Convert Google Map Route to GPX File

Does anyone have any recommendations on software I can use to covert a route created in Google Maps to GPX format so I can load it to my Garmin?

Thanks.

BaseCamp

BaseCamp will import kml files and you can then export it to your device. There is also this method:

Thanks for the reply. Using

Thanks for the reply.

Using the second method generates a GPX file that had over 300 waypoints.

The route I created in Google Maps has only a start and end point, so where the other 300+ waypoints came from I have no idea.

Will try Garmin Basecamp.

How do others create routes for OSM maps on their Nuvi?

I

I used to use a site called GmaptoGPX but the creator stopped supporting this facility because of Google's constant changes to there back end. His website however has now been updated to link to a new site that is being updated regularly. Have a look at:

https://blog.sverrirs.com/2015/08/converting-google-maps-dir...

as it looks pretty cool.

Update - Just tried this new site and it works great for converting a Google Maps route to a GPX file.

I also use a couple of other methods for creating routes/trips for my Nuvi. The one I use most often is a website called https://trips.furkot.com/ which has a ton of features for creating your route/trips and has a built in facility for creating Garmin GPX files.

The other program I use for creating routes/trips is called TyreToTravel (http://www.tyretotravel.com/download-tyre/ ). This program lets you easily create routes/trips and download them directly to your computer attached Garmin device.

Both Furkot and Tyre use Google Maps as their map database.

All "Routes" need navigation "waypoints"

You need waypoints to plot your desired path, rather than a straight line. If you look at the gpx representation for a route (looking inside the file with a text editor, etc.) you'll see hundreds or even thousands of waypoints. It's just the software in the display method/program that "hides" them from you. An actual Garmin "route" simply hides the waypoints that are strictly for navigation, and only displays the ones that we typically call "waypoints" (POIs really) which we WANT to SEE along the route.

It's probably easier (and quicker?) to just pick a start & end points within BaseCamp, let it use your preferences and plot a route, then adjust it as needed. BaseCamp plots the coords using the same map that's in your nuvi rather than OSM or other map data. After all, it's the actual map you'll be using to navigate on your device. I really only find kml file imports valuable for plotting and getting individual POIs into my Garmins.

Clear as mud? grin

Basecamp error msg

So I spent some time learning and have imported OSM map into basecamp. I will be navigating with OSM.

If I create a route in mygoogle maps and then try to import it into basecamp (OSM map), I notice the following:

1. You have to send "entire map" to the kml file (selecting just the layer with the route results in an error when importing to Basecamp). In the youtube videos I notice only the specific route layer is sent to the KML file not entire map.

2. Once the KML file (actually its a *.kmz file) is imported I can see the "track" and it looks accurate and good.
BUT I get an error when trying to calculate the route. It just draws a straight line between point A-D (as the crow flies whilst ignoring points B & C totally) and says "Error creating Route".
I have selected the activity (driving) correctly before the route calculation.
I get this same error even if I select "global map" in basecamp.

I would insert a photo here but cannot figure out how to do it.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

A couple

A couple of things:

1. It would help if we knew what model GPS you are using as the procedure for seeing/driving your route may be different depending on the model being used.

2. To post a picture here you would need to upload it to a facility like Photobucket.com and then place the resulting URL into your post here.

After spending hours trying

After spending hours trying to get address to address routing working on OSM I decided to keep it simple and have now purchased the official Garmin Maps for my destination.

I wish I had done that initially as it would have saved me hours of time.

Thanks to all for your kind assistance, its much appreciated.

OSM address.

I have never had much luck with address search when using North America OSM maps. My experience has been that it will usually get you to the correct city and street, but not the correct house number. On some addresses, the search will return a location that is many blocks or even miles away from the actual house number.

As I recall from a few years ago trying to bypass Garmin's maps, etc., maps and the software displaying and (more importantly) routing using them are very tightly intertwined. Best thing (imo) for using Basecamp and/or Garmin nav devices is to use Garmin maps. Some nav devices (Tom Tom??) may be able to use OSM maps and route correctly with them, but I think Garmin's complete 'package' works best together.

Yeah.. the older I get, the better I like simple too. grin
