A new one on me

As I was getting ready to leave for our Christmas gatherings, I turned on the Garmin to set the destination it came up with "Memory Full".
I went through all the screens and found out that the favorites screen had listed all the Public radio stations from my POI file. Bewildered for I had not touched that radio file since 2014. I erased several dozen and the Garmin worked ok. I looked up my POI files and public radio came up twice.
After lunch time we started again and "Memory Full" came up again. I looked up favorites and it had all the public radio stations listed so while I drove my wife deleted some of the station and all was well.
This repeated itself again the next day so that evening I hooked it up to my laptop to see what I could find. In my Radio Station files I found the File "Public Radio Stations.GPX" there. Do not know how it got there so I deleted it and the public radio stations. I then deleted all of my favorites and from the on the Garmin acted normal.
The question would be "does a GPX file in the POI file of the Garmin create this problem?". Later on I will intentionally put a GPX file in my Garmin and see if I can recreate this problem.

I prefer GPX files and never had this happen.

I have had a 550 765t and presently use a nuvi44 and 2558. Do you make sure when you update/re-load your POI files onto your Garmin that you delete the old file first or at least that it was deleted by the POI loader?

I do delete

If I upload/upgrade a file I make sure that the old one is deleted. My public Radio file was in a separate folder as are most of the files so that I only upgrade that one. Public Radio has not been touched since 2014 when I used the internet to check to see if they were still public.
I have a 1490 with the last map update.

Saved places or favorites

When you open the GPX folder and deleted the "Public Radio Stations.GPX" then deleting the favorites from the GPS. You fixed the problem.Every time you turned the GPS back on the Radio stations were loaded back into the current.GPX file. Not sure of any other way this could have happen except for placing the file into the GPX folder along side the current.GPX file.

manual loading

That can be a reason to load POI files using POI Loader. I have all my POI files placed in folders on my computer, and when I'm loading them I just reload whole file at once. In current version of PIO Loader you can create a few folder structures and load them as separate files. It should help avoid this sort of problems like you had.

Your problem seem to be related to wrong placement of GPX file not corruption of file itself. So using POI Loader should make sure, that this situation will not repeat in future.

Favorites/Saved Places vs POIs

This seems to be a misunderstanding of what constitutes a "Favorite" versus what is a POI.

For our purposes, we should consider a POI as a "point of interest" that has been placed on the device by POILoader as a .gpi file.

Similarly, a "Favorite" is a place that has been entered by a "save" on the device - once having found an address, intersection, etc - OR because the user has put a .gpx file anywhere on the device or in folders on the SD card.

Putting a .gpx file on the device is a handy way to quickly enter multiple "favorites" without locating them individually. For example, whenever we go on vacation, I create a file of Pharmacies that are open 24 hour and of quick-cares or emergency rooms that are open 24 hours a day in the vacation area - I usually choose 25 miles from where we will stay.

Then I make a copy of "current.gpx" on the device - putting it on my computer. To get these 24 Hour locations into my Favorites, all I have to do is to put the just created .gpx file in the GPX folder on the device. When I get home and no longer need the vacation spot 24 Hour locations, I delete all the Favorites - and the 24 hour vacation ".gpx" file - and then place the saved "current.gpx" file back onto the device AFTER RENAMING IT TO "current1.gpx" or "test.gpx" or "whatever.gpx" - anything other than "current.gpx"

In the Index under Favorites, you might want to read:
How Do I Get My Favorites/Saved Places To Stay Deleted? {G}

BUT

I had revised the file on 10/2/2014 and with POI-LOADER put it in the Garmin on the micro card and have not touched it since for public radio does not change format and has very little ads.
Since then I have been to Phoenix,LA,ST. Louis, Clear Lake and Paducah with no problems.
I use POI-LOADER every time to upgrade files on my Garmin and do one file at a time.
The only files I upgraded before leaving were rest areas, truck stops, road food and Diners Drivins and Dives so how public radio.gpx got in is beyond me.

POILoader will ....

POILoader will happily create .gpi files from .gpx files either on the device or on the SD card. It will put the .gpi file either on the device or on the computer as you direct.

POILoader will read .gpx files within the "Folder" to which it was pointed and from one level of sub-folders under that high level folder. It will even use the GPX folder on the device and therefore read and process "current.gpx" Note that the device itself treats "current.gpx" as "OutputFromUnit" (see your "GarminDevice.xml" file) but POILoader will read it like any other file.

@kurzemnieks, I think you have indicated that there was indeed a .gpx file for public radio on your device. Any more details that you can provide would be helpful.

GPX

A Garmin will read a GPX file in any folder on the device or SD card and add it to the Favorites which are in Current.GPX. They've been doing this for several years now, that's why you need to delete trips downloaded from BaseCamp or MapSource transferred to the GPS. They are stored as GPX files and all the points are added to Current on boot.

poi

Just for clarification.

A point of interest, or POI, is a specific point location that someone may find useful or interesting. A GPS point of interest specifies, at minimum, the latitude and longitude of the POI.So both a favorite and custom pois are made up of points of interest. Not sure if there is any misunderstanding about this. Especially to most members here at POI Factory.

Wikipedia does indeed start by saying

I realize that for most people there would seem to be little difference a POI, a "Favorite" and a "Saved Place" but
Garmin.com does seem to differentiate between them.

For example Garmin says:

Quote:

How are Points of Interest (POIs) updated?
Answer:
Garmin's mapping provider uses multiple sources to ensure Points of Interest (POIs) remain up-to-date.

In addition to marketing companies that supply these databases, our mapping provider also uses local government agencies, field employees, customer feedback from our error report form, and even direct contact with merchants by field employees or by calls from these merchants.

Garmin devices include a selection of millions of POIs. Although this is still not a comprehensive list, the methods used to gather this data helps to ensure that the POIs that are included are as up-to-date and accurate as possible.

Looking at other FAQs at https://support.garmin.com/search/supportResults.faces?q=poi...
would seem to indicate the Garmin considers POIs to be those things in .gpi files.

Also, in the FAQ https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...
Garmin distinguishes between the two categories.

Or , confusingly, Garmin in this FAQ uses three categories in https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

points of interest

They are all meet the definition as a point of interest. Garmin may make reference as saved places, favorites and etc but that does not change what they are.

POI Loader

"POI Loader is free software for your computer that lets you upload customized points of interest (POIs) to your compatible Garmin device*. With the help of POI Loader, you can update your compatible Garmin GPS with the latest POIs, including restaurants, safety camera locations and tourist destinations".
