Map size is 3.98 ... so just under the 4Gb FAT32 limit.
I wonder if Garmin had to reduce other embedded content (POI's, lane assists, active lane guidance, etc.) in order to keep the map file under 4 GB. It would be very difficult to know unless someone recognizes some missing content that was in the earlier version.

Just a WAG, here, but my guess is that despite the changes that may be made to the map, they are pretty inconsequential to the total amount of data that makes up the map. Sure, adding and subtracting roads and intersections add and subtract data, but compared to the overall size of the map... My guess is that adding and subtracting the built in POIs accounts for the bulk of the changes in the new map.

Another WAG here, but... It seems that POI data can be in a separate file from the maps proper; as the "Foursquare" POI data is on my Nuvi 57.
OK... I installed a SSD in this old, tired Laptop, retiring the MomentusXT (SSHD)..... Everything is back as it was (image recovery was flawless).....

Actually, I have read numerous complaints in various forums from users with SSD computers. It works fine of course, but Garmin Express eats up so much valuable space on the C: drive during a map update and Garmin does not give an option to use work space on a different drive. As long as you have plenty of free space on your SSD and know how to go in and delete the Garmin work files after a map update, you will be fine.
No matter how big your drive or drives are.... You will fill it/them!....
Especially so if you do video editing!!! (But then you have multiple other issues to worry about!) !
For my info... where does Garmin put the work files on a W7 system?
I use CrapCleaner Free, and have for years.. and that cleans out stuff, but would like to know where to look....
2 days into SSD... Nice.... Slightly faster than the SSHD it replaced... I'll bet if I had gone from 4800RPM drive to SSD I'd be happier than I am right now....
But since laptop is SATA II speeds, going from a 7200 RPM Momentus XT SSHD to a SSD is not as earth shattering as expected....
But SSD is faster....

Well, looking at mistakes Garmin is annoying people with for last few years, they may be onto something. After such long wait you will be so happy that you finally get update, that you will be less inclined to complaint about bugs and errors
I'll bet Garmin is moving to 3x a year for updates.
About a year ago, Garmin quietly changed their description for lifetime maps from "up to four" updates per year to "up to three" ... just read the subtitle on this UK product page: http://www.garmin.com/uk/maps/numaps#scroll-to-lifetime. It remains to be seen if they are now moving from 3 to 2. There must be some reason they numbered CN NA January update 2017.10 this year instead of 2016.30 as we expected. For the CN NA 2016 numbered versions, there were only 2 (.10 and .20). For the 2017 versions, will there be a 2017.30? Time will tell.
... we got a 2016.30 EU map so Garmin's numbering system continues to confuse. I wish they'd move to one where the first in any year is the year plus either .10, .20 etc so this years maps would have been 2016.10, 2016.20 etc
