SD Card

Updated and registered my new 57LM using Garmin Express. Worked fine but it showed my memory was 87% used and said to consider more memory. Put a new Sandisk 8GB Micro SD card in 57LM, Used Garmin Express again. All up to date but same memory msg. Formatted SD card to FAT32 with same results. Windows 10 recognizes card but GE does not. My question is when memory is all used up will GE recognize and put maps on SD card? Do I need to do anything?

I'm not familiar with the 57LM, but for my Zumo's, which are a lot older, I install a portion of the maps on the unit itself, then use mapsource to put the remainder on the SD card.

Express will only use a card if needed, with the free space on your device you should be fine for a while. Note you'll still get the warning even if you insert a card.

Some older devices either won't have space or Express can't install directly to a card, eg some Zumos, but you'll be fine.

Vern,

The Garmin message was warning you that a future update may need more space than available in the nuvi.

The nuvi 57 isn't listed in the memory FAQ so maybe you could offer your finding to the maintainer of the faq:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375

If your 57 is a 2GB device and you're not using a SD card, you already do not have the full map. If an 8GB device, you'll likely update to the nuvi with a full map for a few more map updates. If a 4GB device, it's hard to say. What does your myMaps page show as installed maps?

The SD card, once installed, will not be used until it's needed and that may be 1-4 updates from now. Don't fret, but eventually you will see a message saying that your nuvi can't install all of a map update and you'll be offered an installation of a subset of the full map or asked if you want the full map update to go to the SD card. This is when you say yes and the new map will go to the SD card and the old map in the nuvi deleted. From then on, your nuvi will have lots of free space and future maps will continue to go to the SD card:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

As much as some would like, you can't easily have the map updater install to the SD card before it's needed.

If you want some extra work, you can force this by using the clone technique and then manually removing the old map files from the nuvi:

Looking at the Garmin page it shows nüvi "57LM arrives pre-loaded with detailed maps of the lower 49 U.S. states" . See https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/nuvi-57lm/prod50... .Based on that info the memory is not going to be that large . Lower 48 most likely not taking up all the memory yet but close.

Thanks for all the answers. Looks like all I need to do is wait for GE to tell me it needs more memory and then tell it to put maps on SD Card. This the place to go for help, that's for sure.

Right

Just keep up what you are doing and let Garmin Expree do its thing when the time comes.

I have an older 1450 that I keep around and it maxed out the internal memory a long time ago. GE just installs what it needs to the SD card automatically.

Same here

GE will pick the SD by itself.
