Corrupt garmin img file after copy to SD card.

Hello all,

I have several img files which I want to put on a SD card (32GB) to use in my Oregon 600 Garmin device.

When I copy unlocked images (checked with Protected Garmin File Toolkit v.2.2.5.4) from my laptop to the Garmin folder on my SD card located in the memory card reader of the same laptop the copy ends successfully but the img file is not seen by the garmin device afterwards. Also the PGF Tool does say that it is not a Garmin Image file after the copy because the DSKIMG signature is missing.

What can I do to solve this problem?
Does anybody recognizes this?

Where ...

... are you getting these files from and what maps are they?

I believe this program helps pirate maps, in which case no one here will help you. If I'm wrong please explain more about what you're trying to do.

Oregon 600 supports uploading custom maps

The Oregon 600 supports uploading custom maps such as topo maps or any maps in the public domain. I do not have a trail Garmin, but a marine one.

Problem is placing img files on SD Card

I do not copy the img files to the Garmin device directly but to a SD card which is placed in the memory card holder in my laptop.

Source of img files is not the issue

I have the problem with all kind of img files.
From (legal) City Navigator Europe 2017.10 installed on my computer but also from OpenStreetMaps. The copies on the SD Card can not be read.

Legal ...

... As in a CN map purchased and locked to your Oregon?

Stick to the issue

Yes

Maybe this?

Yes

Given that you say your maps are legal, I found this on the web and wonder if it applies:

This tool [Protected Garmin File Toolkit], doesn't unlock new maps with signature verification in models with Map Signature Verification.

This link indicates that handheld Garmin models seem to have more problems with the verification than the vehicular models:

Regarding your Stick To The Issue issue, don't get your knickers in a twist. I expect that most of us here have never heard of Protected Garmin File Toolkit and in a Google search, I thought as sussamb did that this could be software use to pirate Garmin maps. We just wanted to hear you verify that your Garmin-made maps were properly obtained by you.

Good luck.

Toolkit

Here is a link to some forum website dealing with this "Toolkit"

None of it sounds very legal to me.
And some advice to this NEW 7 hour member as of today Aug 3rd at 1:54pm. It might be a good idea to sit back and be less antagonizing in your first posting !

Toolkit

I know the toolkit is illegal, but the only way for me to debug why the img files are not seen by the Garmin device.
I would like to know if you have a better way.

Yesterday I discovered that although the whole mapset is not recognized a small subset does work if I only send a selection of about 50 supmaps to the device.

Well ...

... There's no need to use illegal programs to determine what's going wrong.

If a small subset is working what maps do you have installed on your GPS? Your GPS is limited in numerous ways, one is the maximum number of map tiles, so depending on what maps are installed you may be going over that limit which is causing the issue.

How are you installing the maps to the SD card? Note the card must be formatted FAT32 and the map files in a folder called Garmin.

Map Tiles

I copy the img file to a Garmin folder on 32 GB SD card which is formatted to FAT32.
The img files which are working on my device don't give an error message in the used tool. The img which are not visible do trow an error in the tool (this is not a garmin img file as the signature is missing (DSKIMG)), while the source does not.

Could be related to map tiles off course, but from what I read is that it does not cause that the mapset does not show-up in the configuration list in the device only in the use of it.

Well ..

... what I'm not clear on is where are you copying this .img file from? And how did you get it?

If it's a Garmin file originally obtained legally for your Oregon it should come with the necessary unlock files, so there should be more than just the .img file. OSM maps that are img files should simply work.

Try loading one map at a time and see what happens. If at some point as you load more maps the issue re-occurs then I suspect it is the tile limit causing the issue.

2025

If it's a map tile number issue, I think it's still correct that the max number of tiles per map file is 2025. This was a problem with the old (and current, if it still exists?) US Topo Map.

Well ...

... there is an overall limit for all maps that is around 3500 to 4000 map tiles depending on which version of the Oregon 600 it is. Once you go over that nothing shows up.

Aha, things have changed from years ago when I had tried to create a map with too many tiles.

Yep ...

Solved

Hello all,

The problem is solved. I bought a new SD card copied everything to that card and all maps show up. Apparently the old SD card did have some bad sectors or something even after a format.

I find that the Sandisk

I find that the Sandisk brand are the most reliable SDcards.
