Possible orphaned files in ASR and SID folders?

sailornorm wrote:

Sorry to take so long to respond. gmapprom.img on SD card is 2,757,824kb. SD card also contains .gma and .unl files. Also JCV directory created containing one file. I checked storage on the GPS and most storage used within .system in ASR and SID directories and gmapdem and gmap3d files. Everything else is minor.

I had already removed unneeded voice files, etc. Only thing that might be considered unusual is that I have some supplemental maps installed on the SD card that have been there for at least a year.

On a 3597 North America GPS, in the .System/ASR folder there should be 4 .ASR files, 1 .SRX file and 1 or more .SRD files. In the .system/.SID folder there should be 4 .SID files. If you have more than that, you probably have some orphaned files that need to be deleted.

Aha, you beat me to it, alandb. I agree that with the 2018.10 map on the SD card, the nuvi now should have 2.5-3GB of free space rather than its 0.25GB and therefore the nuvi itself most likely has orphaned files. There was a discussion here a while ago with another user with suspiciously low free space and orphan files were the problem. I can't remember if we worked out the cause but it could have been a bad install, use of GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express, or maybe doing a map update via the clone method which left older .asr and other files. Of course, a large supplemental or older City Navigator map on the nuvi could be the culprit but sailornorm mentions only having a supplemental map on the SD card so I assume that the nuvi's storage has been checked for map files.

Sailornorm, I think it's worth looking for and removing large orphan files. We're here if you need help identifying the old files, just shout back.

space problem solved, hopefully

and aha right back at you guys. I found twice as many ASR, SRX and SID files as you say is appropriate. Half are dated 01/19/17, which I assume to be the date of the recent map install. Half are dated 11/09/16, which I assume to be the date of the next most recent map install. I recall that the previous map install was messy, requiring several restarts, with this slow internet connection I have. It took a few days and I had to force my pc to stay awake to do a successful install.

I've been careful to always keep supplemental maps on the SD card and have done nothing with them for more than a year. For some time, I've used GE to do all map updates in a standard fashion. Also, I used a great little utility called Treesize to analyze the Garmin internal storage by size so I'm fairly certain that there's nothing big hiding from me.

I've renamed the files dated 11/09/16 and all seems still ok with the Garmin. I'll use the device for awhile then delete the mentioned files. I assume I can then move the appropriate map files from the SD card to internal storage.

Thanks for the help.

Fast and Clean Install

Installed the new map using the current version of Garmin Express in approx 45 minutes from startup to completion. No issues noted or reported. It has come a long way...

After you delete the orphan files, you should have enough space for the map files in internal storage. If you move them to the .system folder (rather than /Map folder), make sure they are named gmapprom.*. They should go in the .system folder as that is where Garmin Express will expect them for the next map update.

Glad you were able to figure out what was using up your internal storage.

Piece o' cake

Once I resolved the large JCV issue, I installed 2018.10 to my old and slow 1450 with no issues. I'm on Win 7 and used MapUpdater as I always do. The only thing that I noticed was different was the download time. For some reason the download step itself took about a third of the time than it usually does. Using MapUpdater, the entire install process has been taking at least two hours to complete, but this time it took only about an hour. Don't know why; my physical environment hasn't changed. But on the other hand, I don't care either.

No map update for my C550

Hi my Garmin Express says that I have the most updated maps which is 2017.10 How come you guys are getting newer updates?

2018,10

2018.10 is the current version Brentr, so you are a full year behind. I assume you have a lifteime map subscription on your StreetPilot? On a device that old, you may want to try Garmin MapUpdater to see if it offers the new map.

Good question

Brentr wrote:

That's a good question especially since you've now missed three updates. I assume your C550 has lifetime updates. If Garmin Express doesn't work, you could look to GarminMapUpdater and see if it shows an available update:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39873

Two things to note:

1) The C550 can not read files bigger than 2GB so you'd need to split a map update between the C550 and a SD card (assuming the C550 can accept SD cards). Also, the C550 doesn't automatically offer map updates to a SD card so you will need to be sure to install the map update to your device and to your computer, then use MapInstall to install the portion of the map not in the C550 to the SD card. Since you've installed 2017.10, you probably already know this or have selected a "less than all of North America" map update option for your C550 with your recent map updates.

2) Remember that if a device with lifetime maps does not update a map in a 24 month period, the ability to perform future updates will be lost according to Garmin.

Yes I have a lifetime subscription. I tried Garmin mapupdater and the only option I got was different voice, which I added the english man's voice. My Garmin express still says that I have the most updated version software which is version 6.7. And yes I only have North America installed as I do not have enough memory.

My suggestion is to call Tech Support to see what's up, then to let us know how things turned out.

If you were offered a voice update, it sounds like you were running WebUpdater, not MapUpdater. GarminMapUpdater can be downloaded here: GarminMapUpdater for PC or GarminMapUpdater for Mac.

Incidentally, did you mean "US only" when you said NA only? Full NA is more than 2 GB, so I don't think you could put "NA only" in internal memory of your device. In fact, US only may not even fit anymore. It would be best to split your map putting part of it on SD card as CraigW suggested.

Which brings up another point regarding internal storage. How much free space is shown in your internal storage when you plug your Street Pilot into the computer? If you are short on free space, it is possible that the GarminDevice.xml file is not being correctly generated, and that could cause the problems you are seeing. If you have less than 100 MB of free space, try to delete some unneeded files, then reboot and connect to Express or Mapupdater again. Do a backup before you delete anything though.

You are Correct about the US Only map not fitting any longer. I have a 2455LMT and when I tried to update only the 49 states, it told me that I can not do that anymore.. Not enough Storage, and should use a SD card or break down the map to be able to fit.

However, on my 3597LMTHD, the full map still fits but running out of room for that soon too. I do have a SD card when I need it.

New 2018.10 update

3 day ago on my MS Surface Pro I got a notification that there were updates (didn't say which updates available) for my NU?VI 2598. I cleared the notification thinking I could at a later date use GarminMap Updater to update my unit.

Well this morning it was back. I didn't have much to do so I plugged my unit in and clicked on the notification and clicked on continue. 8 min later it said my 2598 was maps updated to 2018.10.I then tried it again and said to load the new maps to my Surface Pro3 and that took 10 min.

Because it only took a total of 18 min to update my 2598 and Surface Pro3 that my surface Pro3 must have pre-downloaded the maps to my Surface Pro3 the first time I got the notification.

I have never been able to update both in less of an hour.

PS It used Garmin Express

2018.10 Updates done

Update is done on both units, Nuvis 765T and 760.

Had minor issues with each. On the 765, I set the option to install to both device and computer, so that I can use the latest map update in Base Camp. As usual, got an error message about the computer files not installing correctly - yet the 2018.10 update does open and works fine in Base Camp, as far as I can tell.

On the 760, I had an issue I had not seen before. My PC has a 120GB SSD for the OS and programs, and a 1TB data drive. The SSD has 9GB of free space, but the install said that that was not enough to process the update! It did give an option to use the D drive with 900GB available, and worked fine with that option selected. I have no idea why a ~2GB update requires more than 4 times that much working space to install - anyone know?

C: drive space.

Garmin's reliance on using large amounts of space as workspace on the C: drive for map updates has been a frequent complaint. They do not offer a setting in their install software to use a different drive for workspace even though users in their own software forum have asked for it over and over again. I suspect they have no intention of fixing it, so we will just have to live with it.

The only reason I was able to do complete the install is that after checking memory, it DID offer to use the D: drive. Perhaps they have not announced it, but for that software forum, it seems a fix has been implemented - presented as the install is running, if the right conditions exist.
