Thanks

And wouldn't you know I updated all 3 of my units last night. I had that SD problem with my 2539, had to use a different brand card.

Last PM I did the Map Update

Last PM I did the Map Update on 660 SD Card, and had no problem with GE 4.1.1.13...
Actually, I've never had any problems with Map Update on PC (W7-64) to SD Card.

As you know, I alternate between 2 SD cards for map update.

SD Card used Last PM was 8GB SDHC Mode 6 Micro Center card

Prior to last PM, used 16GB SDHC Mode 10 Micro Center card.

Problem Loading 2017.10 with GE

I loaded 2017.1 yesterday, on my 2555 and all seemed to be going well. Had a bit older version of GE and got to end and red banner at top said error, but no explanation of the error. MyMaps showed that 2017.1 did not load.

Updated to 4.1.16.0 and tried again. Same problem with error message, but this time MyMaps showed no maps at all and this was confirmed when I touched View Map.

I then reverted to the tried and true Map Updater and had no problem with the upload. MyMaps now shows that I have loaded 2017.1.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Nice.

After, I don't know, 30 or 50+ updates, Garmin Express has gotten pretty stable, at least for me.

I did not have that problem, but at the 50% point of the install, GE started acting strange with the status bar jumping around frantically and the remaining time jumping from 7 minutes to 20 hours and back. I was getting worried, but then GE gave me the message that I was up to date with version 2017.10. I checked my 2699 and all is well with the new maps.

I mentioned in the 2017.10 thread that I had this same problem with the status bar jumping around with the wild time remaining indicator bouncing around and after about 30 minutes I got sick of it and cancelled. I restarted and picked "re-install map". It picked up again at the "45 minutes remaining" point but this time I too got the "Red Bar" error message, (forgot to mention that in my earlier post) redface but GE also said it successfully installed the new map. Not trusting this, I picked re-install -again- and all went well.

This is what is so nice about this forum: you see a few people having a duplicate issue and then you know it's not just you! Note also that I had no old versions of GE on my laptop so it was a fresh install from them with the current version they offered Thursday. This glitchy update followed about 3 in a row previous with absolutely no GE issues installing the new maps.

~snip~

This has happened for the past few map updates using GE. Other than that each update appears to have taken without problem.

Looks like Garmin might be doing the same as usual. Get something working and then mess it up.

This is the same as me. I feel better (sort of) when Williston has had the same experience. I have a lot of respect for his knowledge level, compared to mine.

50% not really

I did Garmin Express Install to two 3790LMT models. It appeared to me with careful monitoring that the progress indicator chose to represent 50% completion as the boundary at which all map file downloading to the PC from the Garmin site was finished, followed by the remaining 50% being a tiny amount of activation and file preparation, followed by steady file transfer from PC to 3790.

This partitioning naturally meant that indicated rate of progress differed greatly between the two phases. My Comcast service is faster than it used to be and Garmin's servers must not have been very busy, as the 5 Gbytes of download from server to PC took well under 10 minutes. So even for the first 3790 that "50%" took far less time than the second 50%, which seems limited to about 1.6 Mbyte/second by the USB port hardware on the 3790. For the second 3790, it was clear that GE reused already downloaded files, in the main, and yet it still used the "50% means starting on activation, preparation, and file copy to unit".

In my case I did not see the jumping around at 50% boundary reported by others, but probably both my PC and my GPU differ.

My only bad GE experience this time arose when I asked for a PC install which it told me would include a fresh copy of BaseCamp. When I next launched BaseCamp, I was told it wanted to install the new version, but when I gave permission, it failed, complaining of a corrupt file. I subsequently downloaded a fresh install file manually from the Garmin update site, which installed without incident.
