Format and naming conventions for speed zone alerts POI's

Trying to follow numerous instructions that seem to contradict.. or in any case not working for me. I am trying to get notifications for school zones in Edmonton Ab. I understand (?) that some folder names automatically assign alarms / notification but so far all I get are icons on my map. I was under the impression that naming it Redlight would automatically assign properties to it. When loaded into my Garmin I get small blue icons (small circle) but that is all

In Excel
A:-113.3988681 B:53.46052971 C:Bisset (3020 - 37 Street NW)

Do I need more columns..Do I need to specify a column with speed xxx@30

Then what do I name my file, currently Redlight.csv. When loading it into my Garmin 2689 I am asked for a file name.. what should that be?

Any help / advice appreciated..

School zones have speed cameras

I assume you are loading the file Speed-Cameras.csv because school zones have speed cameras. Or are you writing your own speed camera file?

This is a speed camera file, not a red light camera file. I recommend that you also load Redlight-Cameras.csv because in Canada, there are many combination speed/red light cameras.

If you open a POI Factory file in Excel or Notepad, make sure you don't save changes. Alternately, download the file again and load it without opening the file at all to make sure you haven't added a space or character to the file.

Load all custom POI files into a Garmin GPS with POI Loader software.

Take a look at this FAQ, which is written to be as simple as possible, on loading red light and speed cameras using Garmin POI Loader:

Start out with no icons or audio just to make sure the proximity alerts actually work. Add the icons and audio alerts later. Check back here and a number of members will answer questions!

Another way

Ralph, if you don't want to tinker with the file internals of a POI csv or gpx file, you could use this TourGuide method (not as good as a tinkered file but easier in some respects):

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42419

Just substitute your file in place of the FAQ's schools (US) file.

Thank you dobs108 I am

Thank you dobs108 I am making my own POI using Excel. I have found a database used by an Edmonton App that lists all the coordinates of the elementary schools and am semi manually adding them to my POI. I figured (??) that by using a redlight approach I would get a proximity warning. But.. so far my efforts have failed, I get an icon.. and when I click on it it shows the area covered.. but no alarm.
But.. as this is all new open to all suggestions.

Thanks again.. and appologies for my spelling.. there seems to be no spell checker on my Samsung Tablet..

POI Loader will automatically enable alerts for your file if the file name contains any of these keywords: GATSO, mobile, SPECS, safety, speed, redlight, or camera. Just make sure your file name includes a keyword before you run POI Loader.

For example, if your source file is named "Edmonton school safety.csv", POI Loader will automatically setup an alert.

Just including a keyword in the file name is enough to enable alerts. But if you'd like to include specific speeds for individual locations, you can include a speed value using the @ tag.

For example:
-113.3988681,53.46052971,Bisset (3020 - 37 Street NW)@30

This line would specify an alert speed of 30 for the Bisset location.

But again, speed tags are optional if you're using a file name keyword like "speed" or "safety".

Your current filename ("Redlight.csv") should be enough to enable alerts because "redlight" is one of the keywords POI Loader looks for as it's reading files.

What POI Loader is asking for is a name to use when it saves the POI information to your GPS. From an alert standpoint, this name doesn't matter. What does matter is the name of your original POI file that POI Loader is reading from your computer (e.g., Redlight.csv).

-- Bottom line --

For clarity, I'd recommend naming your source file something like "Edmonton school safety.csv", and then run POI Loader again to transfer it to your GPS.

On the GPS, the locations will show as dots on the map; and you should get proximity alerts because your file name includes the "safety" keyword.

Thank you for your detailed

Thank you for your detailed response. Much appreciated.
