Download of new map problem

I have just downloaded a NA map/USA and Canada 2014.10 update on Life time update plan using Garmin map updater V3.1.13. The download /install appears to have gone well BUT.... On powering up the GPS I get a "cannot authenticate maps" notice. The map that displays shows my home (and Lat/Long) ok BUT no streets appear at all as they used to and it appears to be able to calculate directions to "favorites" stored, just no 'picture' of the streets.

Any idea what's going on?? Did I download the wrong map version and should have chosen perhaps the Full coverage version?? Help! and TIA

Not an answer, but

This is not an answer to the problem but I found this FAQ from Garmin of interest.

Why did my map product on my Garmin device stop working?
Answer:
If your map product stopped working right after you updated your device or application software and you see a message like “Can’t Unlock Maps” or “Can’t Authenticate Maps”, most likely your problem is due to the fact that the non-functioning map product came from an unlicensed map maker. To help you understand this situation better, we need to first explain some necessary background information.

There are countless legitimate map products in the market that are compatible with Garmin GPS devices. These legitimate map products are sold by Garmin itself and also sold by numerous authorized Garmin license-holders who use a licensed tool to create map products that are compatible with Garmin devices. There is also a third category of map products, which are those created and sold by third parties who are not licensed by Garmin to create maps for Garmin products. The non-functioning map product that you have was probably created by one of these unlicensed map makers.

Several years ago, in order to protect the copyrights and other intellectual property rights in many of the electronic maps that are used with Garmin products, Garmin introduced an “unlock code”. The unlock code binds a particular map product with a particular Garmin GPS device (the hardware product) so that the map product cannot be illegally copied from one Garmin device to another in violation of worldwide copyright laws. Unfortunately, despite such protection, certain software developers have come up with ways to “reverse engineer” the Garmin unlock code system, allowing these persons to generate their own illegitimate unlock codes. This then has allowed persons to unlawfully sell pirated copies of Garmin electronic mapping products and to produce similar mapping products, which are then sold for use with Garmin products and are “locked” using our own proprietary intellectual property.

Garmin obviously has a desire to prevent this type of infringement of its intellectual property rights. In order to prevent further abuse like that described above, Garmin recently developed a new layer of protection to make its unlock code protection even more robust. This new protection consists of a “signature” process, which enables a Garmin hardware device to verify whether an unlock code is indeed a genuine Garmin unlock code. An unintentional by-product of this new unlock code security measure is that certain unlicensed map products that rely on Garmin’s proprietary locking technology will no longer work on Garmin devices. Neither Garmin-created map products nor map products created by Garmin-licensed map makers will be affected by Garmin’s new security measures.

If you believe your map product has stopped working for other reasons, please feel free to contact Garmin by phone or email. Contact information for your local office is available at: http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/supportcont....

Try this also.

What should I do if my Garmin nuvi, LIVE, dezl, or zumo device displays the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" or "No Map Data Available?"

The "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" or "No Map Data Available" message may appear on your device for the following reasons:

The maps on the GPS device have been disabled
The GPS device is missing its unlock code
An unsuccessful map download attempt has written the mapping files incorrectly
If a microSD / SD card is being used and is in an improper format1

To determine the cause of the message, touch and hold your finger on the screen until the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" disappears.

If you see a "Can't Unlock Maps" message following this error, remove any microSD / SD cards in the device and follow the instructions below for "Retrieving Your Unlock Codes" followed by the instructions for "Creating an Unlock File."2

If you do not get the "Can't Unlock Maps" message then skip to the instructions for "Enabling Maps on the GPS Device."2

1When downloading information to a microSD / SD card, the card should be in FAT or FAT 32 format. For more details on formatting and instructions on how to format, please see the article How do I format a microSD/SD card?

2If you have a nuvi 2405, 2407, 2505, 2507, 2707, 3400, 3500, or 3507 series, zumo 350, or dezl 760 device, please contact product support instead of proceeding to the indicated section of the article.

Enabling maps on the GPS device:

Touch Tools (skip this step on some models)
Touch Settings
Touch Map or myMaps
Touch Map & Vehicle before this step on some models
Touch Info or Map Info (skip this step on some models)
Select the checkbox next to the maps to be enabled on the device3

3If this page is blank and you have recently attempted a map update, you may need to download the map again.

Retrieving Your Unlock Codes:

Log into your myGarmin account at http://my.garmin.com
Click on the myMaps tab
Click on the Details link next to your device
Locate the most current unlock code for your device underneath the Installed Maps heading

Creating an Unlock Code File for PC:

Connect your Garmin device to your computer with a data transfer USB cable
Double-Click on My Computer or Computer located on the Desktop or in your Start Menu
Right-Click on the Garmin drive
Click Explore
Double-Click on the Garmin folder
Right-Click in a blank space in this window
Move your mouse over the word New
Select Text Document
Press Enter / Return on your keyboard
Double-Click on the New Text Document. This will open the New Text Document in a window called Notepad
Type the unlock code that is listed in the Manage Maps section of your myGarmin account in all capital letters with no spaces or symbols
Select File
Select Save As
Change the Save As Type to All Files
Type gmapprom.unl in all lower-case letters for the File Name
Select Save
Close the Notepad window
Delete the file named New Text Document
Disconnect the GPS device from your computer

Creating an Unlock Code File for Mac:

Connect your Garmin device to your computer with a data transfer USB cable
Open the TextEdit application located in the Applications folder
Click Format
Select Make Plain Text
Type in the unlock code that you retrieved from your myGarmin account. The unlock code should be in all capital letters with no spaces or symbols
Click Save As and name the file: gmapprom.unl
Uncheck the box "If no extension is provided, use '.txt'
Save the file to your Desktop
Double-Click on the Garmin device icon that is mounted on the Desktop
Double-Click on the Garmin folder
Copy the gmapprom.unl file from the Desktop to the Garmin folder on your device

Those devices which are preloaded with transatlantic (North America and Europe) mapping will need to follow the Creating an Unlock Code File instructions above for the North America mapping and then create another unlock file for their European maps. The European unlock code file should be named gmapprom1.unl.

