Garmin Model Comparison - 2789LMT vs 70 LMT

Does anyone know what the key differences are between a Garmin 2789 LMT and 70 LMT? I have a 2798LMT which is basically a 2789 plus a backup camera. The 70 LMT unit is the newest 7" voice activated unit but it doesn't look like they've changed a whole lot to me. Thoughts anyone?

.

This may help some: http://www.gpscity.com/compare/drvs70lmt&nuvi2789lmt

I agree that it does not look like there are a lot of differences. By the way, did Garmin finally drop the TrafficTrends and MyTrends features on the Drive products?

The Key difference

The key difference, at least for many of us here, is that the nuvi 2789 has a powered mount while the new Drive 70 does not.

No routes on the Drive models?

Doesn't show a figure against routes? Must be a mistake as it says it has trip planner.

Glad to see myTrends and TrafficTrends gone, never thought they were useful.

myTrends and TrafficTrends

Guess what - I just spoke with Garmin and was told yes it still has myTrends and TrafficTrends. I actually do find them helpful. Without programming in an address or destination, it comes up and tells you how long until arrival and traffic en route which is great I think. The traffic trends is helpful for situations where you may not have good signal or be in an urban coverage area and yet it "knows" where the bottlenecks lie and lights those up yellow and accounts for that in calculation times so I actually do like it and find it useful. Apparently it's a fairly standard feature now so not listed online they say.

Difference

Guess the difference is that here in UK digital traffic is very reliable so better to use current than historical info. As for myTrends I never drive anywhere often enough for myTrends to kick in smile

At least though you can turn them off!

Now you guys got me into looking at a new unit...smile

What is the difference? Does the cord plug straight into the unit? What are the difference in performance with a power mount and a non power mount?

Will the bean bag mount for a 2450 fit a drivesmart 70?

On

On a unit with a powered mount the cord plugs into the mount/cradle. With a non powered mount the cord plugs into the unit. One advantage of the powered mount is you can disconnect the Nuvi and take it away without having to always disconnect the power cable. You can just leave the power cable always connected to the mount.

Unless Garmin has changed the size of the "ball connection" pieces for the cradle/mount and the unit from what it's been since the original Nuvi 350 which was released in 2005 then the drivesmart 70 will work with your bean bad mount. The one issue would be is the 70 so big that it would hit the "bean bag" edges of the mount causing it to always face in an upward position instead of straight on or being unable to swivel while attached to the mount. Probably not an issue but something you may want to check.

I do always leave the mount plugged in so disconnecting the cable would be the only issue.

With the beanbag I sometimes set it on my lap faced up and the rest of the times it sets on the center console facing a little up so hopefully that won't be an issue. If it is will have to see what other options are out there.
Thanks for the information...

powered mount vs non-powered mount.

Another advantage of a powered mount over a non powered mount is that the USB port on the device with a non powered mount gets much more wear and tear, and the weight of the power cable puts additional stress on the port. The USB port has been a frequent point of failure on these devices as the device ages. This has been reported many times in the various forums I read.

There are ways to mitigate the problem before it occurs, and of course just being careful and being gentle when you connect and disconnect the device from the cable helps a lot.

I think I do want another powered mount like my 2450. Never had any problems with it.

I just got a DriveLuxe 50LMTHD that has a magnetic mount. It is a very good unit and I think that you will like it.

Will look at that one but

I think I want a 7" as my eyes aren't what they used to be (if I can talk my husband into it. smile )

7" with powered mount

If you want a 7" screen AND a powered mount, that limits your choices down to 3 or 4 models ... nuvi 2789LMT, nuvi 2797LMT or RV 760LMT. There is nothing in the new Drive line with that combination.

What are the difference in an rv model and car models?

--
Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

RV

As I understand it, the RV models have an additional data base to assist RV owners by avoiding routes where the RV would be restricted (low clearance, tunnels that don't allow LP tanks, etc). Also they may have additional POI's that are of specific interest to RV owners (camp grounds, dump stations, etc).

Wouldn't want to go out of the way in a car because of low clearance and tunnels. Would be nice if I had an RV though. Will tell my son about them.
Thanks, Mary

Have you tried the Garmin

Have you tried the Garmin site? Has a good product comparison, lists several side by side with all the features.

The RV mode of the 760, which provides routing and POI's for larger vehicles, can easily be turned off. The unit then operates as an automotive unit. I use mine my in wife's car as well as my truck / trailer. You are of course paying for something you don't need however.

Thanks

That helps. Just needed to know if I should be comparing RV models also while trying to decide what I wanted. Thanks
