All messed up (No unlocked maps)

After doing a hard reset I tried to use Garmin Xpress. It gives me an error and must close. Now what? My internal card is just about full, how do I start from scratch?

Map install says "No unlocked maps were found for this device."

When I say messed u...I screwed up my back up and it wants to skip files. So how do I do day one?

Hard resets

Hard resets just reset the unit to factory. No FW, or map wipes are involved. It just needs to be personalized again.

How did you reset it?

Do you have an SD card in the slot? If so, take it out. Does it boot normally?

Have you tried map updater, instead of GE?

Have you tried a FW update with Web Updater?

I would try those first before anything else.

So what if I delete the files on the internal storage, is there a reset of sorts, seeing as my backup is gone.

Danger Will Robinson!

We all feel your pain but I'm not sure that we all really understand where you and your 2595 are. We need more info.

The nuvi 2595 like most newer devices, has 8GB of internal storage and this is more than enough to install all of North America map updates. Why are you using a SD card? If one of the Garmin update programs suggests you need to use a SD card, we want to know why the 2595 is too full right now to do a full map update internally. And if you manually (the clone technique) tried to install a map update to the SD card, let us know.

Since the 2595 boots OK with the SD card removed, boot the GPS without the SD card running only on internal battery power and tell us the following:

-battery icon charge: how charged is it?

-what map if any is on the 2595? Tap Tools/Settings/myMaps, then tell us what items are there and which have a check mark.

-what happens when you try to use Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater on the nuvi (without the SD card)? You should either see that it says you have a new map to install or that you have the latest map but can reinstall it. Have you tried to install or reinstall the map with no SD card? If so, what happened? If it failed, have you tried a second time?

Let's keep things simple for now. Your 2595 does not need a SD card for a full North America map update so let's try to update the nuvi without a card.

Let's also try to keep our efforts in this thread. It looks like you've been looking for help on 2-3 different threads and this could create great confusion among us all.

ok

Got GE installed and says the same, not enough room.

Installed SD (like updater said)and it said map was already installed. myMaps is empty. Just a generic map showing.

Tried to install map to computer-said it failed then said it was completed. Talk about confused.

2 maps are on the computer though, so it did load the new map.

Yes, I got them installed on the computer but not on the nuvi. I need to free up space on the internal storage or find out how to get them working on the SD card. I found the instructions confusing but I'll give it another go. I know I need to add something to the SD to allow this, GE and mapupdater don't recognize the SD.

The maps are on the computer, just can't get them on the NUVI.

Cloning?

Are you suggesting cloning? If so you need to copy GarminDevice.xml from the Garmin folder on your device to a Garmin folder on your card. GE will then see the card as your device and install the map to that.

Two thoughts

skoville wrote:

GarminMapUpdater won't install, not enough room.
2nd attempt says not enough room, install SD card.

1) It would be good to know what's in the nuvi's storage now preventing the installation of a North America update. As I said earlier, an 8GB Garmin device should be able to install City Navigator North America updates internally unless the owner added files (extra maps, etc.) or Garmin left unneeded or corrupt files on the device in the past. What version of City Navigator NA NT was on your device before the recent failed update occurred? How was that last update (the one that worked) installed to the GPS?

2) If we can't figure out #1 above, and since Garmin Express is saying it's giving you the Install to SD option, I suggest going out and buying a new 8GB Sandisk SD card, inserting it to the GPS when powered off, then connecting to the computer, restart Garmin Express and reinstall the new City Navigator. You could try saving a few bucks by reformatting your current SD card that's not working but given the effort you've already expended and the minimal cost of a new card, I'd buy a new SD card and try from there. When starting Garmin Express with the new card in GPS, Garmin Express will either tell you that you have a map update to install or tell you that you're up to date but can reinstall the map if you want. Go ahead and install or reinstall, whichever GE thinks, then see what happens.

Please remember to install and remove the SD card only when the nuvi is powered off and make sure that you safely disconnect the nuvi from the computer at the end of the installation.

I very strongly suggest you use Garmin Express (or possibly GarminMapUpdater) rather than using the clone technique to get the map to the SD card.

We never asked before: what brand, speed and capacity SD card were you using?

Progress...

