3490 Overheat ?

Hi. I have a 3490 and several times lately it has said Overheat or something like that.

Anyone else been experiencing with their units ?

I know years ago there was a recall on some batteries that were causing overheating, but the 3490 wasn't among those units.

Some of the newer

Some of the newer enhancements have that warning to let you know you need to take it off the dashboard because the direct sunlight is overheating the unit.

Yes

My wifes 3790 sits on the dash and in the summer the sun hits it a lot. Generally get the "to hot had to shut down message"
It also buzzes, when too hot. Turn the volume down and its gone,
Its for sure heat damaged. It was already 86 all day yesterday. I'm guessing its going to start buzzing soon...lol
Bin going on for two years now still works fine though.

I didn't know that

i really didn't know that they did that. Maybe our 2599 doesn't have that feature. Thanks for the information.

It is definitely an Over Heat warning. Left in direct sunlight while parked, even if asleep, it will throw the Over Heat warning and if left alone it will shut down, then show the reason as Overheated.

Overheat

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I've used Garmin Nuvi's for YEARS and never saw that message.

Even on this 3490, it's something that never showed up before.

I guess it was something that may have been added to the last software update.

Thanks again !

Hmm

Tell you what!
I'm sure it will happen again this summer and if i can catch it before the wife acknowledges the fault, i'll grab a pic.
BTW why does everyone want to google stuff. Ive never found that search engine to be the be-all and end-all in search engines.

3790

My 3790 has shut down because of thermal loading on the processor. It's happened more than a few times with no ill effect.

OVERHEAT ?

There is always something new to learn at POI factory

Simple Way to Prevent Overheating

A recently posted FAQ: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/46288 , prompted my response to this 3 month old post.

I'm often too lazy to remove my Garmin from the dash when parked and often get the overheat warning during hot weather. To prevent this, I keep a white washcloth in the glove box and just toss it over the GPS. It looks a little strange but solves the problem.

A few times, mine has acted

A few times, mine has acted very funny while it was very hot. Cooling it off seems to have helped but may leave you directionally challenged sad ...

A hat

A hat or anything that keeps the direct sun from the unit is effective. In the years past there have been many things built and offered for sale that addressed thee sun problems from clipon shades to tents.

Has been using a hat for a while. It helps also to conceal the presence of the GPSr.

Conceal?

I haven't heard of Gps theft in quite some time.

A Light Colored Hat Works

I used the hat idea as a cover for a while. The problem was, I would put the hat on, take it off outside the vehicle and forget to put it back.

I settled on the washcloth (or small white rag) since it takes up little space and I have no reason to remove it from the vehicle.

As you said, there are a lot of cover ideas out there. Use whatever is handy. The key is to use something with a light color to avoid absorbing heat.

white cloth

I buy cloth diapers to use as durable car cleaning rags. I keep one in the car and use it as a "shroud" when it is above 85F and the sun is on the dash / Garmin.

My old Nuvi 750 , if left

My old Nuvi 750 , if left on the dashboard in the sun a long time, I find it can not be turned on and will not completely boot up.

I think it was an overheating problem, as it goes away after a while - at least 15 minutes.

So, I try to remember and remove it from my dash when parking a long time in a sunny area.

Good To Know

Thanks for the info. Didn't know it had this feature
