Update for Larger Map Size available for the Nuvi

One indication that a map update may not be far off is that Garmin has released a device software update to handle larger map files better.

For my 3597 this is Version 5.40 and the only item in the change log is:

Added improvements for handling larger map files.

Not sure which devices have this update available but Garmin Express finds it for the 3597 and another member got it for his 2597. Check your unit using GE to confirm if it's available.

Thx

Just downloaded v.5.40 to my Nuvi 2797

I wonder ...

... exactly what this is?

It's been offered for mine as well except the older 13xx/14xx devices. If it's simply to deal with map files over the FAT32 4Gb limit then since modern devices can already handle multiple maps it really needs a change to Express to break the map into multiple files, rather than a change to device software?

Odd assortment.

It seems like kind of an odd assortment of devices that received this update. For example, nuvi's as old as 3490 (released 10/2011) and 3590 got it, but the newest Drive models didn't. None of the 2 digit nuvi models got it, none of the dezl's and zumo's got it. The nuvi 2xx5, 2xx7 and 2xx8 got the update, but not the 2xx0 or 2xx9 series. The RV 760 got it, but not the RV 660 (which is newer than the 760). I suppose it is possible that Garmin will be releasing this update on some more models in the days to come ... we will have to wait and see.

It's quite possible

@alandb
It's quite possible that the "Newer" Garmins already have code in the software that handles the larger maps that have yet to come.

Thought of that...

But then you would expect to see a block of devices based on release date that got the update ... and that doesn't fit with many holes and gaps...

I do wonder

I know curiosity killed a cat, but I still am wondering, after the next map update comes out, if we can sleuth what this update did that would not have occurred without the update. confused

Well,,,,,

Well, many Garmin devices will NOT hold a 2 Gb map without using an SD card. And even then, the map has to be split into 2 files (such as my Nuvi 660) on most, if not all, of the older models. I don't think that you would want to change the device's code if it won't hold a full map in the main memory.

It's just too bad that Garmin did not see far enough ahead to realize that the map size would break 2 Gb. Maybe it was an economic decision to not have more free memory on the main board. But they should have realized that their devices would be in use for many years - especially with lifetime maps.

We may see more software updates for more models in the future, but who knows.

Neither 2689LMT or 660

Show need for firmware update using Garmin Express V4.1.28.0 tonight!

Everything went smoothly. No issues using Garmin Express.

Agree.

I agree Craig. We may not be able to determine what this update is intended to do. It is possible that it is for the Europe map which is right at the 4 GB limit imposed by FAT32. I doubt if Garmin is intending to change from FAT32, so they may be coming up with some way to split out some of the map features (lane guidance, POIs, addressing, who knows what?) into a separate file in the Europe map so they can keep its size under 4GB. The NA map is still well within the 4 GB size limit, so this shouldn't be an issue in NA for quite some time.

I still find it odd that none of the 2 digit nuvi models, zumos or dezls got the update. I can see how Garmin might be preparing to "age out" some older devices, but some of these are still pretty new.

Another oddity.

Here is another oddity that I learned over at the GPS Review forum. There are apparently 2 different hardware versions of the nuvi 2xx7/2xx8 devices. One variation had software 5.30 and received update 5.40 for handling larger map files. The other variation of the 2xx7/2xx8 is referred to as "C4" (whatever that means...maybe something to do with camera options?) and is at software version 8.50 and didn't get the update.

Thanks. 8.30 for Nuvi 3590LMT

More models

As reported in another thread, a few more models received this update on Oct 18 to handle larger map files ... Nuvicam, Dezlcam, Dezl 570, Dezl 770, RV 660 ... maybe others? Still seems this update has not been applied to any of the 2 digit nuvi models, any zumo models or anything in the Drive series.
