Formatted Nuvi 760

I accidently formatted my garmin NUVI 760 instead of the sd card. Now my computer will not recognize the Garmin or the Sd card, while it is in the Garmin. Is there anyway to recover it?

Welcome to the site

I assume that your device is registered with Garmin.

I also assume that you have not made a backup from which you can restore the device.

Several people who have had this problem have had success with contacting Garmin, explaining their problem, and then getting assistance. I suggest that you try this as a first attempt to resolve your problem.

Absolutely right info

But a long time ago long before I knew of POIfactory I made the same mistake on a Nuvi350. I used a recovery-program and successfully got the deleted files back. But they all needed some renaming since deleting removes the first letter of a file, assuming Windows was used and not a MAC! I was then able to log onto the Garmin website to completely renew all files.

Recover files

Melaqueman makes a good point.

A lot of use use a program called Recuva to find files that have been deleted.

Get a copy at
http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds

Download the "Portable" version into a folder on your computer (assuming it is a PC). Unzip the download and then run the executable (no install is needed)

I Doubt Garmin Will Help - No Harm Trying

I don't think Garmin will help with a unit as old as the Nuvi 760.

ssrcham, the OP stated that his computer does not recognize the Nuvi or the SD card so using a recovery program such as Recuva will be of no use.
I can't see how the program will work for a drive that is not visible.

Some options:
You can try doing a Google search for "GarminCure3 Tool", some people have used it with success but it may be quite complicated

Another option is to send it in for repair to

Formatted Garmin

Tech Support said they couldn't help because my computer will not recognize my garmin. Can not put my garmin in post mode. No Garmin software recognizes my unit. Is there anyway to put a firmware file on the sd card and get the unit recognized?

No ..

A SD card won't help you, but the advice given to you by muell9k might help.

Yes, there is. Follow muell9k's earlier suggestion:

to find and use GarminCure3. As stated, this will be a complicated procedure but it's your best hope at this point short of selling it to someone "as is" or finding someone to try fixing it for a fee.

Should you get it fixed—or buy a new Garmin GPS—do yourself a favor and backup the files on it:

I can get to the maps page. Can this nuvi 760 be put in MTP mode?

Formatted Garmin

Down loaded Garmincure3 and converted Garmin Nuvi 760 firmware, but when it gets to updater, it can't find my device. Installed Garmin USB drivers and no luck.

Try This

Simple answer NO, 760 does not have MTP mode, only certain newer Nuvi’s have MTP.

Read below, that may help you, obtained this info from another site. Let us know if that worked for you.

“Because you must start the Nuvi in so called "Pre-Boot Mode"
Here is the procedure how I did it:

1. Power OFF your Nuvi.
2. Press and keep holding the most right upper corner of the LCD screen
3. Power ON your Nuvi but DON NOT release your finger either from Power button nor from LCD screen (keep both pressed until the procedure ends)
4. You will notice Nuvi boots in Pre-Boot mode. Now quickly connect your USB cable. Prior to that make sure you have the latest Garmin USB drivers installed on your PC (it comes with MapSource software)
5. If you managed to connect your USB to your Nuvi when it is still in pre-boot mode, you will see that Windows recognizes a new device - "Garmin GPS unit" and starts searching for drivers. Nuvi after a while turns the pre-boot mode off, but nevermind, finish installing the windows drivers. If your are using XP just click "Automatically install driver software" and when it says "Your Hardware is ready for use" you can unplug your Nuvi.
6. Drag the "nuvi_sys.rgn" file over "Updater" and select USB.
7. Now repeat steps 1-4.
9. Updater will recognize the unit then you can press Update button
10. Once the "Loader" text appears on your Nuvi, you can release your fingers from LCD right upper corner and from Power button.
11. Wait until update finishes, then disconnect your Nuvi.”

