Garmin Nuvi 3597 Custom Dashboard & Auto Zoom Disable

I recently set up a Garmin Nuvi 3597 for my mother in law and set up on for my sister in law yesterday. Anyway, that made me wonder what my fellow POI members are doing in this regard. If you have a Garmin Nuvi 3597:

-Do You Use The Custom Dashboard?

-If So, What Do You Select In Each Field?

-Do You Like And Use Auto Zoom Or Have You Disabled It?

For now, my selections are:

-Current Time

-Temperature

-Elevation

If nothing else, if it is displaying the temperature, that tells me that it is getting data from an HD radio station or via Blutooth, if that has been selected.

With regards to the Auto Zoom feature, I configured my Nuvi 3597 as either UK or Australia and it gives me the choice to disable it. Does anybody happen to know if the current US firmware gives the option for Auto Zoom Disable?

If that is currently a choice, I will switch back to the US mode. In the mode that I have selected currently, my speed limit signs are round, rather than rectangular. Not a huge deal and worth it to me if it is the only way to get Auto Zoom Disable.

my choices differ

I suppose by custom dashboard you mean the optional three fields of data displayed at the right of the display selected by the "trip data" option.

These fields are separately configurable for the case of currently navigating or not. As I nearly always have the unit guiding me, those options are more carefully selected by me:

Navigating:
1. via arrival
2. Turn in (amount of time)
3. Arrive in (amount of time)

Not navigating:
1. moving average (mph)
2. elevation
3. Time

The non-optional numeric field near the lower right corner is also configurable. I have selected:
Navigating:
1. Arrival (time of day)
Not navigating:
1. elevation

Hummm... that means I have elevation up twice when not navigating. I'll want to change that.

As to auto-zoom, I think it is well done on the 3597. I only occasionally find myself pushing the plus or minus button to second-guess it. While some considerably older Garmin units had really dumb auto-zoom, I think one is passing up an excellent feature in disabling it on this unit, and also incurring driving distraction risk. Time spent pushing the zoom buttons would be better spent seeing traffic conditions and avoiding conflicts.

No Auto Zoom enable/disable for US users

US firmware (AFAIK) does NOT give the option to enable/disable Auto Zoom. For some reason, Garmin thinks US users have no need to disable Auto Zoom. rolleyes

If you want to disable the

If you want to disable the "Speed" Zoom, just touch the menu arrow on the main screen while routing at a speed over 60mph. When you go back to View Map, it will come back at the .2mi level and stay there, only zooming in to make turns.

To return to "Speed" zoom, zoom out while at a speed over 60mph, and the zoom will always go back to that level whenever the speed increases, while routing.

I use level 1.2mi while routing. It give a good overview of where you are going and allows you to see route changes as they come up. This kind of behavior started back with the introduction of the 2555, or thereabouts. units like the old 330 and 760 series would zoom in and out whether or not routing, and going to the menu screen while zoomed out had no effect on the zoom level settings.

At times your comment made me laugh. Yet, very informative and educational. I will be putting your suggestions to good use.

Garmin Nuvi 3597 Custom Dashboard & Auto Zoom Disable

I updated the maps in my mother in law's Garmin Nuvi 3597 this week and I happened to think that the Custom Dashboard feature hasn't been discussed much here lately. There might be a whole new crop of GPS owners, some of which are members here, that don't know about this. Or, for that matter, there might even be some that don't know about deleting unused languages and other things to free us more memory on the device.

Below is a URL to a more detailed discussion of this.

http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/28412/how-to-customiz...

No need

No need to go to another site to see the details of the Custom Dashboard for the 3597. Those procedures are posted here at POI-Factory in our FAQ section. See:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41428

In addition please note that these procedures are also applicible to many of the Garmin GPS models newer than the 3597, including the new Drive models. They will work with basically any model that has the Trip Data application.

Auto Zoom Disable

Does anybody here happen to know if Auto Zoom Disable is still unavailable on the US software?

It's now a setting

The Drive and possibly, newer Nuvi models, have auto zoom enable/disable as a setting:

Settings > Map & Vehicle > Auto Zoom.

The default is Auto Zoom enabled. Tap the check box in the Auto Zoom setting to disable auto zoom. There is no longer a need to fool around with device locale in order to get this option

Garmin Nuvi 3597 Custom Dashboard & Auto Zoom Disable

Thank you for the reply. I did find that at the on-line support area of the Garmin webpage. I have a non-North American area selected, which means my speed limit icon is a circle!

Support
Disabling the Auto Zoom feature on Garmin devices
By default your device will automatically adjust the zoom scale of the map as you drive. This is done to provide the clearest map image possible while driving. It is not possible to disable this feature on North American versions of your device.

European versions of this model do include the ability to disable Auto Zoom.

To enable or disable Auto Zoom:

Touch Settings
Touch Map and Vehicle
Touch Auto Zoom to check (enable) or uncheck (disable) it
Repeat the above steps as desired.

I couldn't

I couldn't remember if you could disable auto zoom in Settings on the 3597 or not (my 3597 is stored in my vehicle as a backup these days). Anyway, the Drive models do have the Settings to turn Auto Zoom off and on as I posted earlier.

As I think you have already figured out, if you set your 3597 to a locale of Australia or UK then the speed limit icon turns into the Europe circle from the NA rectangle but this also gives you the ability of turning Auto Zoom off and on.
