Added SD Card when 2689LMT was new, and never used it...

Only because the 2689LMT had a SD Slot, and my 660 was already using the SD card for maps... I added a 16Gb card when the 2689LMT was purchased....
I've yet to use it for anything....

Question to others who ARE using SD slots.. (Other than you're out of space on internal memory)...

WHAT are you using the SD space on?

considering using it for something else.... Thanks!

Supp maps

I use a SD card for a supplemental map:

Other than that, SD cards will only be used by when Garmin map updates are too large.

I use it for

a slew of POI's. I don't keep them in the internal memory of the unit itself.

Agree ... Supplemental maps on SD card

Get a wide variety of supplemental "transparent" maps from this site:

https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53

"My Trails" is a great additional map to add to any GPS. Also like the transparent State County Map (which shows county boundaries and names for each state, which helps us while traveling.)

And I

And I use it just the opposite way. In order to keep as much space on the device as possible, which seems to speed up calculations, etc., I keep slew of POI's on the device and put the City Navigator NA maps on the SD card. JCV, DEM, 3D, maps stay on the unit however.

I use sd card

I load all my POI files on the SD. I hsve set up subdirectories for all my POI files to help manage my files.

Eventually, you will run of room for map updates. Since you have it, might as well use it. Investigate setting subdirectories for POIs.

I also use it for POI's..

I have quite a few of them and I don't want them in the internal memory.

ASR, SRX and JCV.

On my old 855 nuvi which is quite constrained on internal storage. I put the full CN NA map in internal storage and put the voice recognition (ASR and SRX) and Junction View (JCV) on SD card. I figured if somehow the SD card failed or came out and got lost, I would still have navigation. About the only time I use the 855 any more is if I use my wife's car. On my car and truck I have 3597 magnetic mounts permanently installed on the vents so I can just pop the 3597 in the mount when I go somewhere. I am still getting by without a SD card in the 3597, but free space is getting squeezed so sooner or later I will need one. When that happens, I will probably put the ASR, SRX, SID and JCV files on SD and leave the map in the internal storage.

Thank you all for the

Thank you all for the information!!!

I remember that prior to going to SD card on 660, I removed help and un-necessary files... And I've yet to do that on the 2689...

On the 660 I used the SD card for music as well, as the 660 played music, though it stepped on the audio files from POI's, and then returned to a different, random Music piece...

I know the 2689 doesn't support music, so I thought I'd ask....

Thanks again.

The SD card gives GE more space if it's needed

I've used an SD card in my 3597 for supplemental maps. I have topo maps, more detailed maps for remote areas and hiking trails. There is a topo overlay map for Colorado that works great in 3D mode.

During the last update, Garmin Express issued a notification and put some files on the SD card. There had been an issue in the prior update resulting in "orphan" files being on my device. If no SD card had been installed, the update would have failed. I reported the issue here and got great assistance in finding and fixing the problem and was able to use the new map during the process.

I'll keep an Sd card inserted whether I need it or not so that the map update process will not fail for lack of storage if something is wrong.
