Voice Command vs Voice Control

The manual for my nuvi 2789 talks about both Voice Command and Voice Control capability. I'm not sure that I understand the difference. The manual reads like Voice Command is menu driven, i.e., you speak words that are on a menu. On the other hand, when using Voice Control you must first teach the nuvi by speaking and recording the commands you plan on using.

Is that a correct interpretation? If so, when would you ever use Voice Control, when Voice Command seems so much easier?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand.

Voice command

As far as I know, there is no "learning mode" on the Garmin speech recognition feature, other than it learning the wakeup phrase on the newer models. The old 8xx series was button controlled and didn't even have a wakeup phrase.

Something new

I agree with you, Durango, that the manual differentiates between the two, and I also agree that it's not at all clear to me what the Voice Control is. The Voice Command sounds like what earlier models (3597) use.

Yes, my older 3790 had only Voice Command, which I understood and often used. But my new 2789 also has the Voice Control. I'm trying to understand exactly how to use it and whether it offers any advantage.

Has anyone tried it? Is it a useful capability?

Voice Control

Seems like a nice add-on. My Nuvi has Voice Command. I don't really use it unless the menu comes on, which it does without prompting and unpredictable times. I am not sure how to utilized it otherwise.

Since your profile shows that you own a 2789, I suggest you have your owners manual open to pages 9-10, then walk through the training and eventually, usage, of the Control. Then report back to us with your results which will be of interest to many here.

I expect the lack of knowledgeable replies so far could be due to you being the only Factory member so far who actually owns a 2789 and has read the owners manual. rolleyes

The one thing that I do think I understand from pp 9-10 is that Voice Control seems to be designed for the GPS models that do not have Voice Command and that Voice Control can be a substitute. If my thinking is correct, Voice Control may offer nothing more (and quite likely less) than Voice Command and can be ignored if the GPS has Voice Command. Hmm, it's even possible that models with Voice Command may not even offer Voice Control. The tantalizing and potentially problematic part of Voice Control is that it states that it is customized to a particular individual's voice and that other individuals would not be able to control it by speaking to it.

I Think I Will Pass on Learning Voice Control

Craig, I was more curious than anything else as to what (if any) advantages Voice Control might offer. But pp 9-10 of the Owner's Manual are not exactly a training exercise....not much guidance there. So I think I will pass on your nomination for me to be the forum guinea pig. mrgreen