Didn't work. Held both about 3 minutes. I get two different results. With SD card in, Garmin logo flashes once and screen goes black. W/O SD card screen flashed logo about 4 times before going black. Should I have the card in or out when performing these startups? Only with the SD card in am I able to boot regularly into the map screen normally and access all the menus, including the hidden ones like holding my finger on the battery icon to get to the inventory of the device. It tells me my USB is type B, No Cable detected, Battery capacity 100%, Rom and Ram Pass, Audio missing, and incompatible audio. Can I not get into Pre-Boot mode from inside the system?

Now I am confused.

Are you saying your 760 boots up and operates normally with the SD card installed? So the only problem is it will not mount as a Mass storage device, but otherwise operates corrctly? What do you get when you boot it without the SD?

Once I figure out how to access the drive, and get my computer to recognize it I shouldn't have any problems accessing or recovering the files. My problem is computer not seeing NUVI.

Didn't work.

Correct. W/O the card; however, all I get is the Logo continually recycling.

Is there a chance of getting it recognized?

Soon like it's time to buy a new unit

Sounds like it's time to buy a new unit.

Even if you get it running, the GPS is way out of date.

GPS prices have dropped ... look for refurbished units sold by Garmin. Lots of folks loved those.

Quit wasting your time ...

Why Not...

Since your 760 appears to function normally with the SD card installed, why not simply use it that way rather than spend money to repair or replace? Install the largest SD card the unit will accept (32 GB I believe). That should give you ample storage for maps and POI files. Using a class 10 SD card will improve the screen response time.

You can then use alandb’s excellent post on cloning SD cards to install future map updates:

Sorry ...

I didn't realize you were waiting for me. I'm afraid I can't help. If you can't get the unit into preboot mode to use the Cure3 method, I don't know of any other options. Actually $29 sounds like a reasonable price for repair. But if the unit won't go into preboot, I wonder how it can be repaired.

Get files from another owner?

I would think another 760 owner could copy the root directory and Garmin folder and provide those files to restore your unit. The map IMG files could be left out except the GMAPBMAP.img.

I have a 765T so I'm not sure that would be helpful.

PC can't "See" Gramin

Please remember that the PC can't recognize the 760. That's in the first post.

That is ssrcham's obstacle. If the PC could recognize the 760, then the proper files could be installed.

Since the Nuvi functions properly (with SD card), EXCEPT when connecting to the PC, I’m wondering if there is a problem with your Nuvi’s USB connector on the unit. This will prevent the PC recognizing the Nuvi

There is also the possibility your USB cable is bad or you’re connecting through a USB hub. You may consider trying a different cable, or a USB port direct to the motherboard, or perhaps even a different PC.

I’m also curious to see what files are on the SD card that’s permitting the Nuvi to boot with the card inserted.
You will need to have a card reader on your PC or a USB SD card adapter to read the contents since you can’t do it through your Nuvi.
If possible report back and indicate what files are on the SD card.

Can you suggest any other companies that restore the drive since my computer will not recognize mine and allow me to update my maps?

Computer not recognizing Garmin

I have all of the files and firmware and updates I need. Unfortunately because the Garmin has corrupted files, it can't be seen by my computer, and I can't update my maps or anything. Satellites and rest of Garmin is functioning great. Just no map.

Formatted Nuvi 760

IT WORKED !!! Big thanks to bdhsfz6 and alandb for the cloning of the sd card. My Gamin map is back. Still got to figure out how to get it into Mass Storage mode from sd card. That way I can restore my original files back to the Garmin itself.

NO MTP Mode

Your Nuvi 760 does not have Mass Storage mode so that won't solve your problem of the Nuvi not being recognized. If it's not recognized you CAN'T transfer any files from the SD Card or PC.
Heres a list of Garmins with MTP mode:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41416

Since your Nuvi functions with the SD card, I still believe it's either USB cable related, or connecting to a USB hub, or the USB connector on the Nuvi lost contact with the main board. As I suggested earlier try a different USB cable and connect to a USB port that's wired directly to the motherboard.
I'm sorry but I'm unable to offer any additional advice.

I don't know of any other reasonable and reliable GPS repair service. I see Jim at Sharcnet is closed due to moving to a new building. Since your Nuvi is functioning I would wait and check the site periodically and then contact him.
