Google Maps error leads demolition company to wrong home

Do not blame Google Maps when you tear down the wrong house! Talk about an issue matching an address with a geo-position.

Not where we use to live; it was worse, they used an incorrect routing that always put them in a sink hole. The whole neighborhood kept telling the powers that be their routing was wrong; but would they listen to the people who lived there?

The funnest was the 18 wheeler in the sink hole after he, the driver, was told he couldn't get through that way despite what Map Quest said.

No one home

This reminded me of the house demolition in the movie iRobot! Since they didn't check if it was the correct house I wonder if they checked if anyone was home before they knocked it down?

Google Search

Now the lawyers will use Google to locate the property owners.

Check, then double check

and then someone else verifies the info. as being correct Stupid people do stupid things. It's not Google, it's the people who lack common sense.

Only a guide

The disclaimer when the device boots up or on the website usually tell you to check and they are not 100%

Not the first time...

Certainly won't be the last. Try to make something idiot-proof, someone keeps producing better idiots. :-/

The contractor is an idiot

No excuse for not confirming the address first. Who shows up at a house, right or wrong address and does not confirm they are at the right location before tearing into it?

Wow...

Wow. Just wow...

..

You only do that once!

A utility survey is required to excavate a mailbox, what kind of contractor would rely on one source to tell them where to demolish a home?

whoops.

Ain't technology marvelous.
Before surgery, hospitals ask you what you are having done, and then write on the correct place with a sharpie so there are less mix-ups.

Doesn't seem too hard to have the job boss show up a day ahead of time to verify stuff, and put a flag or marking tape on the correct property.

What a good photo for the demo company at the top of the article!

Years ago I heard about a contractor building a house on the wrong side of the road. The owner of the land told them to move it.

Armatures: Time to get lawyered up!

I sure there will be a whole crew that will be willing to turn this matter into a political issue rather than financially liable incompetency. mad

Computer error?

We all know computers never make errors.

That is some lazy worker

I thought that they have to check to see if anyone home and all the check list that they have to go through before start demolition.

The real rub is the company

The real rub is the company that tore the house down trying to weasel out of paying for it or admitting guilt. I saw this on the news and wondered why their procedures are so loose they just assume they are supposed to tear down the house that their little Android phone tells them to.

Who told them.

Who contracted them to demolish the house and why did they not accompany the contractor to the house?
