drove up to San Diego Zoo Safari north of the city which is a huge African animal park where the animals roam the grounds. They had a new born giraffe nine days old and it was taller than me (5,11').
This is not the San Diego Zoo in the city.

I was raised on a dairy

I was raised on a dairy farm. I saw lots of things, including live births, and is where I learned about the birds and bees without asking a single question.

Giraffe Birth

Watched this live today with my wife and we caught the magic moment and we're hooked. It's truly amazing how these large animals are up and walking so quickly.

Finally!

A couple of the girls at work have had it up on their computer screens for at least a month now. We were debating if it was some kind of hoax. Here's a good story about a woman who decided to poke fun at the situation.

About Time!

About time. Glad everything went well.

Wow

I think they said it was 150 lbs and 6 feet tall!

Don't Mess with Mom

There was video yesterday where a Vet or Vet tech rubbed mom the wrog way so she kicked him a couple of times.

Very protective mom, which is nice. grin

Wonderful Experience

Watching was a great experience. Wonderful for young people to learn about life.

Does this really matter???

Does this really matter??? I'm sure there are enough utube videos that show what goes on. Just how much spare time do we have to watch this as it distracts us from other issues going on around us.
