Oh, it's been mentioned. As a matter of fact, every time a new version is released, someone always pops up and whines about their AV complaining about the site. But for heavens sake, just how long would the recommendations for EPE last if the site really was a malicious site? Obviously, you trust this site for files, how long do you think POI Factory would last if it routinely endorses malicious sites?

While I agree with you here that poi-factory wouldn't endorse a malicious site, however it's always best to be cautious and ask if anyone else has gotten the warning first, it's not popping up and complaining in this day and age when nearly any site can be hacked, even so called super secure sites. Better safe than sorry.

Virus

My files have been scanned at TotalVirus.com. It scans the file against 40-50 anti-virus (or more. Don't remember). You can be sure the files are safe!

Why is your AV freaking out then? My site has programs that also write to registry (EPE) or hack the mouse or the sound (TTS and non-TTS VoiceEditor) on your computer. AV can't make the difference between malicious and non-malicious programs. In doubts, they issue a warning. This is what's happening to you.

Now, the choice is yours!

Thumbs up for POI-Factory!

Hi John! I was asked how the Where-To icon thing was working. Could not remember. So I found and read this thread:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31703

LOL! EPE is great! It does things I don't event remember. lol! By reading back on everything, I discovered I was also making icons for categories within the GPI file. Wow! haha!

Funny. When you have to reverse engineer the code or read back on what was posted years ago to find out what it does. I realize my documentation has never been updated since v4.85. Ouch!

Anyway! Was just passing by. Always a please to chat with you guys. Cheers!

Last-used Open and Save Directories would be helpful

Perhaps there isn't any new development work going on?

I really appreciate the editor AS-IS but it sure would be
helpful if the File -> Open and Save functions remembered
and initialized to their last-used directories.
As it is, I always have to start from the top of file system every time. And, yes, I need them to be able to be different directories.

Any chance of an enhancement like that?

Thanks.

Don't Understand Circles

I've never understood how circles are used and how to create them in EPE.

An explanation would be appreciated.

I love using a freeware and portable piece of software called Quick Access Popup. Quick Access Popup lets you move between your frequently used folders, documents, applications, webpages, etc.

http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=quick+access&m=

Be sure that "change folders in dialog box with main QAP mouse and keyboard hotkeys" is checked in the "Options" under "Settings" and then add your favorite folders to the list.

So in EPE, when I am asked for a folder, I click the mouse button and select the Folder "Garmin" where my POI files are stored.

This is not what you would like, I realize, but it sure makes it easy for me.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out.

Circles

That's a complex subject. I know you had people here that were experts at this. I'm not. I just make the program. lol! Silly but true. Here's what I know:

Let's call the Proximity Distance the usual proximity circle that you have been using forever. When you get within this distance, your GPS will tell you you have arrived. Assuming a North/South road, if you arrive from North or from South, if you get within the Proximity, you are arrived.

Proximity circles can be used to for a specific direction to get the alert. For example, a Rest Area that is only available when going from South to North.

1- Put a big proximity distance. As usual. Let's say 300 meters or 1/4 of a mile.

2- Put a small proximity circle within the Proximity (see above) a bit South from from the center of the POI.

If the GPS detects the proximity circle before it reaches the POI center, then it will raise an alarm. If it reaches the POI before the proximity circle, it won't.

Note: You can put multiple small proximity circles if there are more than one way to reach your POI.

That's about what I know.

Thanks again Turbo

After reading the link you suggested, I have a better feel for those little green circles and happy to have confirmation that if I accidentally click here or there and create them, nothing else comes of it if I don't complete the process.

Win 10.1 woes

Installed the latest EPE versions (5.98 and 5.99) on my Win 10.1 laptop and am getting an error when I try to change the M-column CSV Fields (Options menu). I get a "Runtime Error 383; 'Text' property is read only" error pop-up and then EPE just closes. sad

I've tried running it in WinXP mode as Administrator, got same error.

Anyone experienced this and have a suggestion?

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Fixed!

Doh!
I checked Turbo's site and found this in the comments:

Quote:

I am getting a Run Time '383' Text Property Read Only error when I access preferences amd the M menu.
The editor then crashes. I have used the full install file with Windows 7.
Is there a cure for this.

and this reply from Turbo:

Quote:

yes, open a DOS box (type cmd in the run box - Start Menu, then cmd), then go in the EPE folder and type:

Extra_POI_Editor -reset

This will clear the EPE configuration in the Registry and fix the problem. Once you do this, you'll have to reconfigure the EPE Preferences, but that is it.

Fixed.

Just use the run line.

GPSgeek wrote:

Open a command line by simply right-clicking on the Start Button and selecting RUN. Type or copy & Paste the command and hit Enter. You don't have to start a CMD window.

With Win10, I didn't have to fully qualify the Extra_POI_Editor.exe disc location. You may have to with WIN7, e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Extra_POI_Editor\Extra_POI_Editor.exe -reset"

I'm sticking with Win 7 on both my PCs. I managed to get all the Windows 10 preparation updates uninstalled so I'm not nagged about it anymore.

I could probably update my desktop, but the laptop has too many unique Lenovo programs that don't have Windows 10 updates. Things like the track pad, power manager and special keyboard keys.

Besides, I like Win 7.

Creating a GPX from a CSV...

I posted this in another post but thought it would be better here!

Some EPE File Saving Methods...

When one saves a file as a CSV, The fields may not be set proper unless you use Garman CSV save. (With EPE, Garman CSV fields are set with the default for the CSV format of 4 Cols).

