How long to changes take to make it into a map update?

I was wondering how dated the map updates are by the time they're released.
Here in the Chicago area, we've had a lot of highways redesigned and re-routed in the last year or two, one of them being converted into a tollway (and at about $0.19 p/mile, the most expensive one in the state) that started collecting tolls in early July, though toll collection had been planned years earlier.
Still, the most recent updates don't yet see the new tollway as a tollway nearly seven months after toll collection began, and interchanges that were reopened in the summer still show with at least some of the old lanes and ramps. It thankfully has stopped telling me to "turn right at the light" when I'm on a bridge 40' above where the intersection used to be.
Ongoing Problem
I've been waiting more than 10 years to see some road changes show up on a map update in my area. Others show up relatively quickly. There does not seem to be any order in their method.
I've used the Here website to report some of these changes but most of the time they seem to be ignored.

It really varies
It really varies. Some of the prompt or delayed inclusions of new map data may be due to state/county/local governments and how quickly they offer updates to the map makers.
I've seen a few local changes (some major, some minor) that were included in the very next map update and read how others find updates that haven't made it to the map for multiple updates. This makes me think I live in an area with prompt updates offered to map makers by the respective transportation departments.
It varies
It would be interesting to know how maps are updated and where they get the information from. In Edmonton there were roads shown on the map (previous version) that were still under construction and not yet open for traffic. Speed limits, school zones seem to take a long time..

My advice?

My advice? Don't hold your breath.

Use the link provided by bdhsfz6 to check Map Creator. You don't have to register to look at the latest version of the map with things that are "down the pipe". Which road has become a toll in Chicago?
I've had updates show up
Just a couple of updates later and I've had some that have taken 2-3 years before they show up. It just depends. We had a new state route addition show up just as it was being completed, so I would think it is quicker when the government makes the changes. It seems as if it will show up quicker when the state or county update the roadways.

for a change to a local road with a cross road misplaced...I suspect they take care of mistakes on larger roads first...but 8 years is ridiculous.

IL-390
Which road has become a toll in Chicago?
The Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, and a piece of Thorndale Ave. have been redesignated as IL-390, and are now known as "The Elgin O'Hare Tollway."
Another fun part of the problem is it's not obvious where the avenue ends and the tollway begins, it's a rather unnoticeable transition. It's also an entirely unmanned tollway, with electronic collection being the only option aside from logging into the tollway website after the fact and trying to remember which collection arches you passed through. I believe they're looking to extend the tollway section all the way to the airport.

For what it's worth, Map Creator shows this road as a toll, although the name hasn't changed. I made a screenshot here

You can see under Road Attribute that "Toll Roads" is checked.
It this is new and was not on the 2018.10 map update, it should be on 2018.20 (I've noticed it takes "about 2 map cycles" for changes to appear from Map Creator to the maps we get for Garmin)
Some Take Time
I reported a discrepancy on my street (!) more than 5 years ago. Still no update. Vendors, delivery companies, contractors, and even a termite inspection company have missed the correct house here (and not just mine) because the map is off.
Not a big deal to me since I know where I live
but surprising that it takes so long.
Point addressing
The last time I saw anything reported from Garmin about point addressing, they said they covered 80% of US addresses with point (or door-to-door) addressing. Your location may unfortunately be in the 20% where they use logic (interpolated) addressing rather than point addressing. One would think that over time the coverage of locations with point addressing would go up, but I don't know that it has.
Edit: Oh, I should have mentioned that not all Garmin devices support point addressing. Older and low end units will always use logic addressing. See Charlie's FAQ: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42527

Point addressing is also
Point addressing is also dependent on the state and local GIS reporting. Until/unless the local GIS reports point addresses instead of address ranges, there will continue to be errors in routing. The big push to 911 addressing fixed a lot of those problems, but unless old range assigned addresses are changed to 911 sddressing, then those problem areas will remain.
Even on Google Maps and Here maps, address ranges will appear on some streets when you click on a road.

My experience has been great!
Back in July 2016, we moved into a brand new house, on a brand new court, in a brand new annex to an existing subdivision in a small Illinois town.
No subcontractors or delivery people could find our house as it was being built or when we moved in.
As the house was being completed, I notified both Google Maps and Garmin of the new street, in the new annex.
Google Maps made the change within a week. I was contacted via email within a few days by someone from Garmin, who directed me to a website where I could draw the extension of the existing road into the new addition, as well as add our court.
It took a couple of map releases, but everything showed up in the most recent map update, 2018.1.
I'm a happy camper.
Here's the procedure for submitting changes to Google Maps:
In the address bar, type www.maps.google.com and press Enter. Once the Google Maps window opens up, click SEND FEEDBACK from the bottom-right corner. Select what you want to do in the pop-up box. I actually was able to edited the map and submit my changes.
For Garmin, I used the following to report my new street, house, etc.
https://my.garmin.com/mapErrors/report.faces
Be specific as possible, list longitude and latitude, send pix, etc.
Was a bit hassled by the moderators on my submission, and had to do it twice.
That was six months ago, and everything appeared in the 2018.1 update.
Also submitted changes to Apple Maps ... but no changes have been made there, so we tell people to use Google Maps or the new Garmin 2018.1 maps to find our house.
Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.
I've said this before
The best way to correct errors for Garmin is not reporting to Garmin, it is correcting them yourself on HERE MapCreator.
Google maps also has something similar, so it's not necessary to go through all of these middlemen when you can just fix it yourself or get someone to fix it for you directly on the source.
