Accidentally formatted Garmin Nuvi 760

Hi all, I recently formatted my Garmin on my laptop thinking it would help with the update bricking the systemand can't find a way to get the software back onto the system. I've searched extensively but I have no backup as I just inherited the device from my dad and he hasn't used it since 2007. Is there any resource to get the software files so I can copy and paste them into the device?

I've tried:

GarminCure3 : doesn't recognize the Garmin on the usb port

Various ways of pressing the screen and booting it to no avail.

Any advice?

Unfortunately ...

... depending how you formatted it you may be out of luck. Some formats do more than simply delete the files you can see and also remove operating files that you can't.

If you can't get it now into pre-boot more there is no hope I'm afraid. Sounds like your nuvi isn't even creating the GarminDevice.xml file which would imply the internal memory has been formatted also.

Format

Download a recovery program and install it on your laptop.
Many years ago I also formatted my GPS. To recover the files will take a long time and will involve some guesswork since all files will still be there and when the recovery program finds them usually the FIRST letter of the file will be missing.
I managed to get enough of the files back to be able to log onto Garmin and reinstall everything the way it was.

Recovery.

Don't think recovery programs can work if the unit won't even mount in mass storage mode. As sussamb said, the preboot/Cure3 method is probably your only hope. If you can't get that to work, you now own a brick.