I use EPE a lot for my Offbeat and I also Export this information in many different formats for other uses. To Create a CSV file to fit your needs you will need to do the following:

Click on Options, Then click on M-Colum CSV Fields. Look at the pull down for each field, go near the bottom of that pull down and you will see options that combine some fields together. (Notice the Separation for each)

These setting will let you export/import CSV files so that they will fall into the proper Fields in EPE. This way, if you want to save it later as a GPX file, It can be saved properly.

This is also good for Creating or Reading CSV properly and placing the information in each correct field.

Lets do a Example,

Lets say you have a CSV file that has 4 Col, they are:

"Longitude","Latitude","POIName","Address,City,State,Zip,Phone"
(note the (,) Comma in the 4th col - they must be there to work properly. You can also use Tabs for this)

You would set the setting as the following:
Col 1 = Longitude
Col 2 = Latitude
Col 3 = POI Name
Col 4 = Address, City, State, PostCode, Phone

This will read the information in the CSV file and then place them in the proper areas in EPE. This would read the 4 col CSV and put the information in the proper places so that you can then save it as a GPX.

You can also use this method to create a Excel file (CSV) and create any of the col as you with.

SO...

If you download a CSV file here, make sure there are commas in the 4th Col between each field you want to break, then check EPE setting, and load the file in, the fields should go to the correct places in EPE!

Showing someone this is easer than trying to type the information.. I will try to explain it more if any one needs it.. maybe even do a Video capture?

Ken, Not quite what you want but have you discovered in Options/Preferences, the entry "File Open Startup Path" in right column?

It at least gets you in the ball-park when doing a Save.

EPE cannot find the path to Google Earth

Hi Turbo,
This is probably "user error", but I have started getting the subject error message in EPE when I select Tools/Open in GoogleEarth.

It has been happening since updating GE to Ver. 7 from Ver. 6. (GE no longer has a "check for updates", hence the time lag).

This has happened on 2 PCs, but works just fine on a 3rd.
Within EPE the satellite and map images appear just fine.

All 3 PCs are at:
Windows 7, all updates
EPE 5.99
GE 7.1.5.1557

I have tried starting EPE with the -reset option.
I have tried uninstalling EPE and GE, reinstalling GE 1st, then EPE.(with a Reg clean in between).
I have tried with GE opened before EPE.

I have compared the GE program path and it is identical on all 3.

I've searched turboccc wikispace, and various POI sites - I appear to be only one, so problem most likely between chair and keyboard.

You are not alone

I emailed Turbo back beginning of September, and also entered on his Wiki pages, and no response.

I think that Turbo may have taken a break from EPE hassles, for whatever reason. Hopefully there will be a fix though.

Perhaps someone else will find the "loose connection", I for one still cannot figure out why it works perfectly on one system, and fails on another two, especially when all release levels etc. are exactly the same.

More Details

@oldboy, you did indeed state the OSs for the systems; I just didn't back up and look once I started typing.

Wonder what might be letting one of the three systems work?

I found the problem because I was trying to geocode some new locations of the files I maintain in EPE.

I just tried "Tools > Open in Google Earth(TM)" and that worked. I am at version 7.1.7.2606 of Google Earth. I use multiple browsers although - now that I think about it - I don't know how that would impact EPE.

When I ask for Geocode, I get:

a "File Download" dialog asking
"Do you want to open or save this file?
Name: xml.xml
Type: Application
From: maps.googleapis.com

etc.......

and another dialog box saying:

Getting File Information
xml.xml from googlemapis..com

Estimated time left
etc..........

Followed by and EPE dialog saying:
The requested search did not return any relevant results.

My feeling is that Turbo needs to make a different "api" call to fix this problem with geocoding. However, I don't understand why the EPE "Tools > Open in Google Earth(TM)" does work for me but not for you.

if

the problem is when you try to get to google earth, the problem might be with google earth, had a new version installed on one of my pc's last week

EPE ver 5.99 not working

Suddenly my version of the Extra_POI-Loader stopped working.
It appears as an icon on the toolbar but does not open on the desktop.

I uninstalled my version files, downloaded another setup file and then reinstalled the program.

After restarting my computer the problem still persists. I had upgraded to Windows 10 about a year ago so I can not seeing Win 10 as the problem.

I am open to comments.

Do an EPE "reset"

Hi Macleadv

Can't promise this is the fix, but I have had similar problem a couple of times over the years.

You may need to run a one-time Reset of EPE, in order to eliminate registry entries. I think turboccc has a description on his wiki, but try this:

1. create a duplicate of, or a new shortcut for EPE on your desktop;
2. right-click shortcut, click Properties;
3. Change Target to:

"C:Program Files (x86)TurboCCCExtra_POI_EditorExtra_POI_Editor.exe" -reset

(Note the final parameter "-reset")

4. run once, and then try the normal shortcut. Has always worked for me, but YMMV.

Quick and Dirty

macleadv wrote:

...I am open to comments.

This has been discussed before. Try holding the shift key down while starting EPE. Works sometimes.

Guys, I tried both solutions, but neither were successful. I restored my computer to a previous restore point and EPE is working properly again. A little time consuming but successful.

I'm getting the same message. The only thing that changed, to my knowledge, is that Google Earth Pro was automatically downloaded to my computer. I didn't ask for it, I don't particularly want it, but I got it. Is there maybe some connection between EPE and Google Earth Pro that wasn't there with just plain old Google Earth?

I am getting same message, last couple of days. It is happening on a PC that did NOT have GE Pro installed.

When I click on "Learn More" IE11 opens, but Firefox is my default browser (and already open).

Why should EPE care what browser is open?