Ok, it sounds like progress is being made even though I realize you are very frustrated with what is happening.

Your device is supposed to have plenty of space, so something has gotten corrupted and is causing the problem

You say 2 maps are on the computer: could you give us the complete paths for them. For example I have a map at
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\City Navigator North America NT 2016.20.gmap
Note: I have not yet run to update to 2017.10

It sounds like there is the latest map 2017.10 and the previous one that have been downloaded.

When you have the device attached to the computer, look at the drive named (probably) Garmin nuvi (X:) {where X: is the drive assigned by your computer} using Windows Explorer. Then right click on that drive and select "Properties". Let us know the amount of "Used space" and "Free space" which should be something like 5.2 GB and 1.99 GB using my 2595 as an example. If not close to that then we need to find out why.

Now look in the .system folder and see what, if any, .img files are there. Is there a "gmapprom.img"? Are there any other very large (ie. more than 2 GB) files there?

In the Garmin folder is a file named "GarminDevice.xml". If you could open this file with Word (and you may have to let Word install an extension for xml files) and search for the character string "gmapprom.img", it would be helpful to know what the 6 line above that line say.

Map problem

No need for cloning. Your device when running MapUpdater or Garmin Express allows installing to SD card if not enough space is available on the unit. As posted you have 8 GB of storage space. I have a 2597 and only using 5.25 of storage. You need to find what is using all that space.Must be something that is duplicated on the device. Do you have screen capture or snipping tool? So you can post what is in your system folder and other folders. Will need something like one drive or similar program to link them to the forum. Cases like this is why we need on POI Factory the ability to attached files. It would be a big help in fixing problems easier.

I would resolve the space problem first. Easy way out would be pull the SD card out and reformat it. Then reinstall the maps by using Garmin Express and let it go to SD card..Based on your post it sounds like new maps are on the computer. You can also manually do it by coping the complete map using http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31185

You only need to copy the xml file to the SD card if you're trying to use the clone technique which we are recommending you avoid at all costs. If a map needs to be installed to the SD card, Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater will take care of it with an empty SD card.

But still, the best solution is to find out why your nuvi doesn't have room to install the map update internally to the nuvi.

I've run into

I've run into the same map install issue Skoville is having in the past. I corrected the problem by manually deleting the map files from the unit (of course, I did a backup first). It seems in some units (possibly different revisions of the same base model) don't delete the old map before attempting to install the new one,

My suggestion is to copy off the old map, delete it then rerun the install to the unit.

However I suspect he's so fed up he just wants to get it working, cloning should enable him to do that. Trying to work out exactly what's causing an issue like this can be difficult via the forum.

That finally happen with sussamb suggestion, BUT the myMaps is still empty and no map on Nuvi.

I think BoxCar is close, I think I have the main file so bucked up it's garbage.

When I did the backup I inadvertently had flies outside the folder. When trying to reassemble I either missed one (or more) or deleted something.

Would CW allow me to send the images of the files , main,SD, and messed up backup? Or anyone else that thinks it would help.

Your images do not show file sizes, dates or what files are in subfolders. All of this information will be useful in helping you sort this out.

One thing is obvious is that you have the map files in the root folder. They should be in .system.

Really, your best bet is to CALL (not email) Garmin support while at your computer. They will be able to access your nuvi remotely and hopefully get it straitened out.

Now it looked better when I copied and pasted (proper spacing) but it looks like it will scrunch everything together when posted. However the info you would want to know is there.

I did Start > Programs > Accessories > and then right-clicked on "Command Prompt" and "Run as administrator" - answering "yes" to the question. The command prompt window appeared as
C:\Windows\sustem32>
My 765 was attached as J: so in the command prompt window I typed
J:

I then typed

and hit enter, and got
J:\>
I then typed
cd\Garmin
and got
J:\Garmin>
I then typed
dir>contents.txt
and hit enter, and got
J:\>

Now I went to an Explored window of my J: drive and found contents.txt in the root. I opened this file and did Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C and pasted the contents of J:\contents.txt into this post.

I then went to the Garmin directory and did the same for the contents.txt I found there.

The results are above.

I assume this technique will work in Win 10. maybe someone can verify that.

Could you have done that?