If your device is a nuvi 30, 40, 50, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1690, 2200, 2300, 2400, 3700 series, LIVE 1695, LIVE 2300 series, zumo 220, 665 or dezl 560 device, then the gmapprom.unl file is required to be placed in the ".System" folder instead of the Garmin folder. The ".System" folder is a hidden folder in the Garmin drive. To access the hidden ".System" folder, please follow the steps below:

On Windows:

Click the Start Button
Select Help and Support
In the Search box type "Hidden" without the quotes
Select the result with instructions on displaying or showing hidden files or folders

On a Mac:

Double-click on the GARMIN device icon on the desktop to open
Click the "Go" menu option at the top of your screen in the menu bar
Click "Go to folder..."
Type ".system" (without the quotes and in lower case letters)
Press OK

The .system folder will now be present in the folder list.

If you continue to receive the "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" message after completing these steps, please contact Garmin Support.

Another thought

simplesimon, you've received a couple suggestions already and if they don't help, here are my thoughts:

Some questions first. Your profile states that you have a nuvi 350. Is this the device you're trying to update or do you have a newer nuvi? I ask because the nuvi 350 can not internally receive the full North America (US and Canada) map update and won't be given the option during the update to install to a SD card. We therefore need to know if your update failure is being done on your old nuvi 350 or a newer model--and if a newer model, which model? And if you're doing a "clone" method described elsewhere at this site to install all of North America to a SD card for use in your nuvi 350, we need to know this, too.

Your seeing no street detail, inability to create routes, etc. is because the City Navigator is still locked and all that you're seeing in the nuvi's very undetailed and unrouteable Basemap. We need to get the new City Navigator installed and unlocked for this to work for you. In a pinch, Garmin may be able to help you through Customer Support's phone line next week, but maybe we can get this fixed yet this weekend on your own.

First, have you run WebUpdater to make sure that your device has the latest firmware? If not, I'd do this first:

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Second, you say you used GarminMapUpdater v3.1.13. Note that the current Windows version of GarminMapUpdater is 3.2.2 and can be found here (copy and paste this link to your browser):

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={60f574f0-602d-11e2-f3fb-000000000000}

My suggestion is to run the new 3.2.2 version of GarminMapUpdater to reinstall the new City Navigator map and see if that succeeds in installing the new 2014.10 map to your lifetime maps GPS that gave you a problem using an earlier version of the program.

Good luck and please report back with your results that will either be success or a request for further help.

Map

There is a posting to walk you through updating to a SD card here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34914

As mentioned before the 350 can not take the current update internally. You will need a full size 4GB SD card. I hate to say it but if you bought the lifetime update for a Nuvi 350 you paid more than the GPS is worth, I had one years ago.

I followed these directions to install to my 855 and worked for me. Also received lots of good advice with another problem from CraigW.

Not sure what happened here but in re-downloading the FULL version of the maps to my 3760LMT and not just the Canada/USA subset, everything came up OK. The map info telling me what version I had was missing on the first two attempts of the subset and thus the 'can't authenticate" message I guess. (The download was from the Garmin site)

I will fix my profile to indicate my gps model to a NUVI 3760LMT. I still have and use the 350 but use it mostly for the built-in MP3 player!!!

Thanks to everyone who replied!!!

You can get a MP3 player about the size of a matchbook. Then get a small FM transmitter which plugs into the earphone outlet and plays back through your FM radio.

Tiny MP3 : http://mp3-players.toptenreviews.com/ultra-compact/

FM transmitters on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/FM-Transmitters-/73836/i.html

This one you put all of the music on a SD card and plug the card into the unit. Plug the unit into a 12 volt outlet and play back through the car FM. Less than $ 6.00 free shipping.

Thanks for the MP3 links.

The CD player in my old truck is shot. This unit should work nicely.

I mentioned this type of solution in the thread asking why Garmin removed the MP3 player from their devices. The responses I got were...less than flattering.

FM transmitter

For me FM transmitter is somehow problematic in everyday use. I have it built in into GPS and practically not using it at all. Why? Because it's much more efficient to connect MP3 player or GPS with radio by cable (if radio has line-in connector) than use FM transmitter.

From experience I can tell you that airways are so full of different signals, that finally you will have to change frequency of transmitter every few minutes. It may work if you are traveling through deserts or empty country side, but in and around big cities you will have noise or radio stations will override your FM transmitter signal (it has power limited by regulations). Cable will give you more reliable and clear connection.

Unauthenticated Maps

I seem to hear about people having this problem more with the handheld units than auto units for some reason.
